Is Mark modding Marshalls?

I think we are steering off track here...all I need to know is if Mark is still modding amps or not. Does anybody know?

Mark will be more than willing to take your money, and you might not see your amp ever again.

Sure you want to risk that?

Looking at acquiring a late 70's Marshall Super Lead and would like to have Mark mod it...is he still modding...and if so, is he modding Marshalls any more?

Why wonder if Mark is modding amps? Get your money out, check out the classifieds here on RT or check on eBay. There's always a modded Marshall or two around. Buy one and get on with it.

Why wonder, and not just buy from RT or ebay? Because I would like to have Mark mod it to my specs, not someone else's. I'm looking for something other than the usual Cameron mod.

WHY WONDER? GET WHAT YOU WANT, WHEN, WHERE AND HOW YOU WANT IT AND NO FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!

Well, to get what I want, I need to know if Mark is still actively modding amps. If he is, then I can describe the mods I want done to the amp. Then I can get what I want, and how I want it...without said bullshit.

When I'm grabbing lunch today I'll ask around for you.

If that's what's been going down, then no.

If your lucky you'll get one of the lovely rush jobs he's been spitting out more recently which pretty much looks like he took a DUMP inside your amp and really doesn't sound all that special. My best advice from my REAL world experience is to find a used one that is done from a different era or play the amp first, i've played a lot of his amps that don't sound all that hot. I wouldn't advise conducting any transactions with Mark, trust me I speak from real world experience.

I used to think that too, that certain era amps of Mark's were "better" but I had seen or heard ones from ten years ago that did not sound as good as some of the new ones or vice versa. The quality varied from day to day or job to job depending on the situation circumstances of the situation of that particular month, year... well you get what I am saying.

I used to think ALL the Schmidt era CCVs were superior but there were ones that were not that great, some that were like OMG and they were all made within a short time frame.

He did a 69 Superbass that was hands down the best Jose mod of his I ever heard and that was in late 2010.

I know that even for Cameron the "rush jobs" from whichever "era" that dont sound as good still sound great compared to any other manufacturers amps. I think that is part of the reason the amps just kind of speak for themselves.

Yea but i don't think it, i know for sure that i've never played a newer mod that mark built that i've liked. I think his amps have gotten brighter and brighter over the years, maybe he's losing his hearing? and knowing what I know about amps now, there is really nothing at all so "mystical" about the majority of his mods or amps. AND honestly, this is my opinion and has nothing to do with the fact that Mark has $1000 dollars of mine that i'll never get back....

If you are friends with Mark and can go over house you are in luck. If not Ebay is your friend. End of discussion.

All great guys listed so far. I'd like to throw Trace @ Voodoo Amps into the mix. I have a 1959SLP with his HG-Jose mod - NICE!

+1

I have a Voodoo amp with the Jose mod like Mick Mars' amp as used on the Dr. Feelgood album. Unbelievably great tone and worth every penny.

Trace is a really nice guy too. He deserves a lot of credit - he has done his homework.

Before giving any money to Mark read and reread the other posts on this forum. Almost no one has a good story to report. If Dave/Rob/Brad couldn't keep Mark in line do you really feel you can do better?

As others have suggested buy used if you must have a Cameron modded amp or have someone else mod one for you.

If you absolutely must throw money away I can send you my paypal account, I accept donations. :D

I am sorry other posters are being such dicks, you have met some of the less helpful members of Rig-Talk.

To answer your question properly I am not sure if anyone really knows what cameron is up to. Many, many folks have claimed to get ripped off by him and so its not the best idea to send him your amp to mod.

As stated in the other posts there are a few quality Amp builders that will give you Cameron's tone and beat his quality of work.

Good Luck in your search.

Most of us have been more than helpful warning him not to even pursue this option and to go with alternative modders or by a Cameron modded Marshall used on this forum or Ebay!!

Yea im not sure I could be any more clear.... I speak from FACT

Did the OP get his question answered?

Short answer - yes.

Longer answer and advice - grab an older used one here on RT. Chances are, someone here knows the history of the amp. IMO, his early Aldrich Mods are still the best hot-rodded, non-clip circuit, modded Marshall's around. Find one from the mid-2000's, still gooped and you will have a winner. Some amps are clearly better than others. Much of it has to do with the components that went into it that were available to him. Those same components aren't available today, and the amps will be different. Like anything else, you have to roll a few to find a "good one".

I would never ever defend Mark for his past mistakes. He's a tough pill to swallow and I feel for any guys that got caught in his swings. There were allot of times the guy produced some killer mods to people who paid him. I never sent my money to Mark so I am not scorned by him. So take what I say with that in mind. If you wronged me I would wish harm on you. So I don't blame anyone. I feel for them. With that I said, I like Mark despite his indiscretions and wrongs. I think the dude is extremely talented. I also think allot of people learned from him. He had his own thing going in the late eighties. Who else can speak up to that? Who great came before him? Jose? Mark carried on Jose. He was his legacy. No?Who else? Allot of builders/modders have learned from him. I couldn't hang with him often because he would frustrate me, but........

People get too caught up in Mark Cameron - the businessman vs. Mark Cameron - the amp guy, when talking amps and mods. And, these are people that have had no dealings with him or no dog in the hunt. It is easy for those people to jump on the hate wagon and they really have no right to. For those that lost money, that's a different story and one best left between the two parties. Regardless of everyone's good or bad dealings with him (mine have all been OK), he can still crank out the baddest-ass Marshall mods around. If I wanted another one (I still have 3 or 4 here), one email and it would be sorted and I wouldn't worry one bit about it being delivered. I am talking about Mark Cameron, specifically, not the Cameron LLC.

Dawk, Dumble, Ken Fischer, Mike Soldano, Lee Jackson, Randall Smith, Bruce Egnater, and I'm sure many others. Mark is not God and he didn't "invent" any of this. Don't forget the companies he worked for in the past where he probably picked up a few things. Taking everything you read on forums as gospel is not a good thing.

If you just want something modded to your specs and not one of Mark's mods, there are a million guys that can help you. Why are you so hung up on having Mark do it if you can just describe the mod and it isn't one of Mark's?

Steve,

A Mark Cameron modded amp would be worth more money on ebay. Maybe he is a collector.
Maybe the customer doesn't know the difference in mods but likes the cameron sound, wants it a little tweaked to his specs.
