I think you're right, the MIC may have a veneer...actually just checked and you are right about the veneer. I didn't notice a difference in the finish or feel of the MIA neck though. If you've 'played many' I take your word for it, but my point really is just that i'm very happy with the MIC and didn't notice a difference in the time I had with the MIA aside from the archtop. Anyone saying they are POS's based solely on the fact they are MIC should check them out. I can see some people just wanting to say 'my guitar is better than your guitar' too though.

EDIT - I may not be clear on the difference between a 'cap' and a 'veneer'. when I think veneer I'm thinking of a piece of plastic made to look like wood. I can take a pic of mine later tonight and post it. Its definitely not like a piece of plastic made to look like birdie, its an overlay over the maple neck a little over a 1/4 inch thick. I should google the difference i guess.

I can't upload the pics - says 'Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached' but before springing for the MIC i made sure the specs were the same - ample neck with birdseye maple overlay, hand-rubbed oil (no finish at all on the neck, which I love). After googling around about this subject there seems to be ALOT of confusion around the MIJ, MIC, etc... There was even confusion over being MIC peavey, fender, etc... Mine is an MIC Fender EVH special. I am starting to suspect there are large differences in the MIJ and MIC. The selling point of the MIC was 'same exact hardware and materials' except for the binding and arch top.

If I'm doing something wrong with uploading the pics, please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric

I got a MIJ one and the neck was tweaked. I couldn't see it when I bought it, but just could never get it to intonate correctly. My tech told me it was no good and, by luck, a guy who worked at Fender/EVH was also a customer of his, told me to tell him he said the neck was bad and he'd warranty it. Sure enough, they did. The neck they gave me was a NOS, sitting in an office in Ontario, CA that had come from the factory in Japan that closed down after the tsunami. New neck is totally awesome.

I think we are talking about two different things, the body has a veneer on the MIJ and I believe the MIC ones.. the fret board on the MIJ has a finish on it, kinda like a satin, I actually like it a lot because its so smooth and easy to clean... Dont get me wrong they are both very nice guitars

Do the new ones have SS frets?

I haven't seen the SS vintage frets on any of the newer ones except the USA standard. I've had mine for a few years, so mine isn't new - I think its a 2012 or 2013 MIC model which does have the SS frets and unfinished "hand-oiled" neck. Ive checked online at zounds and MF just to see what they are going for now and none are like mine that I've been able to find and none are MIC. Mine has the SS vintage frets, (I hate jumbo frets but put up with the on my schecter 7 string) no finish on the nick or fretboard, and not a veneer on the neck which is what I thought you meant, but a birdseye (what the specs on both the USA and MIC called) fretboard overlay. Its a little over 1/4" thick. My fretboard has no finish on it except the same hand-oiled feeling as the rest of the neck. I wish I could upload the pics cause I think I really got lucky on the birdseye in the wood.

I honestly would not buy one of the new ones - not that they are bad guitars because Ive never played one, just that they do not contain the same hardware as the original. I also don't like the new USA stealth because the beautiful fretboard design isn't there (or at least not noticeable). A far as the body, yes, i see what you mean now - thought you meant the neck for some reason. Yeah, I'm aware the arch top on the MIA is like maple or something and the flat-top MIC has some kinda veneer on the flattop. I really do prefer the flat-top though, just because I was always a fan-boy of the EBMM. If it wasn't like $3k I wouldn't mind having one of the natural USA's as long as the BE neck was still the same but I can't see paying that for one when I have a model I totally love. Out of the box, it was crap and unplayable, but a professional setup made it my dream guitar no matter where it was made.
