I got one a few weeks ago. It is probably my favorite amp right now. It sounds more refined in comparison to my 5150. It is less snarly but it cuts like a hot knife through butter in the mix. Killer amp and totally under the radar for metal these days.
+1

You've been gasing an EVH now for months! How the hell did a TSL get in front of the 5150III?!

You would have to pry the EVH from my dead, cold, rigor mortis strickened hands................... (unless I get a Herbert :D )
Your in luck, the Crate is a combo too!

having played one back to back with my 5150 II, i hated them when they first came out. i could not jive with the tone at all.

however - the more i have played them, the more they have grown on me

the clean channel is better than the 5150 series, but i still like the crunch channel of the 5150 series better over the III. the lead channel is a solo'ers amplifier in my opinion - it responds better to licks and runs and does not feel like you are fighting a raging bull compared to a SLO or 5150/5150 II.

FWIW i dont get as tired playing it. but they have had some serious reliability issues. one of the very first ones unboxed at our sam ash store in charlotte was deffective with the channel switching and the lead channel having signal problems. they had to unbox another one before we could even demo it.

they say they have fixed all of the bugs. i think i would still want one for at home use, but i wouldnt feel trustworthy taking it out on a gig - ill leave that to my 5150 II.

2 combo amps is enough for me. :D

This is one of the few amps that I pretty much fell in love with as soon as I plugged into it. The lead channel is damn near everything I look for in gain. The clean channel breaks up pretty early, especially with high output pups, but thats ok since everything has its own volume. I wish the rhythm channel had a bit more gain, but Im sure I could get it where I want it with a boost. Very easy to dial in. HUGE range of sounds, and they all sound great. Its got the simplicity of the original as far as dialing and controls (in the sense that it doesnt take a genius or games to dial it in, like a recto or the cobra), and its not hard to get something you like out of it. Formation of Damnation tone is what really got me interested in them, and everytime I try one out, I wish I had the cash for it lol.

(I still like my 6505 212 combo better, but I havent A/B'd them through the same cab, so who knows)

I have a 5150 block combo and have played the EVH 5150 3 a few times.

IMHO the EVH smokes the 5150 in all ways. Of course I go my combo used for $750 about 5 years ago. But to my ears it was one of the best sounding supermass produced amps I've ever heard.

I don't care where an amp is made; reliability issues seem to variable. Pete Thorn used one for a whole year on tour. However, he also probably has an amp tech that would check over the amp and changes tubes or fuses before it could incite a problem.

I got one of these when they first came out...people seemed not to like them. Now they appear to get more favorable reviews. My take on the amp was that 1) the clean would easily become gritty, cool if that's your thing 2) The blue channel had a cool sound and vibe to it, but just not quite enough gain/drive... I can see boosting this 3) The red channel sounded s bit strange to me, really, really different than the Peavey amps in terms of high gain, but yet more like I "think" EVH would have his sig amp sound like.

If I recall, its quite a bit bigger than most amps. I sold it not long after I got it. It really had nothing bad going on, it just didn't do anything that really made me want to keep it.

Perfect explanation of that amp. I actually went through two brand new ones that died on me in the middle of jams both times. Third one was pretty good though. As you said not a bad amp at all, just wasn't my thing in the end. ps - I had mine in different outlets when they died!
Just curious, did you ever find out why the first two died? I'm wondering if it was the common preamp tube issue. Also, do you frequent the Jackson forums? ;)

Never been on the Jackson forums so there must be another. Mine, from what I understand, were all the second tube layout. They actually still had the factory sticker inside with Eddie's original desired tube layout but all three of mine were different so it wasn't the tube thing. Same thing happened to both, just went from band volume to totally quiet and couldn't get it to work. The dealer was super cool and kept ordering new ones, but they never told me what the issue was. The last one I had was great, no issues but I still was always nervous. I know guys that never had a problem though. Fender sent me a bunch of t shirts and a head cover for my trouble so they knew something was up with them.
By second tube layout do you mean JJ's instead of the Sovtek/EH combination, or did each V slot do something different (for example: V7 in the first layout was for phase invertion but in the second layout was for Effects loop)?

yes JJs.

Saw testament opening for Slayer last month and Eric Peterson was using a EVH III along with what looked like a Diezel. Sounded Killer.

However, the power and standby switches on the back of the amp takes a little while to get used to .

i believe they recorded a new album, and on that album the entire guitar parts that Eric plays are nothing but 5150 III with a TC nova delay giving a few micro seconds of give in the effects loop before going out to the cabinets.

the diezel info you mention is new though - he must of have just added that. ill look on youtube and see if i can find the interview im talking about

i like the lead channel the best on the 5150 III. its very player friendly and very effortless to play - much different than all of my normal experiences with 5150's.

id own one for at home use to noodle on for sure

my 5150 III is on its way! so pumped.

I forgot to mention that the lead channel of the 5150 III is pretty dry sounding, you may be better off using the crunch channel boosted with a distortion pedal. You may want to buy a Keeley Modded Metalzone while you are at it.

Otherwise, congrats on the purchase

I tried different tubes in mine but I went back to the JJ's that came in it (I don't know what is stock in the amp though). I thought it sounded better without a boost also and I darn near boost everything...   Mine has great saturation. Maybe it is the KT66's though...
