I only just learned about James relapsing and going to rehab earlier today. I wondered why I was thinking about past partners who had/have terrible drug addictions and how it is a lifelong battle to keep it at bay. It reminded me of Season 2 in Breaking Bad where Jane falls back into heroin. You get so conditioned into the process that just seeing something can cause you to relapse.
Personally, I think that James never got over Cliff Burton's death. Cliff passed away 33 years and a day ago from today. Cliff became a surrogate family for James within Metallica, after he felt abandoned by his own family - first his father walking out on them, then his mother dying from cancer and it not being acknowledged due to their Christian Science religion. I find it strange that James has never on record mentioned his sister, though there's a Christmas picture out there with him and his sister as kids. I also keep wondering if James was deliberately bitter towards Jason because he "wasn't Cliff". If so, maybe that was a factor as well.
Alcohol became a vice to mask the pain while music became the creative channel to positively express that pain. But when you quit one method, the addiction just jumps to something else. I read that after rehab, James became obsessed with buying the right pair of jeans despite having 20 in the cupboard. Or eating chocolate. Then the covering himself in tattoos. He even said it was "a new addiction". There's nothing wrong with those things individually, except when they disrupt your daily life, such as looking after your family. He first went into rehab when his kids were babies or toddlers. Now they are all either grown up (I think his eldest is 21) or near the end of high school. Just the shame and self-guilt and stigma of mental health can pull someone back into addiction, regardless of the irony of doing so.
I did not plan to see Metallica in concert because I haven't been keen on the Axe-FX guitar tones I've heard lately. Plus I can't afford it at this stage anyway and have other things going on. If it was a secret small gig in a pub I'd go though. I hope James gets through his issues and the band gets through this.

I saw Metallica open the Chase Center in their home town of San Fran 3 weeks ago
Coming down from that high would be a tough ask for an addictive personality, and that is without considering the after-show
The energy and adulation in that arena was powerful
Not being an addict, I can't reasonably judge how much better it would be to stay at home, on a routine and away from outside influence
I am lead to believe, in some people, it would make little difference

All that talk about fuck him, he's privileged because he's rich, blah blah blah...well, I stopped getting high 12 years ago and unless someone knows and has experienced addiction first hand, imo, they have no right to sit there and mud sling.
For those who have experienced it, they should know better than to judge the guy.

James will be fine.....relatively.
The more you have in life the more you realize a lot of the same personal issues remain. The money & material things can only help to mask the underlying issues. Once you “have everything” you could want, but the personal issues/demons still remain.......It fucks with your head even more because then you really know you can’t ‘buy’ your way out of your issues

Anyone old enough to drink should be wise enough to make their own decisions. Calling him out on this would the same as blaming gun manufactures for gun related crime, cigarettes for cancer, Marshall for hearing loss, etc... Do what you do, but do it responsibly.

petejt touched a bit on what I was going to say. To be in your early 20s and peaking and in an instant see your best friend die in front of you, does things to a person. I have several friends with PTSD and they say that it just doesn't go away....ever.
Another thing I'll touch on as the father of an addict, is that as many have mentioned, it doesn't discriminate. I used to be the one saying things like "natural selection", "why don't they just stop", etc...….until it was someone I loved. Now, I'll support and forgive people with no strings attached. That doesn't mean you let them walk all over you. You just make sure you do everything you can and be there for them.

I recall the first time I heard Metallica. I don't recall the album title, but I believe it had a bloody hatchet or axe on the cover? A friend of mine purchased the album, and brought it to my house. It was the worst sounding music I had ever heard. I was laughing, because I thought it was satire.
