Lets talk Marshall's JMP versus SLP ect

Hmm I have both a 2203 and 2204 and I find the 2204 waaaay squishier and the 2203 stays tight pretty much until it’s peeling paint. I put Metro loops in both, best decision ever since I like delay and volume boosts for solos.
Totally agree, my 2203 is much tighter than the four 2204’s my two buddies have, and it hits harder with more authority.
The 2204’s are juicier and sweeter in the mids though. Both equally awesome, just different flavors.
Here’s mine boosted with a Temura mod TS, presence high, mids and treble low for some brootz.

For Back in Black there’s a definite mix of 2203 and 1959 and a jtm 45 .

I agree fr .

Yes!!
Is there any other way?

Well, ok I don’t do it for too long; and, you have to stand off axis so you don’t blow your eardrums.
But, doing that even for just a few minutes is a rush that not even the Wizard or Coliseum I had, can match.
You can get definitely get your pant legs flapping.

I once A/B'ed my 6550 loaded Plexi and GB 4x12 against a friends 150 watt Triple Rec and matching 4x12. It wasn't even close, the Plexi blew the doors off that amp with punch, bite, and volume.

This is 2203 mode on our prototype amp (still in development). No it's not a Marshall, but I assure you it sounds very, very close to the JMP 2203 in the above video:

That is amazing tone. Well done!

I had both a JCM 800 2204 and JMP 2204. Sold the 800. 2204 was warmer and more dynamic.

800 was a bit scooped.

My 2204 seems as tight as my 2203. Maybe a bit sweeter in the mids

I always preferred the ‘70’s JMP2203/4’s to the ‘80’s 800’s. The JMP’s seem to always have more growl and richness to tone

Loved the shit out of the 77 2203 I had. Turns out in this clip, the old 6550’s in it were getting like 3x the voltage they should be. I ended up selling it to a member here after I recapped it and converted to el34’s. Just prefer my Golub modded 2203 from 79.

Dave Friedman said 2203

Why 2203 versus 2204 ? I was leaning toward the 50w but Dave Friedman replied to my e-mail that the 03 is more squishy and the 2204 is tighter

He said the 2203 generally has a low voltage power transformer and apparently the 2204 does not. Anyhow likely more similarities than differences
Something happened here; either you or Dave got it reversed.

It is the 50w models that had the low voltages; as low as 390v. I have one. I have also had 2203s and they all had ‘normal’ voltages (say around 450v) or higher.

Also, the 50w non-MV models of the 70s were low voltage (had those also) and they just kept using the same transformers when they started making the 50w MV models.

My 2204 voltage

I want to love Plexi’s, but I always end up preferring the MV models. If you’re going NMV, a power station is a must IMO so just add in $800 to that option.
Same. I had a Super Leads, Non MVS JMP's, JMP's 2203 & 04, 800's and my favorite of all of them was the JMP 2204 w/ either a DOD 250 or Boss SD1 slamming the front end. Alot of guys back in the day like Matthias Jabs preferred the 2204, just great amps. The NMV's were just to hard to work with during that era, going that route now a Power Station is a must. Frankly of all the old Marshalls I had the only one I would like to have back based on "tone", not talking financially is the JMP 2204.

They did vary a bit; I had a 78 2204 that was super low at 350v. A 79 that was 440v. Now, the 82-83 2203/4s have all been 480+, those were easily the most aggressive MV Marshalls I’ve owned.

Or, grab a good distortion pedal, crank the amp to the sweet spot then hit the pedal and drop the volume knob down to wherever you want it. No tone sucking attenuator needed. Of course, you’ll have that extra gain from the pedal but here on RT we all like heavy gain, so….

This is quality advice if you need to keep your 100 watt beast under control at a gig. No attenuator, less cabling, less stuff to tote, less hassle and less chance for problems=more time for socializing with the patrons and entertainments in general. The tone is not ideal but it is acceptable and on par with an attenuator IME. If you don't have at least one good 4x12 cab with speakers really moving in there you will never get top tone anyways with a big Marshall.

Is that a Euro or Canadian model? And what year? None of the ones I’ve seen (all US models) had all those fuses inside. And they were all 70s or early ‘80s. But that’s interesting so thanks for posting that.
It’s an scandivian model. I think 83
