Herbert for Rock tones?

The Herbert has a great Master Volume. If your friend could not use it in small venues then I am not sure what amp he can use. Even the low wattage amps get very loud for small venues and if their master volume is not good then they only sound good cranked which can get you kicked out of a lot of places. The Herbert IMHO is the best master volume amp I have owned. (However I did not buy to play at low volumes, even though sometimes this is necessary for some venues)
