Favorite old school thrash metal tones

Oh man, this one is easy for me. Top 2 of mine are:

Carcass: Symphonies of Sickness - because it sounds less like a 'guitar tone' and fits the overall aesthetics of the album
Entombed: Clandestine - because it is really unique and again fits the overall album tone

I really appreciate how hard bands had to innovate back then to craft their sound due to lack of specialty equipment and knowledge forums to learn from.

Overkill had great tones and riffs. Vocals suck and what held them back. But those tones…holy shit

Everyone behold the finest live example of thrash...how do I know, I was there and it was even better live. Everyone owes Exodus. If it wasn't for them none of the bands mentioned would never happened. Metallica, Slayer and many others were admittedly bested by them and here's why....

I’ll sadly admit I’ve never listened to these guys. Listening now and shit, these guys are tight as fuck. Great tones for sure. Makes me sad I sold my DCP-1. Langner for the win!

I've always like the thrash tones from Overkill's Horrorscope. Not sure if 1991 counts as old school thrash though.

XXX with a Presonus eq3b.

That setup came way later. Live album is Holt’s #1 Langner modded JCM800. His best tone by far
When I saw that tour he was using the XXX. I spoke to him about it at that show.

You're mistaken. That recording is from 1997. It wasn't even a tour, just a few one off shows w/Baloff.
I stand corrected on the recording. They did however tour with Baloff for that record. I hung out with them at the Alrosa in Columbus.

Overkill years of decay and Horrorscope. I saw them on both yours as a kid. My 1st show was years of decay with Bobby g.

Saw Nuclear Assault, Testament and savatage during the Practice What you Preach tour. All of them sounded great during those years.

Anthrax always sounded good in those days. Megadeth sounded best during So Far So Good So What and Rust in Peace.

Sepulturs from Beneath The Remains and onward.

I wasn't a huge Metallica fan except for the first two albums (never really listened to MOP in its entirety until later). I've grown to appreciate AJFA

I don't consider Obituary thrash but I love their tone, Carcass, and Bolt Thrower if we are talking about Death Metal

I know it's the obvious answer, but Master Of Puppets definitely has my favourite thrash tone, I don't think it has ever been topped. "Damage Inc" just tears my face off every time I hear it. Thrash Perfection.

I love Rust In Peace too, but I think the rhythm tone is kinda shit. The lead tone on the other hand is pretty good. I think Marty said he just plugged into a cranked up Marshall jcm 800 with a tube screamer for that tone... the delay and reverb was added from the board or whatever?? Dave said he just used Marshall shit to get the RIP tone but I call bullshit on that. It sounds nothing like a jcm 800, that's for sure. To me it sounds like a rack pre-amp recorded direct, or something solid state?? Maybe even a Rockman like he used on Peace Sells, which to my ears has a better rhythm tone for the most part. The good thing about the RIP rhythm tone is it has great clarity and definition (just listen to Take No Prisoners), so I think if he used a fatter tone it might have sounded a bit blurred and worse. So in the end it worked for the material being played.
