must be wolf hoffmans amp that is crazy 200 watt looks like a 12ax7 by the transformer 2 I would love to hear that, accept was one of my fave's back in the day

Spent some more time with it today....I put the original Sovtek 5881's back in and tried a couple of Chinese 12ax7's....I'm starting to come around. The effects loops is wacky on it though...I'm used to being able to boost the overall volume of the amp with my Gforce in the loop...this amp does not work that way. I hooked up a wet/dry rig though and that sounds pretty good...I don't think I can gig with it that way though...I need to be able to boost volume for leads.

Any ideas on how to boost volume for leads?

Oh and that Accept-ified 800 is a man's amp! There was a funny story in our local weekly entertainment publication about Accept this week...it's here, 'bout halfway down the page:

Put a good EQ in the loop (MXR) with the volume and gain turned up to your taste. Stomp on that bitch come solo time and enjoy the pwney goodness! That amp kicks ass for leads!

I always wanted an SLO...until i played one. I like how other people sound when playing them but i never liked playing on them. And also considering the cost of a new one IMHO they're extremely overpriced at what you get.

Anything you put in the SLO-loop to get more volume will only result in more gain. Put a volume pedal in the loop and all it does is control the gain with VERY little change in volume. Of course, you can get the loop modded. Set the SLO with the guitar volume flat out for leads and run the volume on the guitar for different tones. Oh yeah, if you are testing the amp with the GForce in the loop, take it out because the loop sucks

So if the loop sucks, than what do you do for a solo boost?

You give your soundman $20 before your set and hope he helps you out. Imagine that, a $3000 amp with a crappy loop and no solo boost.

I played late last night...the wet/dry rig is starting to sound reallly good...It's not that much gear either. Slave out of the Soldano into the Gforce into the return on a Crate Powerblock. The Mesa cabs I have can run in stereo...so there you go.

I agree, it's a lot of money for a crappy loop and no boost.....but I'm starting to see the attraction of it. Unfortunately the band has next weekend off as well so I won't be able to hear it in the mix for a couple more weeks....boooo...

The loop is what ultimately steered me away from the SLO. I played a 212 combo dry and fell in love with it. Problem is, I never play dry so all the bad press on the loop and how badly it gets along with pedals got me thinking.

I actually had one on order from MF, and cancelled it in order to score a Decatone w/412 cab on Ebay for $400 less.

Matthias Jabs (Scorpions), Van Halen, Eric Clapton and Warren Demartini have all gotten great tones from the SLO. I hate the amp and it has the WORST loop,,, HORRIBLE LOOP!

keith

SLO = Cold, Bright, Harsh, Stiff

But lots of guys have made them sound great. I don't get it, I can't make them sound great, but I can't deny what I've heard others do on record.

Yeah, but none of those guys have to carry their own amps...

I don't know why I found it funny that in order to get a decent wet sound, you have to run a $3000+ amp through a $100 power amp... Not bashing the Crate (in fact, I think I need to try to find one somewhere), its just on a different level than you would expect from Soldano.

is that the balls to the wall amp

I am not 100% sure but I think it is. I know Larry from Larry Amps knows the guy who built it back in the day and Larry helped me draw up a layout for a 50 watt Marshall that could get that sound based on his knowledge of that amp. That 50 watter sounds great BTW :D But I sold it :(
