I feel bad for anyone who is an addict, but I feel less bad for someone in their 50's with millions who can't get his shit figured out. At some point it's never going to happen. Retire from music for good, sort yourself out. People talk about "demons"..some of them are brought onto yourself. Sorry, not sorry.

This ^^ right here is why I question our humanity and the state of our World daily. Addiction does not give a shit how much money you have, race, creed, age, etc, etc... it is an internal, wired disease that spiderwebs through the best and worst of us. And some's 'demons' were implanted long before they knew what demons were... the mind and body sometimes have to find ways to fight those demons they never asked for... and addiction becomes a way of life. We..and that's you too.. never truly know who someone is, their story, their life. And while yes, some addicts just don't want to do the work and get better... there are so many out there trying. And I go back to the top... it's a shame another thread has to be twisted into something negative.... shame.

This exactly. Nothing in the world means shit when your head is messed up. Nothing is straightforward when it comes to addiction.
The normal feedback loop of seek for reward is completely corrupted. And that is just the start of it.

I only just learned about James relapsing and going to rehab earlier today. I wondered why I was thinking about past partners who had/have terrible drug addictions and how it is a lifelong battle to keep it at bay. It reminded me of Season 2 in Breaking Bad where Jane falls back into heroin. You get so conditioned into the process that just seeing something can cause you to relapse.

Personally, I think that James never got over Cliff Burton's death. Cliff passed away 33 years and a day ago from today. Cliff became a surrogate family for James within Metallica, after he felt abandoned by his own family - first his father walking out on them, then his mother dying from cancer and it not being acknowledged due to their Christian Science religion. I find it strange that James has never on record mentioned his sister, though there's a Christmas picture out there with him and his sister as kids. I also keep wondering if James was deliberately bitter towards Jason because he "wasn't Cliff". If so, maybe that was a factor as well.
Alcohol became a vice to mask the pain while music became the creative channel to positively express that pain. But when you quit one method, the addiction just jumps to something else. I read that after rehab, James became obsessed with buying the right pair of jeans despite having 20 in the cupboard. Or eating chocolate. Then the covering himself in tattoos. He even said it was "a new addiction". There's nothing wrong with those things individually, except when they disrupt your daily life, such as looking after your family. He first went into rehab when his kids were babies or toddlers. Now they are all either grown up (I think his eldest is 21) or near the end of high school. Just the shame and self-guilt and stigma of mental health can pull someone back into addiction, regardless of the irony of doing so.

I did not plan to see Metallica in concert because I haven't been keen on the Axe-FX guitar tones I've heard lately. Plus I can't afford it at this stage anyway and have other things going on. If it was a secret small gig in a pub I'd go though. I hope James gets through his issues and the band gets through this.

I still wonder if he will be cashing those checks while in "rehab" for all of those Stone brewery beers with his name on them that he is making profit of, or the whiskey he has his name emblazoned on. Or will he donate all of that to people struggling to beat addiction?

I'd say the latter. I read that Metallica have been helping out schools with musical instruments and music programmes or something. In fact I'm surprised that Metallica didn't start some sort of donation drive from concerts towards treating addiction already.

I imagine the touring lifestyle is not conducive to sorting out an alcohol addiction
I saw Metallica open the Chase Center in their home town of San Fran 3 weeks ago
Coming down from that high would be a tough ask for an addictive personality, and that is without considering the after-show
The energy and adulation in that arena was powerful

Not being an addict, I can't reasonably judge how much better it would be to stay at home, on a routine and away from outside influence
I am lead to believe, in some people, it would make little difference

Rich.... poor...
Help is available for everyone.
I’m sure he wouldnt go to the same clinics as Joe shit the ragman does
But help is available to all.
Different levels though most certainly.

He's a human being, he may have deep pockets, but he bleeds the same.

All that talk about fuck him, he's privileged because he's rich, blah blah blah...well, I stopped getting high 12 years ago and unless someone knows and has experienced addiction first hand, imo, they have no right to sit there and mud sling.

For those who have experienced it, they should know better than to judge the guy.

James will be fine.....relatively.

