I already know what most are going to say, "Get Herbert".

I'm tossing around getting either an Uberschall or Herbert. What I would like to know is if the Herbert can match the sonic goods that an Uberschall can dish out in the hard/heavy realm? I already know the Herbert will definately be more versitile. But I'm looking at the Uberschall for it's ungodly ability in heavier styles of music.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mike.

You can hear some recordings on my band's site: http://www.divinity.ca - the left side is Uber and the right side is Herbert

With out even reading this and just clkicking on the clip I could INSTANTLY TELL THE HERBERT WAS ON THE RIGHT SIDE...

I do not like the herbert AT ALL for metal tones and can recognize that amp blind folded with ear plugs in my head...

The uber smoked it IMO... The herbert just has this annoying flavor of high gain to my ears...

Oh ya I would suggest the thread starter to also try an ENGL SE EL34 just to open things up to more possibilites...

Oh ya YOUR BAND IS SICK, brutal vocals, love it...

WOW, talk about a "thread from the dead"!!

I actually did look at the ENGL SE as an option. But I have yet to regret my Uberschall purchase. It smokes!!! Right now I swap back and forth between my SLO & Uberschall. When I play one of them for a while (with nothing but a smile on my face) and need a change, I play the other one and keep on smiling. I am a BIG Mesa DR/RK fan, but oddly enough, neither have been turned on in months.

I remember this thread :)

It's funny how some of the people who commented in this thread back then, now have either switched sides or sold the amps they were defending

I owned both for about 8 months. Even though I sold my Uber in favor of the Herbert, I've recently contemplated getting another one. However, now that I have the perfect tone from my Splawn Nitro, I don't see that happening. I just got a Mesa Roadster for my loose, mushy tones.

Thanks! I like both (and owned both) but ended up preferring the Herb. I've since sold it and am using a VH4 now, but it's pretty similar to my ears.

I've owned both and ended up preferring the Herbert because I found it more tweakable and appreciated the extra channel and other features it has. Both have good tones for Metal and good clean channels, master volumes, FX loops etc. so I would try them out and listen to as many clips as you can. The Uber is still my 2nd favorite amp but it had some things that annoyed me in the end so I sold it. If I was rich I would have kept both amps. I still have and love the Herbert.

You can hear some recordings on my band's site: http://www.divinity.ca - the left side is Uber and the right side is Herbert, this is pretty close to what they sounded like in the room IMO though of course they can be tweaked differently etc.

Some killer playing in your band. Not my style of music, but I can still recognize talent.

The picture on your site shows (I assume you) with an VH-4 and your other guitarist with an Uber?

Thanks, and yep. The song was recorded with a Herbert but I use VH4 now. Both great amps!

Uber - modded JCM800 killer

I would take an 800 over an uber any time of the week, but they are not even on the same page voicing wise IMO

So would I. I played all these new amps and i would rather play a Mesa Boogie Mark III and a JCM800, and maybe a Roadking for newer heavy tones. All the best guitar tones in the history of rock and metal existed before all these whiz bang amps came out anyway.

It's just an evolution of tone and it really depends on how far you want to go back in time. Before there was Marshall; Fender, Gibson and Grestch were king. Then came along HiWatt and Mesa Boogie whose tones where new and different. But they are considered classics now. And the SLO which was once considered the "new" amp on the market is now one of the amps most others are judged by. The SLO is on more recordings than most people would ever want to admit to. The Uberschall is an evolution in tone that comes from the Mesa DR with a little Marshall tone mixed in. Although they are different in tone structure and feel you can see simularities. Today everybody is raving about the Deizel amps, tomorrow it will be somebody else.

That's an apples and oranges comparison though. Those amps have great core tones, but they can't do what a modern amp does for me:

- 4 killer tweakable core tones: clean, crunch, heavy rhythm, smooth lead - all with instant silent switching in one head.
- Multiple transparent, switchable parallel FX loops for running with pedals or rack gear including MIDI integrated
- Ultra heavy build quality and instant access to customer service from the builder, lifetime warranty mods etc.

This replaces a lot of external gear and allows me to get a variety of tones in a compact powerful setup live.

I'm for one very happy with new line of amp makers. Classics are good, but I'm very tired of listening to that same sound over & over.

Did you get a chance to try the Uberschall in stereo with the SLO? (I have an SLO myself and am contemplating either an Ecstasy or Uber). Btw, nice clips in your sig...what amps were used?

I have them side by side right now. Not in stereo. The band I was working in at the time of getting this set up fell apart. So right now I'm just enjoying each one.

Thanks, for the compliment on the clips. They were recorded with three (3) amps going at one time. The tracks were mixed like this; Triaxis/2:90 on one side, Mesa DR on the other side, RoadKing in the middle. Solos were SLO one side, Triaxis/2:90 on the other side. Cleans were the SLO and Triaxis/2:90.
