Sounds like Rick Rubin.....

He likes to compress stuff a lot and tends to Mix/master too loud.

Sean, I'm a club memember and obviously a missionmetallica platinum member too, and I haven't gotten any code to download the 320 version....where is it?

I can hear the stream but I can't download anything.

by the way, the stream doesn't clip.

Really I got the email with my own download code. It sounds sick in my car. I cant stop listening to All Nightmare Long. Real tight now @320 and just brootal IMO and finally has Bass! :D :D

I have had the record for a few weeks now. Het's tone is pretty dry and somewhat undergained/undersaturated when compared to many previous recordings. It's very clear and tight, and the alternate picking and gallops track very well. He also is using more upper mids than I have heard in his tone some time. What I DO NOT hear is any of his signature scooped Mesa sound...or any of the Wizard heads that were used with regularity on Load, Re-Load and Garage Inc.

The majority of his tone sounds like the Diezel VH4 on channel 3 with the gain set around 1:00 to 1:30. I also hear a little bit of sizzle in the high top...probably a Krank, rounding out the reaming 25% or so of his sound.

Just my thoughts.

they didnt use this amps for years. they where just set on front of the stage but backstage james used two vh-4`s.just for warming up in the truck or preroom james had some rectos.

Incorrect...you obviously didn't read my post. I was not even speaking about live performances...But since you brought it up, James does mix some Mesa into his current live sound, but it's primarily VH4 and the Roland for cleans. He NEVER used Wizards live, but has experimented with some of the Krank stuff.

For the curious. Thanks to Monty. Here are pix of his rig at the 2008 Tuscon show. Look close and you can see the back has mesa 2:90's and no more Stratgey 400's. Hope ya dont mind me posting monty ;)

oh and here is puppets from the show. Really dig his tone. Especially listen to the riff he plays alone right after four bars of the intro:

little off topic, is guitar world metalica' special the september or december copy?
in here it's just available the october copy :(

i have the ORIGINAL cd and it just sounds soooooooo bad... i have to through it away. clipping every sec... even bad digital cuts, so you can hear them. it`s so bad, so bad... first i thought it is the worst mastering ever.. but i found this statement from ted jensen

http://www.metallicabb.com/index.php?showtopic=85317

it seems they already recorded it that way.

yeah, ted jensen is also not mentioned in the digpack versions of the CD (at least in mine).

i really like the record songwise, damn i even like more songs on it than on the black album, and i really think this is the best they did in the last 17 years....but the clipping kills the joy of listening.

"...but the clipping kills the joy of listening."

exactly. i want DM without it.. i just cannot understand how this could happen..

hmmm it's a bit unfair for Jason that people are commenting "finally bass" etc etc..... I could hear there bass perfectly in the Black Album, the Loads, Garage Inc..... in all the albums but AJFA.

i heard from someguys that with this coffin-package you receive also a "demo" version of death magnetic, unmixed and unmastered, and that his is acutally way better sounding, without clipping...but hell, i for sure will not spend EUR 100,- on a fucking box...

isn`t that a shame?!

yeah, they should think about it when the "demo" sounds better then the final mastered version.

??? :gethim: not a fanboy???

no, i used to be, but they then started to make music i dont like.

EDIT: which OF COURSE is their good right, they can do whatever they want, but they just didnt do it for me anymore. they finally could have get me back as a "fan", songwise, but they then decieded to rip me off fucking 20,- expensos for a record distorting more than our first demo-tape. :(

i mean: REALLY, i like the songs and i'm more than glad that they are getting "back in form"...and i gave the record already random full-rotations, and everytime i'm getting into it, starting to drift away in the music...it starts to FZZZZSSSTZTZTZTZTZ, and i'm back in reality.

i am still waiting for the box.i hope it wont be so bad sounding

I believe what Ted Jensen said - he's a great mastering engineer and there's just no way he'd do this to an album willingly. The problem is with Rick Rubin, Greg Fidelman and Metallica or else someone at the label. (and I'd have to think that a band with as much clout as Metallica could overrule some A&R puke who wanted to make their comeback album sound like crap) Metallica has a history since St. Anger of thinking that bad production = "raw" or "metal" or whatever, and I think this may be Round 2 of that unfortunately.

All the people claiming it has to be the mastering and that Jensen's lying have no clue - anyone can put a hard limiter on a mix, it's entirely possible that they did it at the end of mixing and then what Jensen received was already slammed like this. Any of a number of software plugins or outboard limiters that any mix engineer would have could do it.

Anyway it sucks, I really like the songs on this album but the shoddy production has just ruined it for me, I can't listen to it for more than a few minutes without getting annoying at how distorted everything is - there's no clarity at all, you can't even tell what's going on with some of the riffs because of it. Total ear fatigue.

http://www.turnmeup.org btw if you want more info on exactly how all this loudness war crap got started, what causes it etc.