The more you have in life the more you realize a lot of the same personal issues remain. The money & material things can only help to mask the underlying issues. Once you “have everything” you could want, but the personal issues/demons still remain.......It fucks with your head even more because then you really know you can’t ‘buy’ your way out of your issues

I hope this does make you question. Question why you feel so much for a man who could give a shit less about you and has no idea that you even exist. Why? Because he wrote some cool riffs 30 years ago? A man who lives in a giant mansion, who has more money than anyone you know will ever have and can't get help or does not care to get it. You are totally wrong thinking we are all on "equal ground" fighting addiction. Money matters. Total fucking deluded bullshit. He would be in jail right now, or dead if he were an "everyday guy". These people have the best doctors, the best retreats, the best everything. Sorry if I don't shed tears for a guy who has had every chance on earth, and his biggest loss is having to cancel a tour where he will make millions..again.

Sorry.. fail ^^.

"Fail". Yeah okay buddy... put yourself in the position of a guy who is in his 50's, no end in sight of retirement who can barely walk from multiple back surgeries due to working his dick into the dirt, addicted to pills because he has no chance of rehabilitation and no other way out..trying to find a way to make it all work. I guess he doesn't have that sympathy from everyone or anyone, does he? But JAYMEZ HETFIELD...yeah he is the guy we should sit and feel sorry for...a guy with every chance in the world. Give me a fucking break. In his case it's actually more disgusting because he promoted drug abuse throughout his entire career as a "cool lifestyle"..how many people did that effect? Fuck him. It's fucking disgusting honestly.

We are talking about a public figure and part of American history who influenced multiple generations in music and emotionally because a large number could relate to his message. Yes, if his music and lyrics influenced or inspired us I think it is ok to give a fuck about that individual and hope he makes out ok. I bet the amount of lives he saved through someone relating to his music is well over a 100 people.

Now some broke dick 50 year old who made poor life choices that has no creativity in his pinky nail that could not influence our culture no matter how loud he farted because he's constipated from all those pain pills he took, why again should he be compared to Hetfield and why should we gave the same amount of concern to broke dick?

Guess the temptation of that new Metallica “Blackened” signature whiskey was too much for him. Recovering addicts endorsing their own line of booze, what could go wrong? Lol

James Hetfield is an alcoholic, yet profits from the sale of alcohol. Ironic? Hypocritical? Sort-of, maybe. Depends on your perspective. Anyone old enough to drink should be wise enough to make their own decisions. Calling him out on this would the same as blaming gun manufactures for gun related crime, cigarettes for cancer, Marshall for hearing loss, etc... Do what you do, but do it responsibly.

Omg you mean to tell me he's an actual human being just like the rest of us?!

I called it back in June....too bad I was right.

Wow -- there's something to call attention to yourself for. "Look at me, I was right" about an addict that might relapse

Do you need that much validation in your life?

Because broke dick’s life matters

petejt touched a bit on what I was going to say. To be in your early 20s and peaking and in an instant see your best friend die in front of you, does things to a person. I have several friends with PTSD and they say that it just doesn't go away....ever.

Another thing I'll touch on as the father of an addict, is that as many have mentioned, it doesn't discriminate. I used to be the one saying things like "natural selection", "why don't they just stop", etc...….until it was someone I loved. Now, I'll support and forgive people with no strings attached. That doesn't mean you let them walk all over you. You just make sure you do everything you can and be there for them.

um haven't you put him above everyone else as well? you think his wealth totally over rides mental health issues because "he is rich and should know better"...

you also seem to miss that he got to where he is because of hard work and dedication after coming from an extremely broken home. You totally come across as very insecure in your own skin dude

I recall the first time I heard Metallica. I don't recall the album title, but I believe it had a bloody hatchet or axe on the cover? A friend of mine purchased the album, and brought it to my house. It was the worst sounding music I had ever heard. I was laughing, because I thought it was satire.

Sad that threads like these draw out the cockroaches.

So you don't like the guy, post it once if you crave the attention of being the one to stand alone, and then fuck off to some other thread for your ignorant objectionist and outrage attention fix. No need to keep coming back to defend your point again and again especially when you declare how little you care about the subject in point.
Talking about addiction, some forum folks seem addicted to outrage posts in their patterns of threads through the forum.
