The amp in the video with Mark Day that everybody seems to like has JJ power tubes. The winged c tubes are outrageous in price and the quality is not as good as it use to be. But then again all tubes suck. Its just a matter of how much you want to pay for bad tubes.

  That's funny!

Ruby BHT is a great tube. It can handle high plate voltages and sounds great. On par with the SED's.

I believe it, but I'll tell you for sure that the amp in the video sounds better with the C's. By quite a bit, to my ears.

Hey Brad ,

Due to the price of the S.E.D . Winged C EL34's skyrocketing over the past few months will this still be the tube of choice used in the CCV's , as I believe that was Mark's power tube of choice ??? or will you be using something else due to the price these tubes are now ?

Thanks :)

We are still sourcing but I think we will be going with JJ's as I can get them reliably and they sound good.

say it aint so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Valve Art are better than JJ's I can get killer prices on valve art. Get rubys,,,,, anything but JJ for the CCV.

FWIW, my 20th Anniv. Ecstasy came with JJ EL34s (not E34Ls) and they've held up (PV about 525). I'd like to try the Ruby BHTs next, but I doubt I'll go back to =C= since my last quad faded so damn quickly.

Dave - do you find the ARS relabeled Tesla's better than JJ's? Seems like a little better QC than the bulk JJ's. If I am not mistaken you shipped my Naked with ARS power and pre's and they help up great. Even buying from ARS, they are a damn sight cheaper than the SED's now.

Steve

Yeah the problem is if it is really large company and they buy a huge qty of tubes if the batch they bought has problems they could be shipping those bad batch tubes for years. ARS is small and they buy direct from JJ in smaller batches. Not saying I have not run into bad batch here and there but they consistently seem to be better. I use the JJel34 tubes. We will do a little recorded tube shootout for you guys and you tell me what you hear. Do not buy tubes from Ce dist. or tubesandmore .com [ antique radio supply]. Consistently I get nothing but crap.

I still don't know what the big hype about Winged C's are.

I had them in my Splawn Quickrod, and didn't like them compared to the Mullards I was using. Same with when I had em in a Marshall TSL, but then again, different tubes react with different amps I guess.... but for that price, not worth it IMO.

actually,it isnt the plate voltage thats killing the tubes its the screen voltage if mark can design the amp to run a lower screen voltage around the tube specs(475)then any tube would live a longer life, and that should actually improve the sound of the amp

I don't know why everyone dislikes the JJ's in the CCV, I thought the E34L's sounded killer in it. They may not have quite as much midrange growl as Winged =C=, but the CCV has so much of that going on already, it didn't really lose anything IMO. What I really liked about them over the =C= was the added tightness and punch they gave the lowend. They lasted a good year in the CCV I owned, even with the crazy high plate voltage. Normally, I prefer Winged =C= in just about every EL34 amp, but the CCV sounded great with JJE34L's IMO.

Agreed, We take the JJEL34 ARS matched burned in sets and do a reburn and rematch when necessary. The JJ's give us the least amount of returns and problems. The Winged C have been pretty poor in reliability every time I try them, usually not making it through our 24 hour burn in, as well as the Mullards. As far as lowering the screen voltage yes of course this helps but it also lowers power.

how much power do you need?i'd rather not have to buy expensive tubes and after jj's have blown up a few amps here i'm not buying them anymore period,i think i could just live with a little less power ,but thats just me

There's not a lot of choice for 34's that will stay together with the plate voltages that amp puts out. JJE34L, SED's, Ruby BHT's.

Steve
What is the plate voltage rating on the CCV?

how does the BHT sound compared to the others?

I like the winged C, the chinese EL34B-STR and also the JJ EL34L
they all sounded equally good in the amps I tried them, but with different characters

the winged C definitely has its own thing, and sounds deeper, louder and more in your face than the others
the EL34B-STR sounds less punchy, but it's smoother and more fuzzy, which can be a good thing for some dry voiced amps
the EL34L is not as in your face as the winged C, but it's quite punchy and smoother than the SED

different amps and bias settings might give different results, though

I find the JJ's tend to put a blanket on some amps or more like a resistance to whatever tone you are expecting. Some amps can EQ themselves around them, and for most any amp you like to run scooped, they do fine. I used to run them in an Uberschall and they sound great in most Mesa's. So, I am not at all against them, just don't like them in some amps. Can't imagine them bringing out the best in a CCV.

That's just my 2 cents as a previous CCV owner. As John Suhr said, you got to get them from a good shop though that will have taken the time to burn through a batch and pick out the good ones.

Steve

Not a good idea with JJ's. You will definitely have more warranty work over some other brands.
