Bass player was awesome..he actually played real basslines!

GREAT bass player. He tried out for Ozzy. Ozzy turned him away because he was wearing sweats and a baseball hat. Jake loved his playing and got him for his own band.

Didn't get the gig because he wasn't wearing spandex and have pretty hair. Ah, I love the music business.

Ok get past the nasty guitars...way cool. But Ray just kills on vocals. To boot he is making most of the shit up...adding verbs..what the hell!

I love what Jake was trying to do and Ray's voice is awesome but always felt his guitar tone fell way short for this kind of stuff. Just too squished. Had no size to it. Like it's being choked. Great songs though.

Never knew anything about the background to this disc, other than Ray had died (tragic loss...)...gave it another listen based on this thread and still prefer the first two by far :-)

Still sounds bangin' for what it is though.

just listened to Ray's demo with Blue Murder! Pretty cool just about the same vibe with Ray as it is with John.

Just listened too. Great stuff.

SORRY,NECRO BUMP ALERT - HOLY SHIT HOW DID I NEVER HEAR THIS ??? AMAZING !

Need a 4-stage preamp to get that tone. Kevin O'Connor's 4-stage pre in the first edition of 'TUT' (later used as the Rocca HG100) is a great start to nailing this tone.

That tone doesn't sound real gainy to me at all, the guitars have a lot of sparkle and chime in them...sounds like a super lead cranked and playing with the guitar's volume knob, there is probably a dirt box for the solos though...

I was just cranking "dusk" in my car today ... yes jakes tone is awesome and the band is so damn tight on this its awesome. Some of gregs bass work is just amazing

I liked the songs better on the first two "produced" albums as well but the rawness of dusk is still killer. Seems like once Jake stepped away from effects, he stayed away from them. His newer live stuff with Red Dragon is not forgiving at all as he seems not to drench his leads in verb/delay like Lynch used to do. Let's be honest, it hides f-ck ups.

Ray, well, probably my favourite 80's vocalist. Had it all, real shame we don't have more of his work and he left us so quickly. Total natural.

agree totally ... I love the first half of dusk and then get a bit bored with the rest (mainly due to the lyrics kinda sounding "made up" on the spot, which they probably were........they just need a bit of refining to me). But I think it is the best the band has sounded as a tight unit musically

I don't know kapo, have you heard Wicked Alliance or Fine Pink Mist ? Those are some HEAVILY effected guitar tracks, and those came after Dusk...but obviously before Red Dragon Cartel.

I agree about Ray...spot on assessment there. I think it would be cool for either Jake or Lynch to work with Paul Shortino from Rough Cutt and Quiet Riot (yes, he did an album with them). He's not Ray Gillen, but he's got a great, bluesy voice that seems like it would be a natural fit with either of those guys.

I just saw red dragon cartel last night and he tore the play apart. Fucking unreal! He's def still got it. Played through a couple evh 5150s and a charvel.

I am going in about week to see them. Can't wait.

Edit: I didn't know I buy Dusk now for $6.99 on Amazon! Just downloaded and rocking now. It's going to be a good day!

Jake just played in Houston a few weeks ago. My buddies band got to open for them and he got my Jake replica a personalized autographed for me. Guitar is going in a display case. It's playing days are over.

It's not the overall gain that I was thinking about, but rather the crunchiness. In my experience, you need one or more cold-biased preamp stages to get that crunchiness. With just two or three gain stages, it's hard to get gain if you cold-bias a stage (ala 2204). Amps with KOC's 4-stage preamp (e.g., Rocca HG) nail the Dusk tone with the gain dialled back a bit.

You know what else nails the "Dusk" tone? An unmodded Super Lead just like Jake used on "Dusk". ;)

He was using a Kasha Quickmod for a while in the Badlands days with his JCM800 and one with his JMP. Also still using an OD-1 to boost them even more. Wonder if that ended up on Dusk at all? I know that setup was used from '89-'91 as per the rig pics from Young Guitar.
