Right on! Love that album! Chris has such a unique voice in his playing, never get tired of that album! Anytime Chris gets some well deserved recognition it puts a smile on my face, dude is a monster player....Love his gear choices/setups too

I listened to this album for like 2 years straight. I remember hearing that it was all a JMP-1 for the preamp.

pisses me off that dude is relegated to managing a rehearsal studio instead of playing music full time, same with holdsworth who is always struggling to pay the bills.
it's great to see some guys on the forum pay respect to a legend who really deserves it.

Agreed. Poland, Uli, and a few other cats I was influenced by when I started, kinda flew under the radar it seems, and never got the recognition they deserved. I can listen to those guys all day and can't make it thru two vai or satch tunes.
indeed
add george lynch ,warren, zack and all of the other has been hair farmers that this board jocks so heavily

between uli and CP you have the spectrum covered,i would throw greg howe and jeff beck in there too

Jeff Beck for sure. I haven't heard ANYTHING from Uli that makes me interested in hearing more.

Man. Seventies Uli was a decade ahead of the eighties shredders. Some of the solos on virgin killer were ahead of their time. With a fuzz and a plexi no less.
Totally, Uli was way ahead for sure. Besides the straight forward rockers, you've got all the fusion guys out of that decade too, which was the actual scene Chris was part of before his 80's heavy metal days.

I wish Chris got more recognition in the metal world as well (I think he gets more respect with the fusion crowd), but I'm also glad he got his life straightened out and has produced so much great work even if it hasn't led to a lot of money. I think stuff like OHM is where his heart really is, which is never gonna get mainstream love. If he was asked to do a Peace Sells reunion tour that was a pure cash grab, I'd definitely be happy for him getting the paycheck, but musically I think he's way past all that and would hope he would then get back to his own music.

even going back to the megadeth days, theres something in his lead tone ive never been able to figure out. like a halfway backed off tone knob or some kind of filter to get that vowel sound. its always been there.

you're kidding right?
on your way over to talk to CP you need to get familiar ASAP

Reza, spend some more time getting to know Uli, it's definitely worth it even if it's not grabbing you at first glance. Kind of essential 70's guitar playing like Schenker/UFO, Blackmore/Purple&Rainbow, etc.

I think the only 70's guitar playing I have ever cared about was Hendrix/Page/Gilmour.

Will check out some Uli.
That's cool, and if you were only going to pick 3 from that era, can't argue with those either (Page will always be my favorite from that decade)

I've always loved Chris on his "Damn the Machine" album. Such a killer record.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. I wish that they would have made more.

HMMMMMM some diminished licks in that Uli stuff have got me thinking that perhaps Malmsteen is not as innocent as he would leave us to believe! You can totally hear the Ritchie and Uli in a lot of Malmsteen's phrasing.... never really did buy the " my influences are only Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart " etc... I am not a huge Uli fan but he def. could rip it up and has some cool songs. I just find his tone so damn piercing it hurts when he goes up the neck and that ugly abomination of a sky guitar!

Is that Uli playing on Virgin Killers? Shit, that opening tune sounds like Shenker ripping it up. The phrasing and quick blasts.... either way, 3 kick ass lead players in that band. They def. knew how to fill that spot. The playing on Virgin Killers is definitely off the hook for the time and even now. Had never listened to this album and it is fucking great. Awesome sounding drums too.

Im in LA, which rehearsal studio Is Chris a manager of. I want to reach out and ask him myself.

he managed Downtown Rehearsal in L.A. It was an old school building downtown that they made into rehearsal spaces. I met him there once, super cool dude. I'd be surprised if he was still there, that was like 10 years ago.

That's totally Uli, Michael was only on the first album and a partial appearance later on Lovedrive. And yeah, its a major classic album. Scorps were a good 80's band, but they were a killer group in the 70's.

The playing is looser on this stuff than it is on the 80's stuff. A lot of great tunes with Jabs on lead but the 80's stuff seems more basic and cookie cutter as opposed to this stuff which has a wild off the hook feel. I think this is also the difference between 70's and 80's and then into 90's. There is this notion that perfection right down to the hit is more important than the feel of an artist performing. Things became more and more controlled.... today, everything is essentially a sample.

He sounds great in Ohm. Those yamaha's and bogner fish (on earlier albums) and often using a fulltone '69 too. Just a great player and great tone all around :D

Love this album and the work with Mustaine...The System Has Failed, Peace Sells \m/

Well, he is holding a PRS on the cover of this album...

What's wrong with me? I've owned this album for probably 25 years (or however long it's been since it came out) and I somehow never noticed that!

Definitely one of my favorite guitar instrumental cd's, too bad he never did a follow up in the same style.
His song "Chasing the Sun" from the same named album is also great.
