New to me: '79 JMP Cameron Aldrich

Don't think I've ever seen a Cam come up for sale within 500 miles of me til this past weekend. Dude was cool as hell and is a wealth of info when it comes to amps. Really nice smooth deal.

Have only had one other Cam in the past. Never fell in love with it. This is much more my speed. Not sure that I've ever had anything better for high gain marshall tones.

Not a whole lot of options on this and honestly doesn't need them. Basically two gains, and a depth knob on the back. No loop. Nice and simple. Not going to do great classic rock tones. I've found it best to just dial it in for a killer high gain tone and roll back the volume for anything more classic.

Probably dialed in too much gain this morning but was a good time so...

I’ve had a few Cam Aldrich Marshalls; they all have a unique growl. The best being a white Headshell 79 JMP.

I have as just telling SquareBrain the other day,
Nothing can touch Cameron’s mids. NOPE.

About 10 years ago, I had a CCV and would crank it and jam all the time with my windows open.
I had a lawn service and mowed lawns on my street.
One of my clients was a guitar player,
he played heavy shit of some sort.
Well this dude owed me for two months of lawn service and was avoiding me like a Bugera.
One night I dropped that low E to D and started playing a ripping super heavy rendition of Soundgarden’s “Outshined”.
When I took a break to take the dogs out, I saw I had a missed call/voicemail.
It was that f’n client who owed for the two months
lawn mowing calling to fervently tell me that’s meanest and gnarliest amp he’s ever heard,
At THAT moment.. he heard the dopamine laced Cameron midrange as well and wanted… MORE.,
but he didn’t mention paying me. for the payments that were clearly in arrears…..
I was like what in the f**k..?,
Cameron’s got him hooked too!!!
Ah maaan’.

From my memory of Tone Talk, his main amp has always has been the Suhr Modded Marshall. To the point that Suhr guys get annoyed that the Cameron is mentioned. Had taken the Cameron out on the road years ago and didn't get along with it as a road amp. Still see's use in the studio. Hasn't spoken with Cameron in years.

I'm paraphrasing so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. That episode of Tone Talk wasn't long and I keep meaning to go back and watch as I was working and listening at the same time first time around. Honestly "to me" Doug always seems a little scattered when talking gear.

The modded amps game is such a crap shoot, esp with Cams I understand. I just got lucky, bought it without hearing it, no clips or anything.

This happens a lot with gear that’s not easily attainable. It’s easy to fool yourself into thinking it has to sound good…only to flip it not long after. I‘ve had quite a few Cameron’s over the years but never kept a single one very long.
