Hetfield is "insecure" and needs hugs

Drugs wrecked his emotions, now hes all fucking misty. I'm rich could I get hug and some sympathy this rockstar life is so unfair.. really!

This, of course, was pre-planned or at least half assed talked about doing backstage… Weak in all categories!!! Stop making excuses and deliver! There’s a bunch of 50+ year old guitarists playing way better than they did in their 20’s! ..Wasn’t there a saying back in the day about not being pusillanimous?

I toss master of puppets in occasionally in my truck. But rarely
Dude, i still listen to MOP nearly every day at work. I'm 39 now, and have been a fan since i was 13 when the Load album was released. The reason I listen to it so much is because you just can't improve on perfection, and that album was it. Perfection.

Hetfield can do or say whatever the hell he wants.

He needs to watch Lemmy as an example of someone who didn't go around whinging on his way out
and I think Hetfield really admires that about Lemmy, he did after all write a song about lemmy on their last album. Hetfield's a different kinda dude, much more creative than Lemmy ever was, and people who are creative tend to dwell in their heads... and that causes problems sometimes.

It’s cute how people compare Metallica to bands like the Rolling Stones and other laid back style bands.

It's a clear giveaway that tells you who has never ever done a concert and doesn't know the vast difference in physicality a thrash metal concert has vs a blues rock concert.

And Metallica has toured more than any other thrash metal band ever by a lot, playing their fair share of super long concerts.

Jason Newsted for example had an herniated disc after a very few years playing in Metallica. They're all physically fucked up.

Yes, I find it hard to believe this was a spontaneous act. It’s a show. People are assuming a lot or are reading too much into this.

People still listen to Metallica. i haven't listened to them since 1990 maybe 1991.

Bout when I quit.
I got into them during AJFA, quickly went backwards thru their catalog. Learned everything I could.
It was the time where I really hunkered down and learned everything I could on guitar. Metallica was a big part of that.
Iron Maiden, Ozzy, GnR, ACDC, Megadeth, Black Sabbath...
The day I brought the BLACK cassette home, sat down with my Charvette and a Peavey Audition 30, ready to learn new riffs...Pumped up!
I encountered "Nothing Else Matters".
I was so deflated. Let down. Confused.
Went back to practicing Rust In Peace.
The day I brought the LOAD cd home, I fell asleep listening to it.
Metallica have been nothing but a casual concert for me since.
Anthrax and Megadeth, on the other hand, have put out some fantastic stuff in the past decade.

Never ever done a concert? Hopefully that was a typo? I’m pretty sure most the guys on here have “done” a concert or two, or many more. I still have neck and back problems from the shit I did. Guess what…. I quit.
I don’t think the Rolling Stones comparison had anything to do with the type of music being played and the physical nature of headbanging and thrashing on stage.
Keith Richards has outdrank and outdrugged most everyone on this earth and still goes on about his business.
James needs to work it out or hang it up. There is no in between.

Please include Testament. They are the only band that got better and better with tima and age. They are so underated. They should be Metallica!!!!

Nah dude you must not understand. James Hetfield both singing and playing fast tempo, palm muted thrash chugging at almost 60 years old is totally the same as Keith Richards standing around, lazily strumming big wide open cowboy chords. Totally the same thing. Obviously James is just being a baby for daring to show some concern about being able to keep up the pace of what he's doing forever. And while Keith Richards is basically doing the exact same thing as Hetfield, obviously, the fact that KEITH hasn't complained means Hetfield is just a baby and should shut up because he's been successful. Or something.

This whole thread is funny. No matter on which side of the river your camp is, you definitely cannot deny one thing: You are here talking about them. Like "there's no bad publicity".

Fuckin wannabe macho wankers in here.
No wonder why male suicide is what it is. I’m sure you’re all amazing Dads with attitudes like this.

I played lots of concerts in the 90's. Mostly opening. Lots of people here on Rig Talk have done the same. Road life certainly isn't for everyone. I quit doing it about twenty years ago.

As for the Stones and Metallica I have seen both bands more than a dozen times. No one in Metallica is as physical as Mick Jagger. Not even close.

He is. Like I said before, if he got up there and said “wow, I been feeling a little old lately, then I remembered I am old!! LOL!! Can’t believe we’ve been out here for 40+ years, and that’s thanks to you crazy fuckers!! (Big applause) seriously though, we are getting old and sometime we question if we can still do it, but as long as you fans, THE BEST fans in the world show up to see us, we are gonna kick your ass!!” Would have been totally cool, he could have talked about his problems while thanking the fans and still being “hetfield”, instead it sounded like a sob story about himself, and coming from the frontman of one of the biggest bands in the world who could have walked off that stage right there to a life of luxury and praise few have ever achieved, it sounds like being a baby to me

I hear you but I don't see it the same way. He didn't blubber, his speech didn't even waver. He didn't throw a big a-bloo-bloo'ing tantrum like some people here would have you believe. Watching the video, he opens up with "Gotta say, I felt like shit before coming out here, feeling negative, telling myself I'm an old fart and all that bullshit, but these dudes stepped up and helped me *band hugs* and I'm here to tell you that I'm not alone, and neither are you." The whole thing only lasted almost exactly a minute, no more than that.

So while he didn't make a joke of the moment and end with "but I'm gonna kick your ass anyway," he did end with something positive and upbeat, and he definitely didn't act like some woe-is-me buffoon crying about how life isn't fair. Far from it.

On one hand, no the audience is not your therapist, but on the other, if it's just a brief few thoughts and not a sermon, and it generally ends positively, and more importantly, it shows people who look up to the band that 1. nobody is a superhero, and 2. you don't have to hide the fact that you're not, then I view that as a net positive, and absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, especially if it's only happened once, close to the relative end of your entire-industry-leading 40 year career.

Well that’s the most coherent comment that anyone on the “other” side of this has made. Kudos.
I don’t agree, but…..see, we can disagree without the name calling, which has only come from one side in this thread.

I'm all for people getting the mental help they need. However, I'm sure most fans go to rock concerts to a) be entertained by the music, the staging, the sheer spectacle of it and b) to forget about their own troubles for 2 hours. How can one indulge in a little bit of escapism when the performer unloads their own issues upon the fans? Taking care of that stuff offstage and in private is part and parcel of being a professional. I'm not there to relate to the "star". I'm not their friend, but merely a nameless fan. If I did want to know those things, I'd seek out interviews or re-watch Some Kind of Monster in my own leisure time, not during an event I likely paid top dollar to attend. You think this crowd is tough on him? Imagine the reaction if an all star athlete or Broadway actor did this. Sheesh!
