Thanks Pat for that detailed reply. Really to me, I'm trying to decide if this vibe is close enough. It seems pretty close to me, dare I say close enough for my uses. The liquidy lead is there with my OCD pedal barely on, or even my SD-1. I just never got the rhythms this ballsy without a pedal before.

I have no way to do the W/D set-up. Ralle, Rockstah, and even good old VHoholic didn't have to rely on that. I have a small, soundproofed walk-in closet that my cab is miked up in. There is no room for another cab. It's a luxury most people don't have to have a soundproof area to separate their control room from their loud amp, and I have that. It has to be enough.

As for the Neve mic pre...... well let's just say I have something that's supposed to be even closer. I have a single channel of vintage API mic preamp. This is supposed to be the exact mic pre that was in the board for the early VH records. It is supposed to be the preamp that was in the board that EVH bought for his 5150 studio when they first opened it. I bought it from Brent Averill and he was the guy who serviced that old board for Eddie.

I think I am going to try some old greenbacks in that cab and see what happens.

i'm with you bro bro! that tone is awesome period. doens't have to be vh dna tone. old greenbacks are cool, as are PEACEMAKERS:rock:

Hey Curt,

I think it sounds really close to the original tone, maybe alittle harsher. You probably need a nice old tape machine to record on. :) I'm just not a fan of that tone, EVH's tone never did anything for me....too brittle.

Nice job playing with that little gain :)

Hope your holidays are going well!

Sounds great. Being critical, the sound needs more "grind". It is too clear, tight and focused... ;)

Well Dave you know what I'm working with here. Where does that extra grind come from with a Plexi type amp?

First of all, I really like that tone.

As far as a VH II album comparison, I'd say too midrangey. Needs a bit more highs and more low end thump. A bit hollow sounding to me. Doesn't have the fire and sustain of the original tone to my ears either and I'd say you need to add some echoplex style delay (maybe from a Replex) to add dimension to the sound. The verb doesn't add as much to the VHII sound as the echo/delay...

I hope that didn't sound too critical - I like the sound, but I think to get the album sound you need to produce closer. There are a lot of little things you can do...

Heres how I simulate wet dry when recording. Really easy. I mic two speakers of my amp and send them to two channels of my great river pre. I them add my Replex as an insert on one channel of the mic pre, set for the right style echo. Voila - wet/dry!

OK, I just tried to add a little more fire, sustain and grind. I turned the Treble Volume (aka the gain knob) up to 10 from 8.

Does this help? It certainly makes it even easier to solo on.

Personally, I think that was 1,000,000% better! Holy shit - well done... Ya know, Vic says that the level of the volumes affect the EQ of the amp as well, so it makes sense that adding more volume cleaned up the hollowness of the first clip as well... A little echo on the right and you'd be there...

Thanks Steve. I really value your ear. I'm just looking more for the core tone. The verb and echos I'll use will be different. I really didn't like those silver special preamp tubes that I put in there. They were so fizzy and buzzy. I was ready to ebay the thing with those in there. As you well know this clip was recorded stupid loud in order to get this tone. I am really interested to hear what you can get with your mods. However, I'm afraid that all your MKIV playing and the bad influence of all these east coast gain junkies has ruined you forever. Don't you want to fight with your amp?

Guys,
Thanks for taking the time to listen and check my clip out. I appreciate it.

Geo,
Thanks man! I know how much you love unmodded Marshall type tones   Holidays are going pretty well so far. I hope the same for you. Sorry i couldn't help you out with that guitar the other day. I was thinking you needed a Rhoads which I had but not the KIng V. Anytime I can help you bring the business in your door, let me know.

It sounds great. Can you post the backing track?

Thanks Ben. That's not a backing track. That's a straight MP3 rip from the Van Halen II cd with the left side turned off and me recording onto the left side in Sonar.

that sounded great too me bro! I would love to plug into that sucker....is that a 100w head??? master volume?

Thanks Ant! 100w head turned all the way up. Master volume? Hell no. Hot Plate at -8db so you know how stupid loud that is.

Good to hear Curt, ours is going well so far too. I did find one and the guy is happy. Thanks for the help. I'll return the favor anytime. We'll have to hook up when the holidays are over.

I'll check out your revised clip in a bit...gotta learn some tunes for tomorrow.... :)

Oh and hey, that's the EVH pickup I got from you. Thanks man!

Metal!!

the only thing that I can add to what has already been said is that the amp seems to be missing some hangtime / sustain. It seems as if its about to choke the notes on you unless my hearing is screwed lol :D

Even on the second clip? I hear that on the first one, but not the second one...
