I Miss Real Drums

Nice! Nothing beats the sound of a snare being hit slightly off center or closer to the edge now and again. What was the recording chain for that?

tlm102 overheads, audix D's on the toms and kick, 57 and i5 on the snare, mxl condenser for the room. a little gating, compression and reverb. bell brass snare. lots of tuning

White Zombie had solid real drum tones back in the mid 90s
The 90’s they were definitely layering but more often than not, they were building on a real snare drum and it was the majority of the tone. Some amazing drum sounds from that decade. The 80’s got crazy after ‘84/‘85 with the canyon gated snares and Linn drum machine but the 90’s thanks to the explosion of alternative and Indy music (don’t care for the word grunge) which was rebelling against that, it went back to more natural sounding drums but with subtle layers added for authority on the bigger rock records. RATM is a good example of a great snare accentuated with a few tricks from Andy Wallace, like triggered white noise etc. White Zombie, STP, AIC, Korn and so many more great drum recordings, with some extra sauce but still real drums at heart.
Remember when albums all had uniquely different drum sounds and some were often signature sounds that told you the band before there was a vocal or guitar. Now it’s just super homogenized and so many bands are just indecipherable from one another unless your very familiar with them.

Yes a shot gun sound or that thuddy floor tom snare that everyone loves. I hated grunge and the death of the hair scene back when it⁹ happened but listening to Pearl Jam on the radio the other day, holy crap that snare and that kit sounded so damn good and real to me. They recorded that perfectly

yeah you missed out on a lot great drum sounds not listening to grunge. Brendan O'brien was responsible for pearl jam and practically every other band back then, i find myself A/B'ing with his stuff the most at least for "real" drum sounds.

How DARE you record real drums with reflective surfaces in the room, an average ceiling height, and minimal to no acoustic treatment on the walls! You sir, are doing it all wrong. You need more toontrack in your life. Remember, " snap to grid" is all that matters!

But seriously, sounds great. Love the modest gear.

For sure, in fact a lot of the hair era has shit drums.. not so much early 80's but sort of 85 -90. But thrash drums were still pretty damn authentic. Love listening to Lombardo's drums. Nicko McBrain too. No funny stuff, the sound of the drums in front of them, not a sample library. Damn, all this talk is making me just want to skin up my tama again and ditch the triggers and mesh heads.

He produced an amazing sounding record for Raging Slab. Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert.

I’m jealous. I even live in a house with a basement but I’m so paranoid about either bugging neighbors or attracting thieves I went with Roland drums. I would much rather have an acoustic set but I know my Wife prefers the other…lol. The idea of subjecting anyone to repeated attempts at me trying to get a part right doesn’t fill me with creative ease..😉

lol thank you. Yeah it’s hard to find much in there that’s actually correct, I didn’t even measure out the over heads, I’m mixing in my tiny basically untreated control room, it’s just a disaster

I live in a perfect unique spot on a main road where the car noise drowns out anything I’m going to be playing, I can play as loud as I want till about 9 at night when the traffic calms down. I got the rtom black holes and the low volume cymbals, it’s the best thing going if you want to keep a real kit but be able to play quietly, they just sit on the rim.

My space is the same, large open basement unfinished walls..surprising how good a " bad space" can sound though isn't it?

For any of y’all playing real drums, are there any import drums you like? I’ve had good experience from the Pearl export series but that was 20 plus years ago. Might get myself a set and I know cheaper drums can sound pretty nice with decent heads and proper tuning. But I don’t know Jack squat about hardware.

The worst drums I've ever heard are any modern metal core type band that Liquid Metal likes to repeat om20 times a day.

The band Spiritbox comes to mind......just the biggest "bro" drum sound I've ever heard. The snare sounds like a plastic bucket in the grand canyon

Modern drum sound needs a reinvention soon

Natural drum tones are coming back hard lately on alot of heavy records ( check out 200 stabwounds, the new krisiun, and the new dying fetus not sure if that’s out yet though). If you haven’t heard it yet, you will, it’s making a big comeback.

Stupid prices on those bad boys though..

Lots of deals locally on birch kits. Everyone wants maple shell packs but you could put together a nice Pearl, Tama, or other birch set for probably 500$ ( shells) and get some hardware on the cheap like stands for 40-50$ used as well. Where the costs will rack up, is a good snare ( if it matters, stock snares can do the job) and in the brass. Cymbals have gotten a little ridiculous. But to give an idea, I have a Pearl snare that is worth almost as much as my Tama birch kit that I got used for 600$. Glad I bought my cymbals over 10 years ago

lol " bro drum sound", love it.

We just put out a self recorded, self filmed, self produced video with all real drums. Gotta say, that DW Aluminum Collectors series snare sounds fantastic under a mic! I'm with you guys, love real drums, slightly off time hits, actual real nuances in music
