Meeting Van Halen, and offending Cherone

I consider that dude the single greatest mistake Van Halen made.
Powerful statement. My favorite band, but damn they've had enough blunders for two or three legendary bands.

Personnel-wise, I agree. Worst mistake VH ever made? Sometimes I wonder if it's the building of 5150.

Some legendary music was made there, but long term I think it had a negative impact on both the quality of the music and the quantity.

Ed was a creative genius and he reminds me of George Lucas as someone who produced his best work when he had people around who could be critical and get him out of his comfort zone. The epitome of this was the Van Halen 3 album. Gary seems to get all the blame, but VH3 is widely considered an EVH solo album. I think having a home studio took away a lot of urgency. VH could've released another 3 or 4 albums. Tragic that the GOAT had so many wasted years musically.

Maybe Wolf will go through the tapes one day and release some gems.

Porn music was the worst mistake. But EVH would prob say having that drink and Pall Mall at 12.

I can get behind that. Combined with paranoia over losing creative control and being surrounded by yes men instead of being challenged.

Cherone album is the worst mix and sounding one (worse than OU812 with zero bass) and it was all EVH’s fault. Just listen to the clipping/static in the opening riff on Fire in The Hole.

However I do wish they had done From Afar live. That was the only one I liked off III.

Honestly this video cemented Gary as a legend in my mind

Shit is hysterical
as a former hardcore skater, purposefully careening down a flight of stairs in the fetal position as part of your stage schtick is not normal🧏

….because that crap hurts!

Great to have that experience! Sadly without Roth. GC wanting to sign that album explains why he just was painful to watch in concert when I caught extreme in a small arena . The tour after extreme III . Forgot the album. Was hoping to at least dig nunos playing and tone. His playing was as to be expected but the room was a bass distotion and feedback show ruining shithole. Gary made me decide id never attended any band he fronted live. Realy a pill to watch. Congratulations on meeting the VH bros. What a bucket list experience.
VH never played Hawaii in the glory years, i moved to Cali and missed 1984 tour by one month, then Roth quit. i was left with Hammer pants HagarHalen for a bit, til losing interest for OU/Balance/III.

How Many Say I???? k…

finally Roth reunited, and by then Ed was a desperate hungarian woman begging for cabbage and Dave was Carol Channing on whippits.
Glad VH recovered enough for A Different Kind of Truth before the final bow.

I've listened to that album twice only. When it came out, and then again 5 years ago. It makes me ill.

I just watched this show on YouTube and I must I myself really liked it .

Hagar was the worst mistake Van Halen ever made imo . I never ever thought he fit and can barely listen to him singing . GC a close 2nd .

Fair enough. I was only 10 when 5150 was released and so Sammy was my first introduction to VH. It wasn't until the later 80's I even discovered the early albums, so Roth to me sounded strange.

Now, I can listen to either - but there's not a lot of good Hagar songs in retrospect. I always like the song 5150 though, great vibe and vocal performance on that.

Got it.
I was just saying that the FOH I referred to was after that, so the setup he was referring to was not the same as the show you watched.

Agree that the 5150 II sounds different than the OG ones.
I've had a block letter, a signature original, a 5150 II, 5150 III 50 watt, and a peavey 5150 2x12 combo. Still have the combo & 5150 II (can get it close to the original sound, but like the option for a slightly better clean channel).

Combo is my favorite, but the 5153 is a nice different flavor & fun to play.

So, is the 5150 combo the same as the OG?
I found one in good shape for $600. Though about grabbing it, though I need another amp like I need another hole in my head.

I believe it is a slightly different circuit (reverb as well), but was also factory biased hotter.
Also it is 60 watts, not 120.
Try it & see how you like it

I was a huge fan of the OG, my main amp for many years back in the day as alot of other higher dollar high gainers came and went, it stayed.

However the combo was my favorite, it just had something the OG and the II didn't have as I never liked the II. It also was a beast in terms of weight. That said I used my friends for several gigs back in the day and always had access to his when needed. At one time the second guitarist in my band used one, he just put castors on his lol. Great amp. I'll say this if the OG and the Combo didn't have to be cranked to get the goods, I'd still own the OG and I'd have the combo as well. But I'm not going the attenuator or Power Station route, heck back in the day I used to control the output by my rack effects...So I could crank it at home - all that stuff is long gone.

Why Peavey didn't fix the master volume issue on the 6505 Reissue is beyond me.

😂😂

I’ve only ever bought one VH album and it was 5150. I’m sure you understand why it was also the last. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Cherone sing for VH.
