I Miss Real Drums

All my clips are real drums, I just can’t play very well lol

Hearing real drums is the best . Stoner bands have some great real drums tones

I played extremely rudimentary, drums myself, and when I used to record a lot, I found it was always better to keep it as simple as possible, and be solid rather than trying to go beyond my limit and have it be questionable.

Death's Steve Di Giorgio is one of my favorite bassists; and Death has some of my favorite metal drumming.

A friend of mine did a few releases with Derek Roddy on drums years ago.

Not RT material, but I think the Drum Sound on this record is killer. Phil Collins from Genesis behind the kit.. Just Drums in a room with no fuckery..

And of course who can forget Tony Thompson with Power Station. Talk about epic 80’s drums in a room. If I hear any new rock or metal song and it has that typical software snare it’s a hard no on everything for me.
Started watching this thinking I’m going to get tips on working with a real drum and it’s just a perfect statement on why it’s shit now. The whole vid is about layering samples and the end product is just the typical, characterless huge thud. The comments are full of “this sounds awesome” etc etc….well except for mine of course…lol

White Zombie had solid real drum tones back in the mid 90s

To be fair, you wouldn't really know if there was a sample blended in with those real drums but I get what you are saying. I hate the sample game so much that I " de-transitioned " my once acoustic to electronic conversion kit, back to real cymbals for the time being. You just can't rival a real hihat. Snare also as well as the natural decay of a bell on a ride. I just couldn't get the feel I wanted from sampled cymbals. You play so much better on a real kit.

Drums from that era just seem so raw even when processed and the hats! , so crisp. Listen to the hats in sd3 or others when you open and close them..there is a weird phasing thing happening because they are just clamping down a sample with another sample when you tighten them. I just couldn't listen to it anymore. Hate it

The cymbals, especially the hihat, is one of the most annoying and obviously digital sounding parts with samples, for sure

I honestly think that most sampled snare drums are exhausting to listen to nowadays though too

Yes a shot gun sound or that thuddy floor tom snare that everyone loves. I hated grunge and the death of the hair scene back when it⁹ happened but listening to Pearl Jam on the radio the other day, holy crap that snare and that kit sounded so damn good and real to me. They recorded that perfectly

They actually recorded performances back then.. Mics up, outboard Compressors set and recorded right to Tape. Fucked up? Do it again..
No fucking Plugins.. Everything is finger fucked to death in Digital anymore with absolutely no dynamics. Just loud and flat as fuck..
Listen to the Sax Solo in that song. You can actually hear loud and soft phrases.. Do that totay, and some dick will say it needs more Compression.. LOL

Belphegor always lands great drummers, and their newest guy might be their best yet.
