Guthrie Govan on Going 'Fully' Digital: 'It Forced Me to Think in New Ways'

I use axe stuff for my soloing while still using my tubes heads for rhythm

It makes a lot more sense for people who don't play any riffs 🤷
Yup. I just watched a video with Karl Sanders from Nile and he said plugins are already there for single note lead playing but don’t measure up for chords/rhythms. Something about the digital stuff messing with the intermodulation distortion or harmonic series when playing simultaneous notes. Maybe that’s why all that digital stuff sounds ‘off’ to me when playing chords. Let’s face it, two notes or more at a time is a more complex signal than just one note.

agree, but they're (plug-ins) getting there IMO. I sold all my digital modelers except my SY-1000 and HX-Effects.

I've been using PolyChrome DSP McRocklin Suite plugin since it was released earlier this year.

They're certainly close, and getting there

but I don't think they're anywhere near as detailed or reactive as a real amp yet.

I use the Jason Richardson plugin pretty regularly, and it is fantastic (for a plug in)

But it stands out on my recordings, especially when I mix it with something that excels at rhythm tones

It doesn't retain any dynamics, even with the gain relatively low.

Which actually works great if I'm doing shred wank, but not great if I'm playing real music

I was talking with someone the other day (he's a RTer but doesn't post much anymore), he's had the AXE, Kemper, Helix, Quad C....all gone now....his comment was it was "like wearing a condom". Lol
No, playing a tube amp with heavy duty earplugs in is like wearing a condom as it’s still the real thing but a diminished experience. Digital is More like only getting to third base with a fleshlight.

Wow that guy no one knows is so cool

I’m sure he is more in the know than Guthrie Govan, Metallica and Iron Maiden

Offended much? Sheesh....I'll always say that a modeler takes a back seat to ANY good tube amp....period. A good tool to add for convenience/recording/not having to shlep a ton of gear to a gig? Absolutely.

And please, don't try to say that because those bands use modelers, it's because they're SMART. HAHAH. Nope. It's because of the convenience, period. Not having to hire 20 roadies extra to carry in all the cabs etc.
They are EASY to move.
They sound good(but NOT as good as a good tube amp; or else they'd have switched LONG ago haha)
They are easy to replace.

Not hard to see why many bands use them on tour. These days, any major act will try to save money any way they can. Modelers are a huge part of that savings equation.
But, I'd bet top dollar that NONE of the players have sold their tube amps.

Offended? Nah, I just have used/gigged with the stuff dozens of times and I found the comment by your anonymous friend to be well off the mark.

Well I believe that you believe this, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

Yeah, do you also play 200 stadium dates a year? 🙄
Us gear geeks get emotional about the stupidest shit. If there was a $500 pedal that could 100% recreate the exact tone and feel of any tube amp ever produced it would be looked down upon by many.

Ever see people get riled up about relic finished guitars? Same energy lol

???

I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Too bad it isn't true. Since I've owned/played most of them.

Do you not see the irony in you saying this about a hypothetical product lol?
Let me re phrase....

If there existed a 500$ pedal that TRULY sounded AND felt just like a tube amp, I'd own one.

As of right now however, that pedal doesn't exist. Yet.
