I remember Carl from the original HC forum back in 1998/1999. "HENDRIX DID NOT USE 6550s!" he'd say.

Here's the deal.....the internet has a door on to the street. Anyone can be anything, be 'cut and paste heroes', pretend to know about things they've no right discussing, some people have agendas, some people don't, some people are cool, some are not etc etc. Moderators are people, all the above applies. Most at TGP are perfectly decent people, the owner of the board is a perfectly decent person. In fact some are really cool guys, one in particular I've become good friends with and it's nothing to do the TGP, he just happens to be someone I get on well with.
I've only ever had an issue with one, who pryed too deep in to my business dealings to the point he contacted a Supplier to see if a friend of mine was an employee. He wasn't and the Supplier told the moderator thats not something they can disclose and reported it to me. The rationale was my buddy didn't have a 'disclaimer' in his footer on posts. I reported it to TGP's legal counsel and got an apology.

I've had 3 infractions in 7 years. All 3 I knew I was going to get and it was worth it. Ironically, all 3 were issued by the guy who is my good friend.

They have rules, if you can't operate within them, it';s simple , stay the fuck off there. Live and let live. There;s nothing clever about just bombing a thread in order to get banned. You just make work for someone moderating, who in real life you'd probably have a beer with and talk shop.
I don't agree with some of the rules, but when you are dealing with knuckleheads fighting about all things Dumble all day if there wasn't rules, there would be complete chaos. A different type of chaos you find on here at times.
There's been some pretty dodgy behaviour by Manufacturers in the past on there too and some potential legal situations. Much of the rules are to avoid litigation, a potential REAL problem.

What I don't like at all, is that if *I* disagree with someone and even write logical reason as to why , suddenly I'm seeing responses telling me I shouldn't do that, it might be bad for business or someone threatening not to buy an amp from my company because I dared to tell them they were talking out of their arse. Well don't fucking buy one then....if someone is that sensitive, then I'd rather not deal with them and put the Dealers through hell.
Seems different on here, people are not as senstive. I like that because it allows me to be myself and not have to re-read everything 5 times.
All that said, 90% of people on there are guitar players at many levels (just like here) and just enjoy the comradry (just like here). THere;s nothing wrong with that. You simply choose what you want to participate in and what you don't.

I seem to remember Carl buying an amp from me years ago. I'd heard the rumours he was a handful ;) , NOT AT ALL. A total pleasure to deal with.
When it comes to the internet, don't beileve anything you hear and only half of what you see !!

It can be bad for business, just imo. You obviously disagree which is fine.

Builders trolling forums constantly policing comments about their products just doesn't look good to me personally (not saying you specifically just a generally comment). Even if the negative comments aren't "correct" or whatever people usually are smart enough to figure that shit out or just peg them as a hater. Other 3rd party comments tend to balance that out on forums anyway (usually).

TGP sucks because they want the forum to look like a fantasy world where everybody loves every piece of gear and omg a negative comment might hurt the business must protect and censor! Fuck that it's unrealistic and not truly helpful to potential buyers it's like reading advertising. That's what advertising is, one sided positive spin.

If a business can't handle negative comments or people not liking their stuff on forums without a gang of fanboi's or the builders themselves getting up in arms over it, they shouldn't be in business imo. Let the products stand on their own!

I was always thought Reinhold Bogner was smart not to post on forums for example. People LIGHT HIS SHIT UP on forums from time to time, totally trashing his stuff on occasion. You'll never see him sign up and post to counter it. It stands on it's own.

Some builders prefer the opposite approach and post alot on forums for their group of fans and to drum up business, I can respect that.

But I can definitely see the advantages for those who choose to minimize or not take part in the "white noise" of online gear forums as well.

It would seem easy enough for a builder to enjoy being a regular forum member by posting and enjoying things under a different user name.

Peace

Ive been using musician's forums since they were invented, and never got an infraction until TGP. Big_Mike really needs to get his fat butt off of the computer and outside. Maybe if he lost a few pounds he wouldnt be such a cranky bully.

Hey, I like my Carvins too, but it ain't running thru no fuckin tweed!
I wasn't allowed to join leftyfrets because of my handle 'BigfnMonster", because "we don't talk that way (fn) here".
Well, I'm lefty and guitars are limited for us....
So hows this, suck my fn left nut, or my 300lb ass could crush the left side of your fn skull with my left fn hook!!
Sore spot with me.

