Honestly Matt, when you and Nick both agreed and sent your SL2's in, that did it for me too! Since I know you guys haven't really bought into the various mods and such...........it clinched it for me and boy am I glad it did. What a great sounding module.

The mod is just so sick. Its amazing. I would never want to go back to SL2 now and I really did love that module.

Glad everyone is liking it!

Dude, you done good bra!!

Sounds like you'll have some more incoming real soon.......    :D

Jeff, any plans for this to become a standard module?

Could this become SL3??

I would be really curious to see what this sound like compared to my Randall Scary that okstrat did a warmth and clarity ..

The Scary to me has that percussive attack and kind of mid squish that I hear in the SL2 .but it was tighter with more upper mid snarl ..

this sounds like the voicing maybe similar.
Maybe when I order E2 I will just get a GNR

I'm so glad I did the GNR. I was doing a lot of "marshall tone chasing" with Dave's mods, modding the EG3/4, etc. Having Jeff mod my SL2 -> GNR was awesome, as it really filled the void for Marshall tones I was hearing in my head. Since then, I've modded my EG3/4 back to a 1000pf cap, and am loving it. I modded it initially to get the Marshall tones I was hoping. But...now that I have the GNR, I wanted more of a "dark / smokey" module for leads, and warm lower gain stuff. Totally glad to have it back to stock. Love the EG5 for that aggressive / percussive tone...Love the GNR for that grindy Marshall tone...and they all sound great w/ my RT2/50 w/ 6550s / E34Ls or TS5881s / E34Ls.

The E34L's are definitely staying in my RT2/50. Love both the TS5881s / 6550s w/ the E34Ls. With the 6550s it adds a bit more headroom, but still punchy as hell. With the TS5881s it has a bit more rawness around the edges. Definitely love having the RT2/50. I have to say...I like it better than the VHT 2/50/2 and 2/90/2. My VHT is definitely going up for sale. The RT2/50 is the best power section I've played to date.

Love the Mod50 power section too. They are just different. Great in how they compliment each other for sure.

 selling your VHT????????? WOW im shocked, but understand as I have 2 RT's :D
Dude you saved me soooooo much money. I was jones'n to try a VHT cause nobody had compared them with the RT and thought I might be missing something. Thanks!

aeroic, how would you compare the master volume taper / response between the various power amps? also, what characteristics do you like better about the randall (e.g. is it mostly tube mixing or is the more to it)

Is the GnR mod only available on the SL2 module or can it be performed on any other modules? Don't own a SL2 so I'm just curious if any of my other modules might be a candidate for a GnR-mod...

I e-mailed Jeff and asked the question about modding the SL into a GNR. He said it needed to be an SL2

I'm just about to pull the trigger on modding my SL2 to the GnR but I'm wanting to hear some clips first.

Does anyone have a clip?

+1 on the clips. I like the sound of the SL2, very close to my JCM-900 SL-X. I would hate to have the GnR mod done and get further from the sound I like, but your descriptions make it sound like the mod will make it even closer.

I think I am going to send in my SL2 in with my RM100 and have it mod'ed. :D

I wish I could post some clips but I keep buying other shit than recording gear :D It so so good, that I sent Jeff the HBE to mod to Gnr  It has more balls and it really is "THE BOMB"I finally got to the B side of it and man it just tears into heaven!Prolly my favorite module as of now X2

I've always heard great things about the VHT power amps and wondered how they stack up against the Randall RT, at least for use in an M4 rig. I've been pretty close to buying one of the VHT 2/50's but I think maybe I will save my pennies now and wait for the new Egnater power amp!

I will tell you what, the RT 2/50 is a great power amp. VHT's sound great, but the Randall sounds sweeter to my ears in with my rig. Add to that the switchable power section and you've got winner.
The new power amp sounds like it may be a winner too.

Yes, I have an RT 2/50 in my rig now and have always been happy with it, both with my M4 and IE-4. But you know, on every forum you get people saying the VHT is the best power amp ever...so it's interesting to hear another perspective from someone who has actually tried both!

Couldn't agree more. Lots of good info here and good people to share it.

I've used the VHT 2/50/2 w/ EL34s and 6550s, and the VHT 2/90/2 w/ KT88s and 6550s, and the RT2/50 w/ E34L's / 5881s and E34L's / 6550s. Even just running the RT2/50 w/ 6550s, I don't feel at all like I'm missing something w/ the RT2/50 compared to the VHT 2/90/2. I personally preferred the 2/90/2 to the 2/50/2 as I thought it was tighter, and a bigger rounder sound. The RT2/50 has all of that and more (meaning MIDI switching, self biasing, etc). You could set up either the 2/50/2 or the 2/90/2 to run any of the tube just like the RT2/50 (I've done it...so I know its perfectly possible). But the design for switching tubes, etc. with the RT2/50 is so much nicer.

Of all the power amps I've owned / used over the years (VHT 2150, VHT 2/50/2, VHT 2/90/2, Marshall EL34 50/50, Marshall EL34 100/100, Marshall 20/20, Marshall 9100, Marshall 9200, Mesa 20/20, Mesa 50/50, Mesa 2:90, Randal RT2/50, Marshall Silver Jubilee power section (which has a pre-eq return...so you can use the eq as tone shaping w/o using the preamp of the Silver Jubilee), Marshall JCM 800 power section (with a pre-eq return), and others I'm forgetting)....I'd rank them like this as far as tone.

1. VHT 2150
2. Tie - VHT 2/90/2 & Randall RT2/50
3. Marshall Silver Jubilee power section
4. Marshall JCM 800 (with a pre-eq return mod)
5. Marshall 9200 / EL34 100/100
6. VHT 2/50/2
7. Marshall 9100 / EL34 50/50
8. Mesa 2:90
9. Mesa 20/20
10. Marshall 20/20
11. Mesa 50/50

If you add in flexibility, and ease of use for a live situation (easy tube swaps in the event of a failure, etc), the only change would be that the Randall RT2/50 would come to #1 for me, with the 2/90/2 being #2 (for weight reasons), and the 2150 being #3.

But that's just my opinion.

As far as the GNR recordings, I took the day off yesterday to finish up a lot of projects down in my "man cave / recording studio." I'm nearly finished with all of them, which means my recording studio is nearly back to functioning again! (This 2-3 months w/o having it has SUCKED!)

Look for recordings in the next day or two.

Outstanding!

Glad to hear your opinion on the RT Eric. Now I can focus on buying some Eggy TM4x12s without feeling like I'm missing something without having a VHT 2/90/2. Not saying I wont end up with one someday but now I can direct my money on other things Ive been jones'n for. Like looking for a TC 1128 Eq.

Im sending in my SL2 with my RM100 head and having them done all at once. :D
