Hey RT,

I recently bought a Furman AC215 for noise testing at my place. I will let you know how the results/testing goes!

what sort of noise are you experiencing?
I honestly am just having some low level hiss/hum in the background. It does not sound too bad overall but would be nice to be sure it is reduced as much as possible. I also noticed some variance in the way my amp sounded but actually had one of my preamp tubes that seemed to be going. I had already ordered this, so we'll see how it goes. I am recording speaker demos, and want to make sure the environment is as stable/sterile as possible, and as quiet as possible. Depending on how the AC215 may change the incoming power, it could theoretically change the plate voltage on the amp, and the bias slightly, and therefore the tone overall. I know it is a it extreme but I am trying my best to stabilize the environment as much as possible. I have some quesitons going on in another thread here about variacs and such as well. Much to learn!

Sounds good. Never hurts to have a power conditioner with your rig to have as much clean power as possible.

What's your rig and wiring at the moment?

I checked the incoming voltage - 120-121, and it is exactly the same whether testing directly from outlet or from Furman. It does fluctuate more quickly when the Furman is installed as opposed to not. Interesting. I am just running my guitar straight into my amp, which is running into a 2x12 cabinet. The wiring on the house is an isolated run for just these 3-4 outets direct to breaker panel, which is properly wired and professionaly checked/ensured.

that sounds pretty consistent man, you're lucky. I can watch my V go +/- 4 V variance depending what my one nutjob neighbor is doing. Good guy, but whoah, lol. If you can keep it within +/- 1 V of its rating, that sounds excellent for testing. You want another rabbit hole though, make sure to look at the V rating on the back of the amp, lol.

I actually did this just before seeing this LOL mine says 120 :) I noticed that on the Furman strip I have, it keeps everything 119-120. The AC215 keeps it at 120-121. If I go directly to outlet, it is 120-121. The amp sounds warmer and with more mids with less background hiss if I use the strip at 119-120 so... Probably will stick with that. If I need more high end, I can swap to the outlet directly or the 215. Funny how this all works together.

Nice, that should be very consistent. My power grid is held together with duct tape and bailing twine unfortunately, that's why I got the BB mentioned in your other thread. I was shocked to see the variance I get straight out of the wall. Luckily after having a way to regulate it somewhat, I like it it a bit under the power rating most times. Not a huge amount, but enough where I feel a difference. Also gives me a buffer if my wall voltage jumps. Going down lower with the volume cranked you can really feel the amp sag. I personally like it closer to the rating. From what I've read and seen, I don't think it hurts to hit the components with less voltage unless you are going way down, where the tubes might need a bias adjustment. Going over what the circuit was designed around can't be advantageous.

Completely agree!

I don't have any ground loop hum or anything. I think all of my initial worries were caused by a preamp tube that was on the fritz. Replaced it and I've been good since. I still was hoping to reduce noise as much as possible as far as background hum/hiss but it's already pretty quiet. Thanks man!
PERFECT! those damn ground loops drive musicians crazy. LOL.

Aside from all that, your rig is pretty simple. I cant think of anything else to be honest other than maybe a noise gate to remove any left over hum/hiss. That's about it.

my fav. standalone pedal is the Sun from Guptech:

Sustain is left as is and does great job cleaning up left over noise.

Good luck my friend.

Agreed! I appreciate your input. I'll check that out for sure, thanks!!

Love the SUN!
I really like how the Boss NS-2 is a noise suppresor, as it won't chop notes off, but reduces hum rather well with te right settings. Can't use it as I hate the buffer in the unit and how my guitar tone is overall affected by it. I used to have the Revv G8, and did not like that as I was always afraid of it clipping off the end of quiet sounds, even with the key input. I also did not like how it changed the guitar tone. A buddy is building me a 'Muzzle', which is basically a Zuul copy. I have a good feeling about this circuit. Fingers crossed!

ooh, didn't realize Guptech had a new gate out. The Military Weaponized Assault Chicken, lol.
I was actually checking that out as well. Looks pretty dang cool man. I had no idea this company even existed. Any pedals I have gotten lately have all been Griffin Audio stuff. No regrets there! Lol my friend is doing several pedals for me, which is just the coolest thing. Thanks for the new company. Will keep them on my radar

I had never heard of them either, but a buddy on here turned me on to them. I was using the decimator series for years, but prefer this gate. I barely have to crack the dial to quiet down my board. I kinda want the Assault Chicken now, lol, the gas never ends.

Years ago I had bought a Fortin Zuul, and it worked great. Then I found out about Guptech, bought their Noise gate and sold the Zuul.

I actually had them build me a custom pedal a couple of years back. It was an overdrive, Gate, delay.. sounded amazing. Ended up selling it after getting the Fractal FX8 as a lot of my pedals ended up in storage.

The Sun gate I still have though.

Cheers.

Oh that sounds killer, I really like their stuff. I got the Pdeq to mess around with, and it's fun to use with amps that don't have a presence and/or depth. I like what it does, simpler and more transparent than the eq's I've used. I wish I saw that go up for sale, that sounds killer, lol. I try the multi route every few years, but always end up wanting to mess around with particular pedals. Granted, nothing like the FX8 though.
