Dude same! I’ve grown to love everything except Lulu (still haven’t listened to it) and 72 (only listened once)
My Hot take; but Lulu has some great Hetfield tone and riffs hidden in there.... it's just that the songs and whole vibe of the album are just uber arty for Metallica. If you can get past those Lou's Abe Simpson vocals, arty lyrics, droney structure and can just focus on Hetfield's guitar it actually sounds good.
I think because it's primarily a Lou Reed album with Metallica as his studio musicians/comeback vehicle/table they just got a good heavy tone and left it alone, unlike DM, HWTSD and 72 where they just seem to keep on fucking with it until it's a hot mess. Adding way too much herbs and seasonings (no pun intended) to spoil what should be a good cut of meat. The Lulu tone is def better than 72 Seasons.
The riff in 'Dragon' is killer. 'Frustration' is too. 'Pumping Blood' riff at around 3:10 is cool. 'Mistress Dread' is forearm burner. Kind of a bummer they wasted some good riffs on that album.

Dang man, might just have to check it out, can’t be worse than 72 hah!

Just to stay on track to the thread, I've been loving my Wizzer MCII solid for the past few months. It's all I've been using instead of the Diezel's and such. I think I needed a tone change and it's been kicking arse everytime I plug in.

Ha, just stay focussed on James guitar tone and riffs!... stay safe from the rest of the album's health hazards :)

edit: Pretend you're in a Guitar Center and James is playing riffs for just you whilst a whole heap of other noise and clatter is going on in the background.

Found a YT vid with just the riffs that might ease the process?

So @Bram576 - did you decide not to sell? I don't remember seeing it in the CL. Cool clip BTW - me likey

You hear that distinctive dry, crisp, scorching sound almost like the sonic equivalent of a gin and tonic lol.

That just gave me a great Thread idea

Wow, that almost makes me mad. There are some legit nice grooves and tone in there. It's a shame the band let Lou Reed shit all over it.
Sounds like it could have been a slightly heavier more aggressive Load / Reload / Garage Inc kinda thing if James had been writing lyrics and singing.

Here’s the same riffs recorded with the hell razor

And combined for a comparison

First is MC second is hell razor.

They both sound amazing. Really great recording. I still prefer the mc by a small margin, but it is really close. Sounds like just a little more presence in that recording, but honestly, the clarity is there in both.

Thanks man! Yeah it’s tough. I feel like I dial my wizards in pretty close to one another. The hell razor seems a bit bigger and more gainy, whereas the modern classic a bit more clear. It also really puts out what you put in. I was really picking hard on those and it came out.

The hellrazor sounds sick in that 2nd OP video but I couldn't help but notice....Why does every palm mute sound like a harmonic? If that's what the amp does all the time then yikes.....

Naw that’s just me curving the pick when down picking

Yeah I thought it might be something like that but it was really hard to tell. I just thought maybe this amp was so high gain that it just squealed with every note or something, thanks.

In context of the post though it's happened to me a few times...a couple of amps for sure...but the most interesting one to me was a VHT D412 with P50-e.

I didn't really like the cab. It wasn't horrible at all but I had 2 other cabs (even cheap cabs) i easily chose over it and it sat in my garage unused.

But when I plugged it in to show the buyer that it workee, I finally heard the magic and was like damn...I do not want to sell this lol

I must have misread the initial title, I thought you had already decided the MC was packing. Personally preferred the MC just from just the comparison clips. Both sound mean though, great riffin..

Angling the pick I guess a better way of putting it. Gary holt technique.
Are there even people who don’t angle pick? It naturally angles more or less.

Audio doesn’t play on my phone, so I can’t know what harmonic sound are you guys talking about. Is it like pick scratching the winding or what?

Indeed it does, but some manage to avoid it altogether.

IIRC Paul Gilbert trained himself to attack the strings at a perfect right angle 'cause he hates it when the attack is "smudged".

In theory, minimal smudging should be the ideal for better articulation, methinks.

EDIT:
Could have been Marty Friedman. I"m pretty-sure it was one of those guys.

I tried adjusting my picking to that at one point, but I could only do it with flimsy picks, and my tone suffered. I wish I could do it, but angled is the only way I get over the strings without sounding like :poop:
