...Wait for it... Drum roll...

dunlop gcb-95? lol

Haha! Nah... I went for the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. I bought it a local shop, so I got a chance to try it out before buying it. It's pretty awesome actually.

I was almost sold on the Area 51 but there were 2 small reasons why I didn't go for that one.

1. I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks for delivery
2. It doesn't have an adjustable treadle.

My old VOX's treadle had gotten all floppy. I hated that because if you wanted a step nasal sound in a fixed position, the treadle kept falling all the way down by itself.

So, for a good $200-$260, I want an adjustable treadle.

I am very curious on the Area 51's performance though. So Mark - Suhrfer - Please report back when you get your VOX/Area 51 and let us know what you think of it.

And as far as the Budda goes, I think the deal breaker was the flexibility the Fulltone provides. And I really like having an LED to know it's on without having to play a single note. I like how it has an internal pot to adjust the gain and bottom end response. The outboard adjustable gain is also nice. I think there would've been a bigger chance of me getting the Budda if I had been able to try it first. Unfortunately, nobody around here sells it.

So... I'm off to play my shiny new Wah through my EGNATER REBEL! Yeah, I had to say that to justify this thread in the Eggie forum! :D

Cheers! -Danny

Since this thread got a lot of traffic, I felt obligated to point this out...

Notice any similarities? Better yet, notice any differences?

Don't drink the Kool-Aid...

Well, Ha! They all look the same to me. Specially the Vox and the Budda. I guess there must be some value differences between components. Also, the quality of each individual component should make a difference.

you can see the resistor bands are different.. the circuits may be similar, but the tones are completely different, not even the same inductors.

I think you are missing the point of the post entirely.....

No kidding some of the parts are different... You missed the point. You can take a Crybaby ($80 brand new, much cheaper used) and turn it into a boutique wah. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree though... Just trying to help. Maybe I shouldn't reveal all of the "secrets"...

Also, the circuits aren't "similar". They're dead-on the same.

Fair enough. I'm just not proficient enough to figure this out on my own. I can do it with detailed instructions. But where to start?? Who sells a good kit?? Etc. Etc.

Imagine this: I just spent 3 hours trying to figure out who sells a good mod kit with detailed instructions. Now I need to apply another couple of hours to mod it... Plus the cost of the kit.

Let me do the math... I'm 6-8 hours in, and I still need to pay for the kit.

Hmmm... I just had to turn graphics work down because of lack of time. (I'm a graphic designer) So, on average I charge $35-$45/hr for graphics work x 8hrs. ($280-$360). Hmmm. I'm better off buying the Fulltone! I'll do my expert work in graphics and let someone else do the expert work in electronics.

Don't get me wrong. I do lots of modding and tweaking, but sometimes you just need to draw a line. This could work great for many people though.

Oh no, that makes perfect sense. Trust me, there are plenty of times where I eat a few bucks to save myself the hassle. I just ordered a new Dell computer and printer. I had a 15% off coupon that applied to the printer. In the end it didn't go through and would've saved me about $50. I decided to just say screw it and not try to deal with customer service for the next two hours. If you've ever worked with Dell's customer support, you understand.

Hey, I'm just trying to shed some light on things. If it makes someone take it upon themselves to mod/build their own wah, sweet. If you still see the information presented and want to spend the money on something boutique, no skin off my back.

You're absolutely right. However, years of experience as a PCB designer would make me bet my last dollar that they are the same.

For what it's worth:

I sent my Clyde 847 off to Area51 for the whole package (thanks Kite, I never would have found Dan without this thread). Just got it back and on a quick runthrough and it seems pretty cool... need more time tho.

The best part for me are the outboard controls (pots). In reference to the previous posts, I'm not displeased with the basic tone. I just want to be able to make adjustments to get "my" wah tone.

I got:
- growl control (lets me add or take away dirt - especially usefull when I'm on a high-gain setting already and don't need/want any extra dirt)
- range control (set the sweep - I like it more to the low side)
- quack control (just what it says, from subtle to porno)
+ a new inductor and whatever else he does to the board.

I also got the lefty option, even tho I'm a righty I use my left foot (way convenient!) + an LED. Hopefully this is my last wah!

I'll try to post a clip or two when I can get to it.

Well Gino, All I can say is... Thanks for the addition to this already popular thread. If I ever decide to mod a wah (and there's a 99% chance I will eventually do it) I'll make sure to come back here and take a look

Well if you'd ever like any help or insight into where to find more information, let me know. I've done a lot of research on this and have modded a few. I may be offering my own wah in the not-too-distant future as well. All this talk has actually gotten me interested in expediting that process.
