FAVORITE EGNATER MODULES........

I've noticed a few people here say they like the SL2 module (B channel) the best for high gain. I've been looking for clips of the B channel and I haven't really heard anything that really cranks. I'm looking for Ratt "Lay it Down" into type high gain. Some of the sounds I've heard from SL2 sound a little too much like AC/DC which is what I DON'T want (and is NOT high gain...).

Are there any other good high gain clips of SL2 B channel floating around?

SL2 = JCM800, so it would be more of a 80s "classic rock" sound.

I think EG5 or MHG would be a better match for 80s "hair metal"

Then can the EG5 A channel do JCM-800 gain?

I'd love a brutal gain channel and something a little milder. I guess I'd be a little concerned getting EG5 if it doesn't sound great with a little less gain on the A channel.

I have only heard the EG5 in the clips some of the guys here have posted, but from what I have heard, gain-wise, you should be able to get EG5 close to SL2, but I don't think EQ-wise they sound the same. EG5 has more of the Soldano-ish/Bogner-ish edge, and not so much Marshall-ish. To me, that's why I think (in general) it would be a better match for some of the mid-80s hair metal - a lot of those guys were playing SLOs (although, to be fair, a lot were playing hot rod JCM800s also.) Honestly, you can probably get close to any of the 80s type sounds with either the SL2 or the EG5 - a guy posted a cover of Ozzy's "I Don't Know" a while back using the EG5....it was pretty close to RR's tone, which was either a late 70s hot rod 100W Marshall or a JCM800 - don't know which.

I'm sure one of the other guys who actually has the module will post their opin soon.

You can back the volume off channel A of EG5 and get similar amounts of gain to SL2. But EG5 will always have more bite, SL2 is more woody and squishy.

To me the SL2 Channel A is the "AC/DC" tone. While the Channel B is straight HEAVY HAIR METAL. Not the Super brutal Metal( EG5) but it does all the rest easily. I like hearing clips but they are just a fraction of what the thing really sounds like. It could be a different setting dialed in that would make it sound different then what you would dial. I dont use alot of mids so its going to sound alot different then someone who cranks the mids and so on. I usually just jumped in the deep end head first, Bought the module and tried it on my rig at my pace, my settings. If it didnt pan out to what I thought it might be, I could just re-sell it. Good thing about the Modules, TOP NOTCH and they have EXCELLENT RE-SALE value. Like a Investment that you can CRANK till your ears bleed!! Cant do that with a Savings bond!!

SL2 is my FAV!

Channel A (JCM 800) - I use for AC/DC, Rush, Van Halen, Led Zep, STP type tones.
Channel B (Hot Rodded Marshall) - I use for any 80s metal, Tool, APC, Alice in Chains type tones.

Wish I could find another module I liked as much and still cut.

Maybe the EG3/4 will be my answer unless I get another MHG.

Where's the SL love?

Probably my favorite mod of all four (DLX, VOX, SL, COD) in my M4. Makes me want to play AC/DC all day long. Articulate, crunchy, punchy, so good. Throw a boost or an OD in front and I've got all the gain I'll need.

I simply can't get that module to sound bad.

I can't really answer this one very definitively because I got into these amps for all the different tones they help me get for my music. Well, I have the TD, SL2 in head A and VX and SL in head B right now for my live rig with a bunch of others in an M4 for the studio. I have found these four to get me all my recorded tones live pretty well with a little boost or comp here and there. I love the Bman and COD for what they do uniquely. When recording metal rhythm guitar, the EG5 is my go-to now. i still find there is some special mid-gain magic in the ie4 ch3 that I can't get with any of the modular series, so that thing is never going anywhere. ;)

The DLX, EG5, and SL2 Channel B are my all-time favorites. They are they two I could not do without!! Second comes the COD and VX. Gotta love em all :).

Anyone gigging with the EG5? How about the MHG? I'd be curious to see who has great luck gigging with the MHG? I'd also be curious to see if the EG5 is sounding good at gigs.

Also, I am thinking of stepping into some Pete Turley modded Randall modules. Anyone have some and use as much as their Egnaters?

Just posted in the EG5 thread......it sounded tremendous on the Saturday gig. Great for the hard rock crunch. Loved it. Haven't gigged the EG3/4 so I can't help there. I've been swapping back and forth between the SL2 and EG5 and love both for what they bring to the table.

The EG5 excelled with Ice Cream Man, Crazy Train, Machine Head, Crazy Bitch as well as some other third set hard rockers. Just killer tone and crushing gain.

After playing with it some more, it can do classic ock as well. With the right EQ settings I could get convincing AC/DC to Rush and Led Zep all the way up to modern Alice in Chains.
