I'm not Jason, but yeah, the 2nd Degree Blackbelt does hard rock and classic metal VERY well. I don't have Rebel-yell experience so I can't give you a comparison, but I think these 2 pickups might be different flavours of the same sort of thing. The Rebel-yell sounds like a hotter pickup, but let me tell you, for a beefed up PAF, the Blackbelt REALLY screams. It's just got a beautiful wide-open tone that makes rythyms sound great and leads really sing.

I should also add, Jerry Cantrell has 7 of them so yes, they do metal very well. He also has the New Afwayu's - I believe 5. Actually, every guitar has the cept for the SG, which he only uses on one song on the set list live right now...Go see AIC live, They will be back through on another tour in the U.S..

He's using the 2nd Degree Blackbelts and the Afwayu's in every guitar?
Well, The his G&L Rampages are not Alder like the site describes, they are in fact Solid Maple body's with one pickup and he has multiple that look almost identical- You can tell the difference as one has an American flag on the face, and the other does not- @ have Afwayu Bridges, 2 have BlackBelts- Customs have BlackBelts in the Bridge positions (2 with Afwayu's)- Jerry Never uses Neck positions...
I heard you got to hang with the guys, lucky Bastard :D Awesome man and I can't wait for my new toy to arrive

Dude put me and 2 friends center stage 4th row at Commerica park- Sold out show I might add...Kid Cock and Cypris Hill also-Shit, the VIP section upstairs had Hamburgers, hotdogs, anything you wanted to eat, Free Beer ( I was on that like white on rice).. The Night befor Skinner played....I still can't believe how good Williams voice is. The new stuff is some heavy heavy shit!! Jason, go see them man!! Jerry's got god tone live man!! They are comming back in Detroit to play St. Andrews- That will be sold out in 2 minutes....

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna definitely get some MC's for my next guitar. They sound great in the shootout clips!

Love Alice in Chains and I know he is always changing pickups around. He was also playing Dean Solteros for a while. I thought some of his LPs were stock????? Like his white Custom?

I can't go see them this time around, tickets are too expensive but I saw Cantrel about 6 years ago with his band and he had the current singer out with him and they played 10 AIC songs, sounded unreal! I still hold the time I say them with Staley in Philly back around 1994 close to my heart. :)

Anyone know the run down of the amps, cabs and speakers he is using in the studio and recording these days? The new tune sounds killer!

Wade, ma man... what is the "New" Afwayu and how is it different from the old Afwayu? Is it in the mids?

And can you please explain the differences between the A2,A3,A5 blackbelts? The A5 blackbelts are UNREAL in the Lowel ( :worship: ), but I can't help but wonder about these new ones you've cooked up, ya know? Which one of these would rip it up real nice in a solid walnut super-strat body?

Folks, making pickups is sexy as hell when you get to hang with all the cats that Wade does

????????????Inquirirng minds want to know!!!!

So what is the choice for the utmost in versatility with the Egnater amps if you have one LP? Right now I have a Guitar Force Rebel Fire in the bridge, 9.8k hot PAF.

I jsut was something that covers a ton of ground and is ballsy classic rock to metal. I think you should get more of the balls from the amp so I don't use really high output pickups if I can avoid it!

I might try the Bliss bucker, 2nd Degree or Rebel Yell.

Nick, I still disagree bro that a 9-10k 42 gauge wire pickup can not have balls. ;)

I don’t know if the set I just got are the new Afwayu’s or the old but they are the finest pickups I’ve had in any of my guitars. Absolutely love them!

Now the issue is, do I get a second pair for my other Strat or try the 2nd Degree Blackbelts for some different tone options? Do the Blackbelts split as well as the Awayfus?

Marco, is the Afwayu’s in a Les Paul? LPs are different beats and don't need pickups that are too hot in my ecperience. They already have enough natural power and balls! ;)

No, it's a dual humbucker Strat.

I want to try a Bareknuckle Rebel Yell! Seems like it might be a very versatile LP set!

Dude...that's my favorite Passive set of pickups for a Les Paul or PRS style of guitar. That's what's loaded in my Warmoth PRS style guitar...and they just KILL.

Definitely one of my favorite pickups out there.

I talked to a few guys who had these in their LPs but took them out because they thought they were too thick for an LP. I doubt I'd have that issue because I thought the Torque was great in my LP and that was thick.

Well...I personally don't think that's the case. I think they sound great in both a LP (which I had them in a Heritage LP)...and a Warmoth VIP (PRS Style) guitar. Sound amazing in both.

Eric

Cool Eric, they sound to be very versatile which is what I want in my ONE LP!. A do it all LP, Haha. I will also look at the MCP Blister Bucker since it appears to be in the same vein as the Rebel Yell. How much are they for us in the US?

I have been using hot PAFs like 9-10k for a long time but since I like a lot of heavier tones it is about time I bumped my LP up to the 14k range. I know my LP wipped with the Torque.

Wade, which of your pickups is Jerry Cantrell using in his main LPs? How about his main G&Ls? Sounds like he mostly uses 2nd Degree BBs and Afwayus.

I need to find a module to get that tone Jerry is getting on that single they have playing on the opening page of the AIC page! Love it!

** Jerry Cantrell has Second Degree's in the Lp's- 1 has an Afwayu also- The Signature series Rampages have Afwayu's mostly- 1 has a Blackbelt i'm sure for a different flavor ...

Well, the "New Afwayu" is basically alot of research and listening to you guys, getting feedback and always trying to evolve with what the players want. Pete Thorn helped out alot- Reeves Gabrels helped out also alot with great input and great communication along with alot of players in the Detroit area - The new site will feature these guys and some clips : ) Tonally, its a bit hotter ( same DC resistance) and a touch tighter in the low registers- The mids want to explode- Not far off from the original version- A slight tweek can make a really nice grin : )

Black Belt differences:
This whole series is based on the magnet type and the actual wind in the coil winding it with the magnet in mind, not just simply sliding magnets in and out
A 2 version being the exact paf material content throughout wound with an A2 in mind- This model also uses the original Sand cast mold Gibson used from the exact same company that supplied them that poured my batch- Its a fingerprint- These are also the short A2 not the long industry standard 63.5mm- These are also wound with two differing spools of wire (same size, but ever so off from one another) to further the assemetric clipping being off only by a small fraction, but still contributing to the overall outcome- This is how it was made.
The Second Degree is aalso using material to further everything- two different screw material going on here- They look identical as they were made from the same manifacture but are completely different material shaping the tone- Just one of many things that shape this one- Yes, it does matter if you are left handed or right handed with this one also....
I'll finish up later or this weekend...Believe me, its comming!!

Wish you had the Second Degree BB when I was in the market for my Rebel Yells...I think that could have been another killer one to try!!! I agree on the changes to the Afwayus. I always felt it needed a bit more mid-range bite...and a little tighter low end. Otherwise, they are great pickups. You, Tim, and John Suhr are BY FAR the best winders in the biz. That, and you know my fondness for EMGs ;). hehehehehe. But other than EMG's...I only would buy one of your, BKP, Suhrs pickups.

Eric

Sounds like me, i love 9-10K pickups in the bridge of an LP - does it all!

Eric, I think the Rebell Yell would be quite different from the 2nd Deg. BB, no? I mean that is a hot PAF - 9.6 or so and your is more modern? 14k? Just asking. :)
