Dylana at 3rd Power Amps to build Satriani his next amp for the tour

Because it’s not about having the best build what is needed. It’s about “equity”.

I can’t wait for the new “equity” pilots, doctors, nurses and lawyers to start popping up.

Now before someone thinks I’m badmouthing 3rd power amps, I am not… those amps have their own niche. A niche I wouldn’t not call the VH brown sound.
ding ding ding... I was waiting for someone to say it. DEI virtue signaling at its finest.. that's why it's seems so odd lol

Looks like a dude.

Here is additional information from GuitarWorld that echoes much of the same.

“I wanna hear that mythical sound”: Joe Satriani has been struggling to nail Eddie Van Halen’s tone – so he’s having a special amp built for the Best of All Worlds tour. "

Satch has called upon 3rd Power Amplification to replicate the tones of Van Halen's modded Marshalls from 1986, which will form the foundation of his EVH-inspired sound

Joe Satriani has been particularly open about the challenges he’s currently facing as he attempts to harness Eddie Van Halen’s electric guitar sound and style in the lead-up to the upcoming Best of All Worlds tour.

The tour will see him perform a wealth of Van Halen material alongside Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham, and Satch knows all too well the significance of his role as the supergroup’s lead guitar player – a role that will see him tackle many of Eddie Van Halen’s most iconic guitar parts.

Satch has already spoken of the stylistic difficulties associated with covering Van Halen – he told Guitar World the biggest challenge was pinning the player down – but now he’s discussed in more depth the challenges that come with attempting to dial in EVH’s heralded guitar tone.

And, according to Satch, the struggle to perfect the “mythical” Eddie Van Halen sound has become so great, he’s sought out help to build a special guitar amp specifically for the tour.

In a previous interview with Guitar World, Satch spoke of the challenge in finding a rig that could cover all Van Halen bases, but later said he’d honed in on a particular tonal era of EVH to do so.

Specifically, he landed on Van Halen’s 1986 Live Without a Net rig, which comprised modded Marshalls that included power soaks and effects processing. That Marshall tone is still the end goal, but now it turns out he’s sounded out Dylana Scott of 3rd Power Amplifiers to bring it back to life for the tour.

“Eddie had specific gear. He didn't play with the gear I used or Steve Vai or Slash or Tom Morello or any of his contemporaries,” Satch said in a new interview with Australian Musician. “He actually had a very specific setup.

“I started to think, 'Well, what's my favorite Van Halen section?’” he went on. “And I did find that period in '86. I talked to Sam [Hagar] quite a bit about it and he said… he was still using Marshalls – in Sammy's view, his favorite sound that Eddie ever made.

“It wasn't small and then stereo-ized. So I reached out to Dylana Scott at 3rd Power Amplifiers, and she is building me what we believe is going to be the amp that does it.”

“I know, in my heart, that I wanna hear that sound in my head, that mythical Eddie Van Halen sound that we all sort of hear in our mind, and I wanna be able to feel it. And so I've been getting these clips from Dylana every week, and the stuff that she's building is really amazing.”

To that end, Satch is all too aware that his own rig wouldn’t work for Van Halen material, owing to the fact it’s set up to serve a completely different purpose.

“I started to think, 'Well, what's my favorite Van Halen section?’” he went on. “And I did find that period in '86. I talked to Sam [Hagar] quite a bit about it and he said… he was still using Marshalls – in Sammy's view, his favorite sound that Eddie ever made.

This is the one that didn't make a lot of sense to me. He has to talk to Sammy to find out EVH was using Marshalls in '86 - "his favorite sound that Eddie ever made." And if he has been struggling to nail EVH's tone then why is he doing the tour? I get Al Estrada is not as well know and didn't play with Chickenfoot. He has done a number of live shows with DLR, but I doubt there is any exclusivity there. Satch DID say that he needs to cover Montrose - Red Rocker - VH and Chickenfoot, but again I'm not sure why he can't get all of those tones with his JVMs. He IS still listed on the Marshall website as a sponsored artist BTW. I don't care so much about the 3rd Power part, it is more just the entirety of it all :dunno:

PS: This is Rig-Talk where we Talk about Rigs within our community that has similar interests. We really don't care if that offends you
And here's the part that's headscratching to me besides the other interview out there about small sounding amps - “Eddie had specific gear. He didn't play with the gear I used or Steve Vai or Slash or Tom Morello or any of his contemporaries,” Satch said in a new interview with Australian Musician. “He actually had a very specific setup.

Well yeah, every guitarists has specific gear, duh. Ed was just doing his thing. Oh well, I like Joe and he obviously can do whatever he wants and tone chase with whoever. Agree with you the entirety of it all is just a weird slant. Surprised he doesn't lean on Steve more for this since he's already been there done that.

But yeah, whatever, all good.

Vai? yeah.

It was also weird to say he spoke to Sammy and Sammy confirmed LWAN timeframe (86) was Marshalls. Maybe he meant vs SLO? I guess he doesn't nerd out on that kind of thing like we do

I played a 3rd Power Kitchen Sink at a GC a few yrs back. Killer modded Marshall tone; reminded me of a Cam Jose I had long ago. Really 3D sounding with great clarity.

I guess if I'm after a VH tone, it's a slightly modded Superlead. Or similar. Any 5150 type would be way down the line when it comes to choosing an amp to do early EVH. And yes, ANY 5150 iteration sounds small when compared to a legit NMV 100w Marshall. Of course, those Marshalls make most amps not named Wizard or HiWatt sound small.

This forum absolutely deserves the reputation it’s earned over the years.

Congratulations to you all.
I've got a trans niece so i understand both sides of the coin (so to speak). I personally think Dylan looks happy so who am I or any of us to make fun of that or judge her. I still have many questions about transgenderism but it's not my place to tell anyone how to live their life. That said, this is Rig Talk. This is how the forum rolls and nobody is safe from anything. It's exhausting to have to go through life protecting everyone's feelings. Plenty of forums for that, this is a bit like the wild west and you have to roll with it. It's what makes it fun and dare i say .." diverse".

Thanks for keeping us on course

There are plenty of threads in Off Topic Central for non gear complaining.

The real question is...how affordable will this amp be? If 3rd Power really cares about tone and loves what they do, how willing are they to reflect this in the price point ? Are they going to charge 4k for their amp like the big dogs ?