I wish I could have this conversation over a pint......not on a forum.

Yeah I get what you are saying, and I agree with many of your points, but here's some other thoughts to add to the mix:

OK....so as Alan Phillips (not CA) I'm a working guitar player, I play in real band that actually plays decent club gigs 2 to 4 times a week. I even get to regularly jam with some well known players, but I don't have mass of amps and cabs lined up in my 'music room' and just take pictures of them. So can I not post in forums as a guitar player and enjoy discussions just because my day job involves building amplifiers ? Do I not have something useful to add to discussions or is everyone suspicious I'm on a permanent spam fest ?
I post in the CA thread on TGP not to spam but to answer questions directly and interact with owners....something very few builders do online as you pointed out. It doesn't work for everyone and I get that.

Many seem to manage to get banned in a blaze of glory because someone says something negative about their products. Yeah it hurts when someone pisses on your parade, but it's life.
There's certain things you don't touch and you never argue with a negative opinion of your work unless you can clearly see the user is doing something fundamentally wrong. THen you position to be helpful and not argumentative.

Interaction on line is just an extension of customer service as far as I'm concerned. I would say any CA owner that has interacted with me would agree.

Product news goes in the correct sections of the various forums, FB and our website as well as the Dealers websites.

You are interacting on this thread, did you see any spam from me ?

Trust me, after hours I don't particularly want to talk about CA, or explain differences between models etc etc, but I do like interacting with all you guys as players.

All forums have people with agendas, it's not usually the site owners, it's a handful of contributors. Do you think this site is any different ? People follow each other like Lemmings to buy a string of amplifiers they own for 2 weeks before buying the next best thing, which is the same as last weeks, but with 3 component changes......People put deposits down for amps that don't even exist ? If that's not a product of 100% hype, I don't know what is.......

So it's each to their own. At the end of the day, you buy what inspires you and the risks you take are your own choice.

I speak my mind, it is what it is, I'm an opinionated passionate person. No apologies for that. . I'm not going to remain mute just because I own an amp business, but equally I'm not going to put tacky adverts for my business in every post I make either.

Cheers, Al.

I've tried that. but it doesn't take long for people to put 2 and 2 together. It's hard not to post technical info that leads peopleto who you are. I actually got banned from a guitar site for doing just that. I wanted to talk guitars, not fucking amps for heavens sake.......Trust me, sometimes I would love it if I could get away with it. I just can't.

You can take my word for it Joe ... Al makes very nice amps. I have played on a few. Very worth checking out.

I post on TGP ... But I usually only communicate with the same group of people often & I communicate with all of them in other places. sfryette, David Torn, Stu Blue and few other people.... It is too dry over there most of the time for me.

It is the only place I have ever got a warning & that was for referencing Acts from the New Testament / The man I was named after ..... See my signature here it is the same one I got the warning about minus one word. Funny thing is it was my signature there almost two years before I got the warning.....

The Small Company Luthiers is the only subforum I go to over there. There's a few guys in there that I talk with. I seriously doubt anything related to an amp on The Goober Page would I find interesting, helpful or enlightening.

Honestly, what I've been doing for the last little bit is just adding guys I enjoy talking to on various forums to my Facebook. No mods, no drama, no BS, etc...

ive said plenty of dumb things, but ive never had any problems here. had some trouble once for typing a post in all caps, intending to look childish, you know, humor. ONE post

For me it is usually vintage English - Marshall, Hiwatt, Orange, etc or Fryette amps.... with people I have known for years.

To be honest Steve I am kind of surprised you never played on a Deliverance ?

Haven't owned anything from VHT/Fryette, other than a power amp. But, there is an explosive Deliverance preset on the Axe FX. Sounds great too, but not sure how accurate it is since I haven't had the real thing.

Check out the Granger thread over there. Once again, as if on cue, Fat Ass Mike rolls into the thread cheerleading Germino, Metro, etc.
Guy was looking for VH gain levels, something that no Germino or Metro has, IMO, but Sloth Mike doesn't read that part. He doesn't post his opinion and move on either. He posts multiple times as if repeating the same BS will convince someone to chose his prefered brands. Then he capps it with, "I roll my own".....meaning he builds his own amps. How he solders with those sausages I don't know.

Just jumping in with a quick question...

Isn't the deliverance kinda cheap now? Like in the 800-1000 price point? I seem to recall a few up used lately.

I also have not played a proper VHT amp. They just have not gotten a stronghold in the southeast.
