Guys who play out (or used to)…question

This was a long time ago but 90% of the time I brought 1 guitar. 50% of the 7 years I gigged I only had one guitar. One amp(two cabs of course) and one guitar. Ahhhh, the simple days. I only broke a string once during a show. I fixed it before the song was half way over.

In my old originals band, I brought 2. One Standard tuning... and One Drop D, which also acted as a backup in case something went wrong with the drop D guitar.

With my current cover band, it'll depend on the set list.. If we're doing a full 40-50 song multi set list, I bring 3 guitars. 1 standard tuning, 1 E flat and one as a backup. Otherwise, it 1 standard tuning and 1 backup.

Cheers

2
My Les Paul
and something with a floyd, so either a Jackson or a Charvel, depending on the setlist either a H/H or a H/S/S

I can't believe you guys only take one guitar to gigs lmfao

If I ever did that I am 1000% positive my one guitar would disintigrate
One guitar guys can provide some entertainment. Guitar fails, so they run to the other band(s), begging to use one of their guitars which is usually tuned differently or has 30 strings. Then both bands get mad at broken guitar guy because of all the delays and fucking around.

:ROFLMAO:

This happened to me ONCE when i was like 19 years old, and I have literally never taken one guitar to a gig, for all the hundreds of gigs since

Then you've got dick butt who shows up for a gig and forgets to bring ANY guitar. Now that's entertainment!

I play in a punk band, there's alot of those dick butts we play shows with

It's always something

I need a guitar
I need cords
I need a cab
I need an amp
I need talent

First band I joined that was touring regularly, they needed a bass player. I’ve always been a guitar player but at 18 just wanted to go on tour so I played bass for a few years touring almost non-stop at times. But, not only was I not much of a guitar geek like I am today, I didn’t care about bass guitars so I just had one and rarely changed the strings.

I don’t remember ever having any serious issues but maybe I did, I dunno. Either way, I get anxiety thinking about that today.

That's what youth is all about !!! I can't believe I did a few shows in front of 1K+ people without any backup, replacement strings or cables or anything that would have provided a minimum of security. I clearly remember showing up at soundcheck with my guitar on the back and a few picks in my jean pocket. I remember another big show where our drummer couldn't make it and we played with the drummer of the previous band who improvised everything on the spot. I can't believe we pulled that off in front of 500 people. I was about 20. Now that I'm 50, I get near panic attack just thinking about it LOL

How many guitars do you typically bring?

Roll the dice with just one?

Main ride and a backup?

7 Strats with different pickups that the audience can’t hear?

Just curious. Usually just two for me but I’ve got the itch to go partial rockstar and bring 3 or 4 😆
2. Main or fav, standard tuning and a backup with drop D that I used in a set with drop D stuff, usually half a set. Also had a backup amp head in the SUV, with some spare tubes etc. Gig bag had many cables in case one went to shit.
Last band we had a sound guy who also had his own lights; so all we had to do was set up our personal gear. No major teardown either; although we always helped him shlep everything to his trailer.

7...multiple tunings and capos. Sucks but cheaper than paying, feeding and lodging a guitar tech.

Used to do the thing quite a bit. Did it with one, unless you're on the road for a long period you don't really need more than 1 IMO. Especially if it's your local venue.

With that said I haven't broken a string in probably well over a decade but the other guitarist definitely broke a string mid song and depending on what string and if you use a Floyd it can be a huge problem. Having a backup isn't going to hurt.

Although I play bass and guitar, I only play bass in bands, and now at almost 52 it’s almost only temporary pickup gigs.
I only bring one bass to a show or practice. My gear is solid and in great working condition. Oregon’s humidity is relentless on anything metal, so my stuff if always getting updated and maintained as I do all my own tech work. I do bring extra strings in my gig bag as the only issue I’ve ever had was a broken G string, I think once. A towel, tuner, bottled water, and maybe a 9v battery are all included in my kit and are needed far more than a backup bass. If I was touring I’d have a redundant kit but not around town.

Always 2

I've gotten away with just 1 several times but it's tempting fate

I've busted strings on floating floyds in the middle of solos and was glad to have my backup lol

Minimum of 2, although my Quantum case holds 3. I may look into an Enki.

The first time you break a string on a Floyd equipped guitar live is fun, you can't even hobble through the song. It's rare, but made me paranoid. Pitch shift for anything weird. Guitar doesn't matter, audience can't tell the difference.

Had this happen to me once and it made me immediately appreciate many nights of floyd rose shenanigans and knowledge of harmonics on the board. I about had a heart attack and couldn’t see shit on stage. Everyone should cut the high E string on their Floyd guitar and then attempt to cover a song front to back without it sounding like you’re an idiot. It’s a life changing experience.

I always brought 2 guitars for each tuning. Now that I play Les Paul’s more often I could see not needing it.

Yep :p

Also, the first time when I owned multiple amps, but made the CHOICE to not bring a second was the first time (and only ever to this point) I ever had an amp fail at a gig. Thank God I by luck happened to have a Fly Rig I had borrowed from my cousin to screw around with in one of the cases I brought.

2 guitars. My old band had two tunings, so no choice. Still would always have a backup regardless.
2 Amps. Although one stayed in the trailer. Inconvenient but still convenient, better than having nothing. Fall back for both guitarists.
1 Cab traveling, 2 Cabs local.
Pedal - also had a backup delay pedal on my board in case I had issue with the racked pedals and gear. Which I did one time, guitarists from another band unplugged one of my cables in my rack (intentionally or unintentionally, I'll never know) and I didn't have time to trouble shoot so quick cable change to the board and I was fine. Always needed my delay lol and tuner.
