A poster uses one IP for each account he's running. Another for each ALT account, and so on, and so on.

The fact that a particular user always posts behind the same IP address means absolutely nothing as far as vetting that user is not running other accounts.

I thought I said "posting as Donnie"? That's what I meant to say anyway; that address has been consistent. Obviously he hasn't got a VPN set to rotate addresses if he does have one. It was premature of me to say he doesn't seem to have one.

As for alts, the only people who seem to care are those who're exposed to alts of members they don't like. I know for a fact that they're exposed to alts of members they do like too but are unaware of it.

Yeah, he's been permanently-banned many times. He keeps rejoining, although this time a long while later, and we afford him a chance. The ban-fuse gets shorter every time 'though.

"Suspected" isn't good-enough for a ban sis'.

More-importantly, we've never bant peeps' alts. Many, many upstanding members have alts - literally hundreds at least. Alts aren't a problem for us; the wrong behaviour is when it crosses the line.

Lastly, as I've said before, there's no tool to scan the membership and flag alts. Each of 23 000+ accounts would have to be examined, and even then, if each alt is assigned a different IP via VPN the job of correlating one account with another would be impossible... for us at least.

I repeat this every year or so it seems. People whine about alts. Some of the whiners even have alts. We don't care about alts. Members shouldn't either IMHO - it's a friggin' waste of time; life's too-short.

In all seriousness, and not meant as a direct reply to your post, in the last approx. 20 years I've been
a member, an owner, a moderator, a suspended member, banned member, paroled member
(both overt and covert), lurker, etc. of literally dozens of message boards at one time or another,
and I've never seen the obsession over the loosely associated ALT thing like with a few here.

Nobody can even fully agree on what an ALT even is, or whether it's a bad thing - yet paragraphs
have been written about the abbreviation.

Strikes my very tired (and even more so sore) funny bone as giggle worthy.

(this morning was visit 5 of at least 7 or 8 to the dentist just this past month for some LONG overdue work.

Sorry Monkey Man, I had only meant that it's up to y'all to determine what needs to be done when/on your terms. I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, and was only trying to imply that you're fair and would take care of a problem if you thought it was a problem or was breaking rules. Sorry if I overstepped, I honestly wasn't trying to. It was an attempt at defending the mods who are the best. Forgive me 😿

I used that "suspected" reference to make a point, that being that unless one can be 100% certain one might be banning the wrong person and further to that, we don't care anyway.

I did this 'cause there's always a bit of rumbling / grumbling going on about the matter. If a mod suddenly enters into a state of caring about this, I wish him or her luck with what will be an epic, never-ending battle pushing shit uphill... and for pretty-much nothing.
