How do you feel about the VH140C? Another solid state one i've always wanted to try was the Crate XLP Preamp, which is supposed to be the Gx130C in a preamp form. I'd like to pair it with a Tube power amp to see what it sounds like.
I like the VH140c also. Difference flavor to the 8100.

I have all three of them, I actually don’t like running them into a tube amp, they just kind of get rounded off if that makes any sense and they kind of lose what makes them cool. Just make sure you have a stereo cab to run both power amps for full power and they have plenty enough punch. I’ve still not found and amp that is as brutal as the VH140c

I got an 8100, totally different feel than my jubilee, but it does sound good. I find the 8100 makes me work more for it.

Ironically I mostly use mine for a power amp in a reamp setup. The reverb is after the effects loop, which is a nice bonus.

I had an XLP years ago. Nasssty solid state early 90’s death metal tones for sure. I like to keep around a pre that fits that niche, there’s also the Rocktron Maxe and the Rocktron Pro Gap but IMO the Boss GX-700 slays them all for that kind of tone and they go for like $160 and have actually good cleans too.

I Remember the Boss one from seeing Bolt Thrower back in the day. I think Mick from Slipknot uses it as well but only for 1 effect.

So does the 8100 retain any of “the Marshall sound”? I’ve been a Death fan for ages and have never once thought, “Yep, that sounds like a Marshall”.

They sound a lot like an 800 with a lot more gain. But with the ability to scoop the hell out of it. Once you do that and boost it you get more of the 90s tones they are known for. More normal settings sound very much like a marshall.

Man the 8100 half stack was my first Marshall rig when I was like 16. Loved that amp.
