Marshall 50W Build!

Well this is probably a suitable time to post my abomination of a 2204.. like I mentioned previously, it looks more like the inside of a traynor yba-1 but it is a gutted pro tubes with a PTP with mallories/sozos and F&T caps. classic tone transformer and a few tweaked resistors here or there for a tad more gain and feel. I actually learned a ton from this project. First off I rewired part of the original pcb using jumpers to create a straight up 2204 bypassing all the laney additional gain stages. That taught me how to read schematics. Then I said what the hell, I have this PTP board loaded and sitting around, might as well use it! After trouble shooting and messing around with different gain mods, I put it back to what is essentially stock minus the bright cap. Not sure what it is with this circuit but my 82' 2204 still has the bright cap, this amp needs it cut and I dial the treble way back and have the presence up where I like it. (saw this setting used on a few plexis and tried it much to my surprise I dig it!)Anyway, every amp seems to be a beast onto itself regardless of the values on the board. Drift in components, diff transformers etc.. who knows. I def learned to dial with my ears and not eyes with this one.

Anyway, i'm not going to bother further with this thing or any other future amp build. I've learned to tweak and fix my own amps but also learned to leave the building to the pros! You'll get frustrated along the way but hang in there!

Glad you're making it happen! Have fun, man. I'll be taking notes.

Any progress pics and/or info already? :D

YES! Here are some pics!

Spent Monday nigth working though drilling holes for the transfromers and choke and adjusitng a couple of the holes that were pre-drilled on my chassis i got. Only needed to make an adjustment for the indicator light and impedence switch, other than that everythin fit perfectly.

Hopeing to move on to the electrical stuff Thursday night.

So far so good!

Everything is now fixed on the back pannel, looks great i think!

Alpha pots mounted and old style switches! Front panel to be added last to avoid any damage.

Rear shot!

Very nice!

Thanks, going to be doing a few more hours on Thursday so i'll have more pics then!

Nice. Looks really clean so far. Should sound awesome...and if you want something different, you can just tweak it. I've still got a build I need to tweak more. This looks like fun and makes me want to build more.

Wow that looks really nice......i would love to build my own amps. Any tips on what do l need to know learn?

Very nice & neat !

Wait till he gets to the circuit board! That's when it can all get into spaghetti unless you work patiently and think ahead on how you will route wires (under board? over top? all depends on space). It really is an art to handwire. The one nice thing about circuit boards is that they make everything appear neat. I always thought some of these builders should offer a PCB with optional bypass cap and resistor slots for common mods. That would be super helpful!Anyway the best part of this is, when it is in the headshell, nobody see's it, they can only hear it roar to life.

nice work .
I have a hot tip for you. its not that critical unless you go up into hogh gain but those colored tube cheild and sockets arent conductive. You have to scrape off a little paint if you need them to do their job. FYI.. looks awesome

Got up to no good with my soldering iron last night and completed the turret board!

Here is a crappy iphone picture for now, will get some better ones when i get chance.

It went better than planned, didnt really encounter any problems. I think it's kinda neat (not bad for first attempt i'd say ;) ), although the perfectionist in me is dying due to some un-straight component legs!

I really want my build to look as good as it will (hopefully) sound. Also makes trouble shooting easier if everything is neat and tidy.

Anyway...

Just need to add the insulated buss wire to link it all up and it will be read to mount the chassis in no time.

Thanks for the nice comments so far!

Also appears i can't count as i was short a 1Meg ohm Carbon Film resistor.

Will have to make do with a metal oxide for the moment (notice the odd one out phase inverter grid resistor. The green one in the triad of resistors) , put an order in tonight for a bundle of different values. Will update when they arrive.

1W resistors...

Yes! 1W carbon films through out appart form a couple for 2W metal oxides for the more heavy duty areas like the bias circuit
