For under a grand Ibanez can't be touched

New? I'd have to agree with that. Used, the pool gets a lot bigger. EBMM isn't really a valid comparison. They're a different style of guitar than Ibanez.

On new guitars, I agree. IMO, Ibanez makes the best bolt-on neckjoints (AANJ) and best FR style trems.

Ibanez are nice, but I prefer ESP or LTD. Not a big fan of Schecter at all, but there are TONS of GREAT guitars for under a grand if you dont mind buying used

Some EBMMs are different yes, not all.

I've onlyo played a few Ibanez guitars in my life (strange, I know) and I have yet to hear one that sounds good to me. I just don't dig their tone. With me, it's tone first and playability second.

I'd take a used Les Paul Studio.

I don't like basswood sound either. I like either alder or hog

funny. i had a les paul and i didn't like it...not the tone really cuz i can come close to the same tone with any fiddle (knobs on the amp were put there for a reason) but i didn't dig the way it played. with me, playability first, tone second. i gotta be comfy when i play.

Hmmmm............
I have looked at a few recently and their quality seems to be improved.
In 1998 I ordered a new JEM. When it came in, I was underwhelmed by the quality of the paint and the inlays. You could also easily see the joint lines in the body.
Just after this, I "accidentally" ended up owning a new Wolfgang USA Special. The Wolfgang's tone just totally blew away the JEM, at almost exactly half the price.
I sold the JEM and bought a Wolfgang USA Standard on ebay, starting my Wolfgang addiction.
It took awhile to get used to the neck after owning nothing but Ibanez Wizard variations for years, but the tone was it.

Under a Grand......
Schecter Hellraiser
Schecter C-1 Exotic
LTD Deluxe Series
Jackson DK reverse arch-topw/emg (i forget the exact model i had)

all mahogany bodies (jackson was alder)

For me - it's a no brainer because I love the feel of my RG1527s. I've never played another 7 string that feels or plays this good. If they were $1500 they'd still be worth it to me. The workmanship of the Prestige models are excellent. Are they made as well as EBMM - maybe not. But to me this guitar is perfect. It's just a bonus that it's as inexpensive as it is and that I like the look of it.

Totally disagree.

Then what would you have for under a grand?

Used ESP or ESP/LTD, used Gibson, Burny, Orville, Edwards, Schecter, Epiphone, etc. Ibanez guitars have pretty much every feature I hate in a guitar. Basswood body, rosewood fretboard, shitty pickups, paper thin necks, etc.

They make an Ibanez with mahogany body, still got rosewood and paperthin neck for under a grand, RGA121, but hey man different strokes for different folks. I LOVE Ibanez Wizard II necks, can't stand thick ones

I'd disagree, and say Carvin. I was always weary about them due to the whole mail order business, but after the success of my C66T in dragonburst, I can honestly say that I think all my next guitars will be Carvins (with the exception of hollowbodies, as I desperately need one and they don't offer one). Made in the USA, to boot :P

You can easily get a new Carvin for under a grand.

I would have agreed a few years ago, but now I disagree, except for their hollowbodies. My Edwards LP Custom blows away any under a grand Ibanez solid bodies I've owned in the past (RG1527, 570, 560).

Ibanez are great guitars for under a grand. LTD's are great as well. Shecter really makes good guitars though I'm not a fan. I always take a second look on Schecters at my local GC store.

...and if one wants PERFECT finishing, fretwork etc then one can buy a J-Custom.

Some funny ass comments on this thread

For me yup, pure shred axe Ibanez for me.

Ibanez and Schecter are good for under a grand....Ibanez needs to work on putting better pickups in their guitars and Both Ibanez and Schecter need to offer more color options.

If you live in Norway, an EB Petrucci is 2760$ from the webshop with the best prices by far. The RRP is 3691$
You`ll find maybe one a year used if you`re lucky.
A Caparison is about the same.
A normal Std Strat is 1800$ if you get a deal on it.
A white JEM is 4614$ retail.

These are conversion to USD from the NOK retail price....

So an Ibanez can`t be touched cos there are no alternatives :D

I don't think that basswood is nearly the most common wood they're made from. Not sure where that came from. They have like 10,000 models under $1,000.

As for the "shitty pickups," I don't think any other company you mentioned, aside from Gibson, is exactly a shining example of "good" pickups coming standard. The closest anyone really gets is LTDs mostly having EMGs, but they're EMGs, so that doesn't mean crap to me.

Regardless, I've never encountered a single guitar that came pre-equipped with the "perfect" pickups, so I don't even consider that. If it had some weird $500 thing in there, I'd probably still try changing it.

I guess the rest is just personal preference, but I really don't get where you're coming from with all of the other stuff.
