I'm thinking of making my own cables. Who makes the best bang-for-the-buck cable, and the best 1/4" jacks? I'm looking for something that will do well with longer runs and doesn't get tangled easily.

I've got George-Ls on my pedalboard and they rock, but like many others feel, the cable is too thin for a guitar (and as much as I love the solderless jacks, I don't trust them in a guitar with on-stage antics).

Should I be looking at Mogami? Anyone else?

I use George L's and never had a problem. I use the 225 the heaver of the two gauges.. ;)

Good point. I forgot he offers the thicker cable.

How about the Evidence Audio stuff? I see places to buy pre-made cables, but can I just buy the cable and jacks separate?

I use Canare or Mogami cable, and Switchcraft or Neutrik jacks.

Can't go wrong with Canare or Mogami, but I'm also loving the Redco house brand cable.

Neutrik plugs are pretty nice too.

I'm pretty sure you can buy the evidence audio cable on the spool and make your own. Try Lavacable.
The lyric hg is pretty good but its physically stiff.

+2 i have had good luck with Canare. I also have used Pro-co alot, but their cable tends to tangle

Everyone has their own tastes and likes, and there are plenty of good quality cables to choose from. I personally use to use Monster, then bought one Voodooo 50/50 Cable way back when. I went back and forth between the two a few times, but the first time I plugged in with the Voodoo I noticed more definition and articulation, and a NOTICEABLE amount of it too. I have been running my rig(s) wired with full Voodoo 50/50 including Speaker Cable for about 3 years now and will never use anything else. I even use them for my Rack wiring. It also doesn't tangle either, unless you MAKE it tangle.

Mogami 2524 with Neutrik ends for guitar.
George L's for pedalboard and rack.(I know there are better choices, Had these for years and I have too much in them to just drop 'em.)

IMO, low capacitance cables are the most important factor.

I just use Voodoo Amps' 50/50 cables. I'm sure you could make your own similar cables for much cheaper, but I'm way too lazy.

If you have the right tools, and any soldering talent, sell all of your George L's stuff. The resale value is HUGE on it right now. I don't know why, but I had people falling all over each other when I sold some George L's cables and ends on TGP.net.

The Canare GS-4 and GS-6 with Neutrik ends sounds better than George L's IMO.

bang for the buck =

Redco TGS-HD

$.49/foot
18 AWG
made in the USA
Looks and sounds like Canare GS-6 to my ears

Can't say why, but I picked up a (not too expensive) $40 Monster cable and I think my guitar tone has been sounding much better the last few gigs.

check out Brian @ Colossal Cables.... they're cables are insanely good , and he is a super super cool dude....

Love Evidence HG
George L is great for racks and pedal boards along with high quality/low cap do it yourself cable.
I blew up 2 heads due to Monster cable failing at the ends.

Wow looks like I can get some money back from my George L's then. I recently switched over to Mogami 2524 with Neutrik ends for all my runs, took a good week to solder about 20 cables. Now I have the George L's in a corner.
