Is there a number to call for for 4 string bassists who want a 5 string again even after multiple attempts where it just didn’t work out? I’m thinking about doing it again… anybody wanna be my sponsor ? I’m desperate… Desperate I tell ya. I can’t take it… I’m in a real fix here… I need help…

My #1 tip for peeps starting out with 5-string basses is to pretend the low B just isn't there.

Its use can creep in slowly over time.

A lot of my favorite bands, including 311, use 5 string basses. Seems it would be hard to slap bass while ignoring the low B :dunno:

They need to make a B-Tuna for basses.

Yup.

The biggest challenge for me when moving over to 5 strings was slapping cleanly.

Dayum. 6 would be even-tougher to slap on I reckon.

Kudos to you bro'.
I didn't do a lot of slapping on them homey. A little thump and pluck here and there. Maybe an occasional really REALLY bad interpretation of Jerry was a racecar driver.

I'm not a great slapper anyway. I'm more of an Eric Wilson, JPJ, Robert DeLeo, Mike Starr, Tim Commerford, Geezer Butler influenced player.

I’m ~35 years a bassist (main gig) but ≈ on guitar, and it’s 100% psychological with a dash of automuscle memory thrown in. same reason I don’t do extended range guitars either. Trying to fix what ain’t broke… I have Hipshot drop tuners on all my basses and on some guitars, and that gets me there quick, and I’m fairly efficient at the flipping lever. I love those things and they can go down at least an octave, maybe more.

Got my first bass in 1977. I was 9.

I transpose on 4 strings. I usually I drop to D and transpose the other way when I need to. The 6 strings were cool because I could have the low E and the low D.

Of course these days I'm going on a decade since I broke up my band so it's usually me in a spare bedroom with my Spector and late 80s SVT II np. Sometimes an envelope filter or the Team Awesome Fuzz Machine. But usually I'm just dicking around working on cleanly playing Rush or STP songs. To what end, fuck knows.

Which RUSH?

Which RUSH?

Lots of Rush. But nothing after Moving Pictures. I am a massive Rush fan boi. Geddy and Chris Squire are my top 2 influences and the reason why I have been playing a 4001 since I was 15 years old. So I try my hand at a lot of Rush songs, but if you're asking me which ones I play well, probably very few.

The first Rush song I ever learned was No One At the Bridge off Caress of Steel.

Bastille Day and Lakeside Park still send chills down my spine.

Great songs. I stopped listening to anything new past Testicles for Echo… I prefer the earlier stuff too. But they had 5 releases when I was in high school 87-91.
Hold Your Fire and Show of hands got worn out in my car.

Well I'm probably a little older than you. Growing up I was way into Sabbath, Zeppelin, Rush, Yes. So when they cut their hair and started getting into their "New" phase I sort of lost interest. Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, 2112. That's the shit for me. Lots of killer shit on MP, but I still prefer the older, rawer stuff. Geddy Lee is a serious bad ass and even the newer stuff I don't particularly care for is amazing shit man. His basslines are like songs within a song. That's the shit I like.
