I have been still looking for that damn UX-1 and I can't find it for shit
I still have my UX1 too ..... that was my initial " studio apt " rig .... the input jacks on it are toast though .... and I never opened it up to fix it ...

my bad ... I had the UX2 ... the bigger one

Ux-2 was gangsta. I still remember my settings for Pod Monkey/Farm. The key was to use the chorus pedal and split the output to 51%, it got thicc. I am on a mission to find it now.

I agree with some of the previous comments. Try some plugins first and see how you gel with it.

If you’re not gigging there isn’t a whole lot of point in investing in a hardware modeller by now.

I can’t agree with this. Being interested in something like an Axe-Fx III and so you “try out” modeling by downloading a few free plugins would be like trying to decide whether you like fillet mignon by eating a McDonald’s cheeseburger. Hey it’s all made of cow, right?

Not all modeling is the same. This isn’t even to mention how much more of a pain it would be to try out plugins with something like a real cab vs a hardware modeler.

I used my UX2 forever .... I still have " the box " too .... lol
if that technology was around was I was 15 .... I'd be at least 10 times better than I am now ... lol

not sure when i ever said a DSL is "as good" as a plexi, what i say is the DSL is a fine versatile marshall that with a good boost hangs just fine with any of my "better" amps which ill stand by, and thats usually after you bash the DSL as some sort of mediocre amp. if you cant sound good through a DSL youre not gonna sound good through a plexi either :dunno:
Meh, you’ve insinuated it on more than one occasion. It’s ok man; DSLs are fine. Lots of pros use them because they DO sound good, and are cheap to replace IF something goes wrong or gets stolen.
It’s like the final 10% or 2% difference in any amp comparison. Some feel that it’s a HUGE difference like me; others don’t.
Horses for courses.

the only thing thats happened on more than one occasion now is you putting words in my mouth. heres the same argument from 6 months ago where i tell you the DSL isnt the greatest amp or gonna smoke some old marshall

I have heard nothing but good things about those dude.
KSR stuff is killer. When I first bought the Ceres I kept trying to figure out where the tubes were in it. I had an Orthos MK2 at the time and still found myself using the Ceres more. When Kyle told me about the Orion I was thinking it was going to be a ceres with a PA50 power section but no its all tube.

He could probably make a killing with a Ceres/tube power section amp kinda like the evh iconic

I wish I could figure all this shit out . 6 knobs on an amp is about all I can handle but I do have an FM9 in the box I've never opened for the year I've had it !!! I had a Helix and thought it sounded like shit compared to my amps and I ended up selling it

I have a pile of amps at home and an Axe-Fx III. I love all of it. They're all great tools. Sometimes my tube amps sound better than the Axe-Fx's models, and sometimes the Axe-Fx's models sound better than my tube amps for the tones I'm trying to achieve, full stop no caveats. And no, I don't really go for experimental esoteric avant-garde noise tones, either. I go for mostly just straightforward, traditional sounding core guitar sounds that anybody would recognize as a guitar. And yeah even then, sometimes the Axe-Fx wins on tone.

It's worth noting that I while don't think I've been able to get the Axe-Fx to sound identical to my tube amps when I can seamlessly A/B them, I will also be the first to tell you that if I put in the effort to really dial the model in, I can get the model and the tube amp to sound close enough that after stopping to look at something else for a second and going back and hitting a chord or something, I can't tell which one I'm playing by sound and feel alone, I have to look at the patch to tell.

I have taken the Ceres and Vesta and replaced the "amps" in my Fractal Audio devices (I still own them all) using the effects loop option on them and I was blown away at the difference of feel AND tone from using those two pedals over the amps.

Even though they sound great with IR's, I still prefer to use them without IR's and going direct into a tube power amp or return of a tube amp (so no need for the cab modeling).

You get that tube amp tone and feel that many people say is missing when you connect a modeler directly to a tube power amp.

grrr_me_scary, Donnie B, ClintN667, do you guys have a preference between the Vesta and the Ceres? I was planning on ordering one. I noticed on the KSR site it says "If you’re more at home on a 6 string, the Vesta may be your preference" and I just play 6 strings in E Standard, D Standard, and Drop C. Anything from 80s metal to melodic death.

I did come across this vid of this guitarist I like who uses the Ceres into his Axe Fx. I always like his tone, but it's also pretty wet and of course there are a lot of additional factors like what IRs he is using.

Buddy of mine bought a Ceres (one of the white ones) but I'm almost convinced there was something wrong with it because it sounded and felt like a cheap 90's distortion pedal, even going thru tube power. He sold it off pretty quickly

I play a varied range of styles/genres and I regularly tune my guitars to E, Drop D, D, and Drop C, so I found that I did like having both pedals to switch between each style/genre and tunings.

I don't feel one pedal is really better than the other.

I had sold my Artemis to fund getting a stereo version of the amp and then I was told by Kyle that he wasn't going to have the time to build one for me since he was being kept busy with manufacturing and putting together the Ceres pedals.

Fortunately, the Ceres was able to replace the initial things I liked about the Artemis and I could run it through my stereo power amp (saved me a LOT of money on that custom stereo build).

You can find my review that I did about the Ceres on this forum (I was initially pretty blown away by it).

However, I did find that I liked the Vesta just a little more when I did get one but probably due to overplaying the Ceres :)

I have noticed that Guitar Center has some used Ceres and Vesta in stock so you could purchase one (or both) and try it/them out to see if you like them, then either keep it, return it, and/or purchase a brand new ones.

Guitar Center just had a 20% off used gear and you could ask them if they would honor the previous sale :)

Disclaimer:

I did get rid of the Ceres, Vesta, and the PA50 once I received my KSR Ares from Kyle since the tone/feel of the Ares was a lot better to me than any of those combinations.

I did compare the power amp of the Ares to the PA50 by using the "return" of the Ares and I felt the power amp of the Ares was better to me plus I had "2" masters to switch between for volume/boost.

Eventually I will find a way to incorporate the Crunch/Lead of the Ares with any preamp that I will use going into the return of the Ares.

The Ares is definitely a killer amp!!

Hey thanks for the response! I've noticed a lot of people dig the Ares (often more than the bigger offerings like the Juno and Orthos). Also, thanks for the Guitar Center suggestion. One other question, does the Vesta have roughly the same amount of gain as the Ceres? Wasn't sure if the "Rhythm" channel on the Vesta for example had significantly less gain. Was hoping to have a very high gain rhythm and liquidy lead. Thanks again!

Try it out, good to scratch the itch.

See you in two years when you've discovered 'it was really convenient and I had fun messing with the sounds, but I just miss the rawness and immediacy of a real amp.' 😉
You should acquaint yourself with the " do you think modelers will get there in the next 10 years" thread from a couple of years ago. You would find some humor in it!

Here you go Mr. Zen enjoy the read..........You must possess Golden Ears..........

I have had great success running my Kemper stage or my QC into a KRS PA50. This thing is loud, punchy and anyone would have a hard time realizing I was using a modeller live. You get all the thump and great tone from a true tube power amp to your cab.

I prefer the Ceres over the Vesta but honestly I didn't spend much time with the vesta
