Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom - Any of you guys have one?

It's been a while since I've bought a new guitar. I have an American Strat Ash HSS that I've been toying with the idea of selling to help fund a Les Paul.

I've been looking at the new "limited run" Les Paul Classic Custom and I'm very interested. I'm a big fan of the Les Paul Classic, and love how this one has some of the looks of a custom with a similar price to the LP Classic.

Any of you guys have one of these that can comment on it? AMS has a special running for 12 month payments with no interest. Might be taking advantage of that.

Yay or nay?

My preference goes to the white one, but the gold top (below) and the natural finish ones are pretty cool too.

Are you okay with the baked maple fretboard? To me that just looks off on a les Paul, though I haven't played a Classic Custom LP.
 
Chambered and baked maple fretboard? That's not really a Les Paul in my opinion :D

Ya know it may be a totally excellent axe. Just one that looks like an LP but probably will not sound like one. I guess if you put some sheptones or BKP's in there it may sound a bit like one.
 
Ha! Good feedback. I always here stuff about chambered vs solid. Gonna have to play them back to back and see.

If yer gonna do the chambered versus solid back-to-back thing, then you're gonna have to "feel" them back-to-back too... That's where the magic is :yes:
 
I bought one last weekend and got it back from a setup today. It's staying. The baked maple feels like ebony as far as slickness goes, it's weight relieved and not chambered, and I dig the looks...got the ebony one, and it's a badass. Weight is around 10lbs.

I also have a 12 lb solid body luthier built LP that cost around the same price. The heavier LP has BKP Holy Divers in it, and I can go from Gary Moore to Slayer with a flick of a switch.

LPCC has 57 Classics in it, and for me it's more suited to rock/blues, just because of the lower output pups. Great crunch, sustains forever, and it's a good value if you plan on keeping it. Haven't seen many up for resale yet, but I wouldn't plan on getting my money back. It's ok. I think it's a fantastic guitar; it stays. Hope this helped. Any more questions, feel free.

As someone that's new to the LP, but not to high end guitars, I am really impressed by the 2012 Standard I picked up in a trade recently. It sounds killer, plays killer, looks killer, and is one of the few guitars I've liked with the stock pickups. I lean to the heavier side in tastes, and usually almost immediately swap pups for some BK's. I've used Tims pups for many years. These BB Pros A5's however, have really grown on me. I like boosting, and usually run at least a 12k+ screaming pup into it, but I'm diggin the lower output PAF vibe boosted. They are spec'd at 8.7k, but they sure feel/sound like a hot pup when I'm boosting. It's making me re-consider how I run my setup tbh.

I liked it so much, I grabbed another one in trade. One is a 2008 spec(chambered), and the other is a 2012 spec(weight relieved). As far as I can tell, there is very little difference in sound quality or playability between them once I got them setup to my preferences. They both sound killer, and they both play as easy as any of the high priced superstrats or PRS's I've owned. As someone that's just looking at comparing them to other "off the shelf" offerings currently on the market, Gibson is still making a kickass instrument IMO. I've noticed they are VERY sensitive to setup as far as sound and playability however.
 
I don't like anything about those guitars from their spec to their looks. The lp custom headstock overlay doesn't go at all with the light colored maple fingerboard and it looks like something a knockoff would have. Not to mention the fact that these are multi piece bodies. I would think you would be much much better off finding an older used lp custom or a lp classic from 1990 to early 2000's as they are much nicer builds and spec and they will hold their value if u ever had to sell. You could find a real classic or custom used for same or less money If u look around.
 
I don't understand why they had to bake the maple on these. They should have just used regular maple like on the CS Custom. I'm sure it sounds alright, but it makes it look so phony, in my opinion.

never played one, though
what really pisses me off is the fake plastic perloid inlays
they always used plastic on trapezoid models since the 60's, but never in block inlay models
now we can't even differ them from the chinese copies
bet they're already using poly finishes

Ive never played one or seen one but I heard somewhere that one wasnt good once.
 
I played one but didn't care for the 57 classic pups (I prefer higher output right now). But that's not to say you won't, everyone had their own prefs. Just go, play, decide.
 
For me I would rather have a real custom than the classics. The split diamonds only belong on real customs :) A lot of people have them. I' not a fan of the BM on the new ones. The older ones are pretty cool. I bought a 2012 traditional plus instead when I was looking into Lesters. I liked the 57 in the neck position but didn't like the 57+ in the bridge so I ended up replacing it and eventually the neck 57 as I wanted dual cream. If the 57 was cream under the cover I would have kept it.

I like high quality stuff. It it feels good to play, and sounds good. Fuck it. I often imagine what the guitar player back in the day though of solid body electrics, when the were accustomed to playing acoustics guitars.

That being said, I haven't played any gibson past the mid 90's that impressed me. Gibson Les Paul is my absolute favorite though. Wish they put more energy into quality rather than marketing.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I see most of the responses of people that don't like it is based on principle. - Like it's a Custom wannabe. I understand that. However, for the money it seem like they have to cut costs somewhere. When you put the plastic inlays, multi-piece body and things like that aside... It seems like it's a pretty cool guitar. And @Steinmetzify bought one and likes it. Again, downsides aside.

What's the deal with the baked maple fretboard? My Strat has a regular sealed maple fretboard and I've also had guitars with rosewood and ebony. So far I like ebony the best. I have to get a hold of one of these soon and try it. Wonder if my local GC has 'em?
 
My local GC can't keep em in stock, dude. Every one they get sells immediately. I went to another local shop that's a Gibson dealer; they had a couple that they ordered in for people and let me play one. Told me they'd order another for me if I wanted to try it and weren't worried if I hated it. They can't keep em in either. Go try it. You might love it.
 
^^^ Ha. Ok. I see. I have 2 big shops nearby here in SoCal. Maybe I get lucky and they have one.
