Just to add to the discussion, I shot this video the other day comparing 20 different v30's in 20 different cabs. I knew the differences would be there, but didn't think they'd be this fucking massive.
Glenn has the WORST ears. I couldn't imagine sitting and listening to him say there is no difference in sound in 'whatever' suits him that day. There is zero difference in a “new” v30…. Celestion should have sued glenn frickers fat ass like they almost did because of that video. It’s all horseshit. It’s a lottery, plain and simple.
He's got some experience producing and mixing. His mixes, while being nothing to write home about, aren't some bedroom kid's with POD Farm either. But getting sounds that really stand out is about details, IMO. I mean, I'm pretty sure his idols Fredrik Nordstrom and Andy Sneap are not like "yeah, grab any pickup and go".Glenn has the WORST ears. He can hear different V30s but can't hear the difference between a digital emulation and a real amp..... Ok.....
'YOU CANT EVEN HEAR THE DIFFERENCE!!" Sure, you goofy f*ck. Just because you can't seem to hear it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The way he talks in his videos is so annoying that it makes them almost unbearable to even listen to, not to mention all of the other trash.
I have watched quite a bit from that channel, as he seems experienced, but EVERY time I do, I walk away shaking my head.
I completely agree. That's why I still tune in from time to time, because his mixes are not bad, certainly much better than what I could do (I would think and hope). He's got some experience producing and mixing. Yup, everything in the signal chain affects the tone, including the wood of the guitar. Some things are very subtle like pickups and tone wood, some are drastic, like speakers. I think having an ear for the subtle things is what seperates the great producers/engineers from the average ones.Fucking exactly. This is what him, and all his dumbass followers fail to understand. Everything matters. Maybe these little things on their own are extremely extremely subtle, but they add up. He is the laughing stock of the metal music engineering world, I can assure you of that. It blows my mind how much people listen to this dude with literally ZERO credibility to his name. ZERO. And he makes a living off of telling people what matters and what doesn’t. It’s fucking asinine, and a disgrace to people who ACTUALLY do good work and try to get the best sonics possible out of their mixes.

THIS. Dude, I completely agree. I literally have my pedals in a specific order on my board due to the minute tonal shifts that are present, even when all of them are off. (No, one doesn't have a buffer either). That's why my buddy didn't believe me about the NOS tubes difference I had, he said my hearing was so far beyond his regarding those little details, he felt it probably wasn't audible to normal people. He found out he was wrong last week when I swapped in just 1 Blackplate into his amp. When I swapped the outputs, I saw his eyes tear up.Yup, everything in the signal chain affects the tone, including the wood of the guitar. 100% agree. Guitar cables matter tooI think this is what bothers me, is the lack of humility in these guys. You don’t know, what you don’t know. And these guys think they DO know and do have what it takes to make amazing tones. But if that were the case, he would have clients lining up around the block to work with him, but he doesn’t, never has, never will.
These dudes aren’t even open to the fact that maybe, just maybe they are missing something or don’t fully understand what they are talking about. The only thing that makes you good at this is the same as anything else, time. Constantly fucking up, constantly pulling your hair out, and getting good at being objective. There was ALOT I didn’t understand and there is still ALOTTTT I don’t, but one thing I do know for sure is that the small things matter, and they add up. Just like you said. None of the pros were born with golden ears, they just learned how to actively listen (in a good environment) and learned how to make decisions and how those decisions impact other parts of their mixes.
I use very few pedals, and sometimes none at all but the order they're plugged into each other definitely makes a difference in tone and feel, even when off. It shouldn't, but it does.I literally have my pedals in a specific order on my board due to the minute tonal shifts that are present, even when all of them are off.
They really do though! I was using some cables I completely thought were fine until I tried another beside it and it was wayyy quieter and didn't accent certain frequencies so much. Again, had a buddy listen blind, just guitar, cable and amp. Clearly could hear the difference between the two cables. Wild. I never knew until then.100% agree. Guitar cables matter too
I am just glad to know I'm not too crazyI use very few pedals, and sometimes none at all but the order they're plugged into each other definitely makes a difference in tone and feel, even when off. It shouldn't, but it does.
