Most underrated Metallica tone

"LOAD' gives me PTSD. My Metallica fan brain went into panic wirh the hair metal innuendo album name, haircuts, cigars, less gainy amp sound, etc. Just shocked my system. With all of that said, one of the things I love about that band is that good or bad, they change. I dig Reload and I've come to appreciate Load as well. I remember the chunk on 2x4 and really liked it.

I have to agree that 5.98 Garage Days was great toneage!!

I remember I was 12 when I first bought Load and I worshipped that god damn album for years. It's funny how, in the context of my current tastes, I'm not a fan of the generic and commercialized vibe of Load. But it has a soft spot in my heart from my youth and because of that I will always love it. Oh and Bleeding Me fucking rules.

Commercial? Like it or hate it nothing sounds like Load/reload. Different for sure.

I still love it . It’s like when Zep did physical graffiti vibes

Mercyful Fate. The attitude in the playing and the tone in that cover is just it for me. It's absolutely perfect for the music. Doesn't hurt that the song is just a constant series of one awesome riff after another for like 11 minutes, either.

Load sounds great too. The guitars through that whole album are absolutely awesome.

Yes, I chose that word intentionally and that is my opinion. But I still think parts of the album are catchy amd enjoyable. And nostalgia makes it a great album for me.

That Mercyful Fate medley is awesome. My dad had a bar in the early/mid 2000’s where the jukebox company controlled what could go in the jukebox. All they would put in for Metallica was Garage Inc. I’d work Friday and Saturday nights for him and I’d take a stack of quarters to the jukebox and drop them in, picking the Mercyful Fate medley every other song. Loved it for the 11 minutes of great riffs it gave each time it played.

Favorite studio tone: rough mix of Breadfan. It's essentially Justice tone without the weird metallic sounding phase artifacts and has a lot more balls. Kind of like a mix of Justice/Black Album tone. You can feel the immense pressure from the palm mutes at 4:14.

Favorite live tone: I was there! I wish the concert sounded this good in person but no chance at 130 db!!! Ever stick your head in a jet engine and live to tell the tale? That's how loud it was lol

The used the Wizard on Hardwired too, was watching the in the studio footage and noticed it on and plugged in for some rhythm tracks.

not me, wizard dryness and that modern processed diezel sound is exactly opposite of what hetfield needs now imo, he needs more raw and angrier tones like he used to, i kind of want to hear him through the old tried and true boosted and scooped 5150
this is all the mesa . 2c++ with triaxis. Wizard is only on reload .he got it during load tour . Diezel appears on st anger

The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited
Just raw and mostly tuned to D Standard.

Only Small Hours and Crash Course were in D standard. Love the tones on that EP. Considering the unproduced nature of it all and Jason saying it was just their live gear at the time in a room and quickly recorded, I would bet James tone is straight raw IIC+

[Jason] "As he recalled, “That was a fucking blast, man. You walked into the room, set up your amp the way you would live, put a microphone in front of it and you play the song. James was standing next to me… just doing his stuff. We recorded it there and then, mistakes and all. To me that’s one of the best-sounding Metallica records, because of its rawness.”

My faves are the Mercyful Fate Medley, Blitzkrieg, Dyers Eve and The Prince

The Wizard was around the St Anger era too, but that album hardly is a showcase for any amp unfortunately.

Yup...Looks like the Wizard, the Mesa Mark and the Diezel. Not a bad set of amps in my opinion,

I actually love the Vh4 tones on st anger . That was last time they had a good tone. Soldano SLO is n Hardwired a lot . They use it during thise making of the song videos.the last 2 albums tones sound like not trying . I seriously thing James missed whst tsor did to his tone

ive not seen it since watching it live, its even worse than i remember. few bands are as laughably bad live as metallica. thankfully one of us brought over the Slayer live VHS we watched afterwards which made us forget about that bullshit real quick
