I am not the biggest fan of the SL2X. I find the SL2 stock cuts through just fine and is creamier than the SL2X....plus thicker. It is more of my perfect Marshall sound. A big thing with me is, does it cut the band mix while still sounding thick and creamy? Yes it does. I put mine back to stock with the exception of the bass mod.....I kept the bass tight mod but might even put that back. I never found it that loose.

Now, the EG3/4 sits much better in the band mix with the X mod than before. Really cuts now and sounds thick and full and can still be creamy. Mine is the standard EG3/4X mod but with a 250pf tube board cap as opposed to the 250pf.

that's exactly what my experience is with the sl2. for your guys music the sl2 is the way to go with a little bit tighter bass.

i like the sl2x for a little heavier music. check my link and the top clip is one that the sl2x works better for me than the stock sl2

Yep, that first clip you list is metal. I listen to a lot of metal but with the music I write for my current band, it is more like 90s hard rock, gothic with a classic rock influence and some, some 80s metal and new wave....with a sprinkle of the '00s! Anything from Rush to Lynch to Alice in Chains to Tool to APC, etc........not necessarily like true metal. Alice in Chains would be a good description which is more sludgy to me.

Funny though, because the EG3/4X works great for me. Sounds like a big Bogner or Diezel....but not as pure Marshally as the SL2. If I am doing more Van Halen, Rush or Led Zeppelin, I am breaking out the SL2.

Man, I need the SL!

Richie, you don't have an SL??!!

Dude, man that would be right up your alley bro. You at least gotta try one. I think you'll dig it.

No, I borrowed one and used a modded Randall one but do not currently own one. :D
I know it sounds huge. :) All the Plexi modules, Egnater and Randall both sound huge. Then again, my Randall was modded.

We are looking to buy a new house so it might be some time till I can own one.

I would probably have to seel one of my other modules.

Are you going to do some lead clips as well? :D

I find the SL2X tighter and brighter overall....but having half the mod on the SL2....just the bass mod is good....just does not have the upper mids as much. To me the X is a touch more harsh and not as smooth or as thick as stock.

What is bass mod on SL2?

Tightens the low end.

Fuzzy, did you have the volume higher for the SL2X clips? I am guessing that might just be the upper mids cutting through.

I like the sl2 better, sounded a little spongier, but I'm in my 40's, so maybe I've mellowed

I felt the same way till I played them back to back for an hour today. The SL2 just lacked the life of the EG3/4X and sounded dull by comparison. So, I modded the SL2 back to the SL2X and it came to life again. Now, I have to decide if worth to keep both. SL2X sounds more Marshally obviously due to the upper mids......where the EG3/4 is huge in the low mids.......sounds more modern.

i just got the eg34x

need to play with it some more.

then i will get some new comparison clips up

Awesome looking forward to it and your review of how it compares to the slx

I am finding I can get the SL2X and EG3/4X sounding almost identical. To my ears, some of the Eggie modules sound alike. Maybe some serious tube swaps are in order.

So you don't think tube swaps are in order, Jason?
I changed my wording. ;)

I just didn't find them sounding that close.I would put the EG3/4x right in the middle of the EG5 and SL2x tone wise.

I'm sure a lot depends on your individual rig as to how similar these modules sound. To my ears, the SL2X sounds like the bastard child of an SL2 and EG5. Fwiw, The EG3/4x is how I always wanted the SL2 to sound.
Considering these modules are all based on the same circuit, you can get them "close" to each other tone-wise, but the feel is different--and this is what sets them apart for me. I've had or have the EG3/4, EG3/4x, SL2 and SL2x. They are all different. Not night and day but they all have their own thing going on.

I am waiting for the clips but I really think the 3/4X is what I want .I dig the mid bite of the SLX but like a bit more low end and thickness .I am thinking if EG3/4 X sits in the middle of the SLX & Eg5 it may be perfect

You could always just do the SL2. That has more than enough low end and thickness. For that matter I find the SL2X has more than enough lows as well. That's why we have bass players. :D The EG3/4X to me is more modern, Diezel meets Bogner where the SL2X(although close) is more true Marshall...so I wouldn't think incredible thickness or lows like I'd expect from the EG3/4X. Nice to have both.

Jason, to be fair, my comparion was at low volumes so I need to try these next week at practice.
