Every time I play this thing, I am more impressed.

It is so deep and great sounding that it has completely shifted the way I look at tone.

In fact, I am selling my cabs. I am now an Axe Fx, powered monitor guy. :rawk:

Incredible piece of gear

how does it work througha poweramp and a cab. Ive been under the impression the tone/feel is really from the cab modeling in the thing.

Lets hear some direct recorded medium to hi gain clips that are convincing. I really want to own something like this and sell all my tube heads but I'm not there yet.

Sorry, I don't do clips yet, but I do plan to learn how soon. I have never done any recording outside a studio...and that was a number of years ago.

I am certainly not going to try and sell you on this thing, but I do know there are more than a few cork sniffers who are very happy with the mid/low gain stuff.

All I can say is that this thing has completely changed my outlook on modeling.

I'm considering the same monitor(s) as you have for my Axe-Fx and I'm trying to figure out if 1 or 2 would suit my needs. Do you find you need 1 or 2 to produce the same low end thump and feel as a 4x12? Is 1 loud enough to practice with a loud modern metal band?

Thanks,
Frank

How come a Carvin poweramp? Does it sound better though these?

When using the AxeFx it really goes to show you that it's different strokes for different folks on how you use it. I tried the powered monitor thing once. I got a couple JBL EON15 G2's and it sounded like total ass. I currently run the AxeFx through a Carvin TS-100 stereo tube power amp and two Marshall MC212 cabinets. IMO, this is what a guitar rig should sound like. HUGE, grind, crunch, chunk and fantastic cleans all in stereo. The tones I get are just as nice but more diverse than my JVM410 halfstack sitting covered up in the corner. However, for live use I do not use the cab emulation function on the AxeFx but I do use the tube emulation function. The only time I would consider using cab emulation would be for recording direct. I may or may not ever use it though in that situation. It's going to depend on how it sounds compared to a mic'd MC212 cab with a E906 mic. When I get some time I'm try that out.

I have no desire to chance another FRFR setup no matter what the hype on the boards is for whatever speaker. What I have now is "it" for me no question. Plus it's so nice that when setting up new patches I don't have to spend time adding in a cab sim and mic, because in a live situation in which I play most nobody cares. With the guitar coming through a great pair of Marshall cabs and the rest of the band sounding great and "in time" that's all people care about. Well, maybe with the exception of the liquor and the luvin that comes along with it.

This is exactly the beauty of the thing IMHO...there are so many ways you can run it and make it sound great...there is no ONE way to do it

FWIW, The first hour or so I had it connected to the Powered monitor, I hated it...I was trying to make my patches work that I had set up for my power amp and cabs. Adding a cab sim to those patches did nothing for me. I ended up making several patches from scratch and they sound great.

Well the issue I had with the powered monitors I tried out was that even the stock patches on the AxeFx sounded horrible through them. But...now that I think about it maybe those stock patches are setup to run direct into a recording rig. But the thing was is that the stock patches sounded great going through the Marshall cabs and the Carvin. Go figure.

Glad to hear the FRFR is working for you.

+1 on that, I tried the QSC monitor but in the end a power amp and real cab work better for me (cab sims off obviously). Actually, I've been having fun running it 4 cable style with a Dual Rec and Lonestar.

every clip i've heard from this thing sounds good, but doesn't "sound" like it's coming from a tube amp.

the effects sound killer, and teamed up with something like a egnater EG2 loaded with a twin/deluxe module and a COD for low/mid gain stuff, assuming the axe-fx can handle the higher gain stuff well, you would probably have a world class tone in a small rig.

Say, can you guys explain what "FRFR" is? Not familiar with that term. Thanks.

FRFR stands for "full-range, flat-response". Like a recording studio monitor speaker is. In laymans terms it is a speaker that is fairly neutral that can make a good blank canvas for mic and cabinet emulation.

So, does this make me your crack-dealer for the Axe-FX??? ;)

FWIW, I've always thought Eons sounded a bit too high-endy and didn't work well for guitar stuff. Just my opinion though. You might try a GC that'll let you try out some sets with your Axe-FX.

Yeah, I haven't got my Axe-FX yet or ever used the QSC's before, but you shouldn't base your whole opinion on FRFR speakers on the JBL Eons..... they suck. Molded plastic enclosures, loose muddy bass, shrill highs..... not very good powered monitors at all. It's possible you'd love those QSC's... I'm definitely going to try them out when I get my Axe-FX. I'm hoping I like them, but if not I'll be getting a VHT 2/90/2 to run with two guitar cabs.

Hey mctallica1 ? !!

You've been awfully quiet lately. Are you still diggin the AxeFx through the QSC's??

I don't think I have ever been happier with a setup.

Absolutely love it.

In fact, I am on the list for a second Axe as backup
