Id buy one of these. Im sorry folks but I think its a done deal. This is close enough for me. The real deal is on the left and the variplex is on the right.
I think this amp does the VH1 tone and the peacemaker and/or Metro's do the VHII tones pretty well!

Its close enough for me to the original and I think it could be closer with the right guitar, speakers etc etc!!!.

Pete Thorn seems like a very cool dude. Check out his eruption lessons on youtube. He is definitely a full-blown VH nut like some of us. And I have yet to hear a bad clip of a Blankenship or a Friedman mod. Not to mention, Friedman had a hand in both the Budda Superdrives and Naylor amps - some of my favorite amps of all time.

So you have to get the variac as well?

I believe donbarzini's has a master volume instead of the variac.

Sounds good, but there is too much of the original sound mixed in to clearly hear the new guitar. Even if he were to use the reverb side only, that is enought to sway the sound a LOT.

I didn't think about that Dave! That said, The verb spillage on the right track is low enough for an overdub but it will add to the sound most definitely.

I agree 100% about Pete and Dave!! That said, I would not hesitate to send my amp to Dave at all.

The Variplex comes with or without the variac. You could always use your own.

I remember when I built my Metro last time - "stock" - it was a great sounding clean amp that was UNHOLY loud before it started getting some of hte good stuff going

Put in a PPIMV, and it was like early VH in a box.

I needed a hotplate to compare the difference, but no matta...it was awesome as it was.

We just finished a 100 watt Metropolis kit from George for a customer of ours. It rips! I think his sound closer to the VH FW vibe.

That clip rocked
I like his Badger demo also. That guy gets   in my book.

i think the variplex has more of a gritty vintage marshall authenticity than the metro and peacemaker.

i do prefer the peacemaker's overall sound though...there is something so clear about the mojave:

i love how the tone sorta blooms in a dynamic way, and is more of a modern slant on the plexi vibe.

but the variplex definitely sounds more like older plexi marshalls i've messed with.

i love rockstah and ralle's clips too--both those guys seem to have more gain in their tone

I think that's what also separates the VH1 tone from the VHII tone. The VH1 tone was gritty as hell and kind of scratchy and cold to my ears. The VHII tone had more warmth to it and wasn't as fuzzed out IMHO.
I think between the variplex,Peacemaker and the Metros, you can get pretty close to whatever Marshall/EVH type of tone you want. There are Lots of options that we have these days that we did not have years ago.

A little scoopy too, IMO. I've always thought of the VH1 sound as being designed for instant wow factor. The VHII and FW sounds are much more timeless.

I think that is a great analogy.

i like the VHII tone but i think VHI and FW were better for their overall album mix/mastering, so those tones sound bigger to me in general...listen to the bass sound on VHII...very shallow...sorta like that whole album was produced more for AM radio in mind.

women and children was kinda in the middle of the road

1984 had a safer vibe...warm and big, but songs were less edgy.

let's not discuss diver down, the red headed stepchild of the golden years. :D

Lotta filler on Diver Down, but "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" was cool, and "Pretty Woman" is bad ass.
