LTD Viper 1000 preliminary report

BTW @napalmdeath I like a wider nut also but strangely the Viper feels wider than I expected, especially as you get towards the 12th, which I attribute to the thin U shape. In your hunt you might want to check out an SG Supreme as they have a maple cap also and pricing isn't totally insane.
I already have a '61 Reissue Standard, so I'm not aggressively looking. I'm very happy with it!

How's the pickups? I've looked at these several times. I really like the see-through cherry, and the open core Fishmans are great pickups. I never pulled the trigger on one because I like a wider neck at the nut. I'm more at home with a Gibson.. I'd love to maybe pick up an SG Modern. Those are thicker with the mahogany body/maple top - more of an LP vibe.

Beautiful SG

I'm interested in checking one out. I have always liked the SG shape but not the thin body. As for the naysayers:

Out of all the ltd models that is the one I want. I love sg’s though. I had an ec1000ctm and I really liked it. However it just didn’t Les Paul enough for me if that makes sense? Wound up blessing a dude with it and a USA pv falcon custom shop for chump change. Even gave him a wireless unit. He was struggling and I had my use out of them so fuck it. Miss that pv though.

I got everything on order to trick it out the way I want to. Pretty pumped about the project. Really hoping it will deliver the tone I'm after in it's final form cause it will make a great traveling guitar and fit into the overhead on a plane easier than an ES, lol. I love my Edwards ES I just wanted to find something off the beaten path. I'll keep the thread updated. Thinking about making some vids about it, we'll see.

I had never really considered a Yamaha SG, but they are pretty cool and look like there might be some deals to be had. Are all the older ones MIJ? I'm trying to figure out the model numbers too...

From what I gathered when I was shopping guitars the Yamaha SG (or SBG) 1000 series or higher are all Ebony boards. I don't think they are neck thru models until you get to the 1500 series. The 2000 and 3000 series have fancier binding and inlays with neck thru and ebony. I think the 1000 series is set neck. The 900-800-700 are def set neck with rosewood boards. All nice guitars. Huge, thick tone. There is a Kotzen video of him getting some sick tone from a 2000 model. I was close to grabbing one of those instead but wanted Ebony, which was outside my budget, and I already got a nice LP copy that sounds pretty sweet.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I'd want ebony and neck thru. I'm gonna set a search/feed on reverb and start looking!

Yes Mij. Mine is late 70’s-early 80’s…. Very cool and resonant. Heavy and thick….

Yeah Ebony and neck thru would be killer but the set neck models are also sustain machines. Here was the one I was digging linked down below. Has some play wear, looks well loved, but was above my pay grade at 2500. It's top of the line. The mint condition version is listed at 6500 bucks, up from about 5k.....

If you want more clips just look up some live Santana from the late 70's and early 80's. He had a personalized version of it but for the most part it was the same thing far as I can tell. I feel like they have a bit more bite to the top end than a LP.

Some guys list them as Yamaha SG's but others are listed as SBG's so you might have to do a couple different searches to see everything available. Happy shopping brother!

That raspberry pink will change your life (not sure for better or worse tho')

Those pups on the other one would look killer on the viper imo….

I've had a couple of Yamaha "SG" models in the past. Very nice, but usually heavy (for me, at least). Some were made by Matsumoku (Ibanez and pretty much most set neck LP and DC MIJ Guitars of the era) and Kasuga (Navigator). Top shelf stuff for the time, and even now.

I like pink and purple guitars. I can't help it. The raspberry is as beautiful as the violet USA Viper.

The look of a purple super distortion with gold screws in a gold open face cover is hard to beat. Problem was it and the Lollar DB didn't make a very good match in the middle position. Just kind of bland and overly hot. The kid wants to turn it into a coil splitting machine but I never use coil splits. I could leave the DB in the Paul and use the SD at the bridge of the Viper but I kinda wanted to integrate the DB into a gigging axe because that thing is so raw and badass sounding through a cranked Twin. I have a few days to think it over.

@NowYou'rePlayingWithPower did you catch how thick the maple cap is on the USA Viper? Gotta be like an inch thick....

I can do purple, but it would have to be hot pink for me, like this:

I felt like the raspberry Viper was as close as you could get to hot pink and still see the top grain. That thing there looks killer. How to open my canned goods and beers in style!!!! You keep posting this kind of stuff and LTD will release a hot pink Viper or bright pink quilt top that'll damage my wallet. I'm blaming all you metalheads for the pole shift in my guitar interests lately. Flat radius', wild colors, hot pickups. Next thing you know I'll be wearing studded leather belts and MC jackets on stage.
