I have mixed feelings about Pantera. One second, I think they're pretty cool, but the next, I think they try too hard to be teh brewtals.
I agree, its mainly Phil that gives that vibe off.

Phil is a fucking idiot. Doesn't change much though, just ignore his strung out ass.

The Cowboys From Hell album is one of my alltime favorites. Both the intros to Cowboys From Hell and Cemetery Gates send chills up my spine every time I hear them. Dimebag's tone definitely fits the music too, even if I'd never dial in something like that myself. Great band.

I too have always been a fan of Dime's tone. It sounds crushing and not too fizzy. Although there is a bit of that there.

Dude I can't believe you've never listened to Pantera. Dime's songwriting and soloing is the best EVAH for metal! Every single one of their album kicks butt, and they all have their own thing going on while still sounding like Pantera albums. Hands down THE most influentual metal to come out since Priest or maybe Metallica IMO.

I'm a little unusual when it comes to music I guess. I'm a listener (as opposed to a constant critic) through and through, but I've never really gone out of my way to find cool stuff and even when I hear really cool tunes, I somehow never make it to the store to buy the albums. I missed AIC the same way, and only stumbled across their greatness when Layne died.

O.K., it's time to crank some METAL!

Oh, and I think Dime's tone fits the music perfectly. Heck, I'm wondering if I shouldn't get me a SS amp for some additional guitar tone possibilities.

Grab a Randall RG100, a Furman PQ-3 and a hot pickup! That should get you there!!

you can pick those up for hardly anything now. something like 300-400 dollars or something silly.

I got an RG100ES in average condition with footswitch, for $350 on ebay in may!

The way to get Dime's tone from those RG's though is to run the Furman PQ-3 infront of the amp boosting 800-1000hz, an MXR 6band EQ in the loop and also i think the Randall Jaguar speakers in his cabs were the other key ingredient to getting the tone nailed!

BTW, he used the RG100 on all the pre Cowboys from Hell stuff and the Cowboys from Hell album, and also on The Great Southern Trendkill. On Vulgar/Far Beyond Driven/Reinventing the Steel, he used the Randall Century 200 heads. If you can find one of those for a decent price, then grab it.. but it seems the prices are going thru the roof!!

Vulgar Display is one of my favorite metal albums - just kicks booty!
Far Beyond Driven takes it to another level. Those are my 2 fav Pantera disks. Cowboys is cool too.

Yeah his tone is gross and super cool at the same time. He is SUCH a great player though. I got to see him 5 times and even got back stage once. Very cool peeps sans Phil, but Phil was a great front man on his good nights. His bad nights he was just kinda a screaming red neck on downers.
