Nuno's tone on latest album .. DSL2000

I'm listening to clips of the vibroverb, how the hell was he getting Punchline tones out of that thing? Turbo overdrive or Rat with some gain goosing that thing?

I really dig how he rolls the presence and treble back as the volume goes up. Setting the tone stack for stage volume will necessarily look a lot different than dialing in a sonically ‘similar’ sound at bedroom levels.

Volume and as stated, a funky microphonic tube in the preamp. When the tube finally died, the tone went with it, according to Bob St John.

I bought a 2x10 Vibrolux Reverb (same circuit other than the speaker configuration, silvrface though, not blackface) that somebody had built a single 1x15 cab for, I installed a real 60's Jensen 15" Alnico speaker, had the amp blackfaced, had ALL the Diaz SRV mods done, had a midrange knob added, and CRANKED it with a Charvel...gets damn close without any gain boosting. Then there's the "turn the reverb into a gain stage mod" (unplug the tank at the chassis end, solder a resistor between two phone plugs (I forget the value) and plug it in between them) and when you step on the reverb footswitch, you get a gain boost of whatever is on the reverb knob. Sub in a 12AX7 instead of the 12AT7 and get some more. Sounds killer for that tone.

EDIT: I haven't tried it yet, but to me, I think a variac would help get this tone at more manageable volume. That and putting 6V6 output tubes in it.

For more mods for Fender amps, google Fender guru and click on any of the amps listed, the mods are pretty universal. The resistor between the reverb jacks mod is in the Weber book, and I think it's also online from Jeff Bober's column in Premier Guitar magazine.

Ok, so that vibroverb was Def. Not stock then in addition to that wonky preamp tube. What did he tour with on the punchline tour?

Seems cleaner here, less beef and low mids.

No the amp was stock ! He toured with two Vibroverb reissues. No Marshall cabs.

I swear I remember him saying it was a Vibroverb and a Way Huge Red Llama on Punchline

There is def something light fuzzy going on.. I'd love to know what pedal is pushing the front end of the Fenders. Way Huge I could see. Pauly what ya got on that?

They sound good, sure.
But they’re also cheap and easy to replace, which is another good thing about them.

Most pros who use them have a nice collection of amps at home, that they’d never consider taking out on the road. For good reason.
Ya but he recorded his album with a DSL, shouldn't he have used one of those special amps he has in his amp collection for that? That's the thing, most famous musicians don't give a shit about gear. They'll use whatever works and get great results doing so.

True. Seems like they go in, try some tones and commit. The rest of us scrutinize every damn little detail. Never get much done.

Never heard that one but wouldn’t surprise me, I have a clone I’ll have to try it. I always assumed the fuzzy-ness was the funky tube going away and the amp being run on the ragged edge of volume ! Lol

Just ran across this. Never was a huge Extreme fan, songs are dumb, imo. Plus, More Than Words, if I had a dime for every time a girl asked me to play that....

Anyway, dude kicks ass:

That was some years back, but looks like could still be a Rat into the DSL.

He never could get away from the ProCo RAT pedal.

:ROFLMAO:

I recently started using one as a boost (low drive, high level, filter where it sounds best) and I can totally understand how he never left it. The pedal is actually pretty amazing as a boost. It doesn't completely lop off the low end, but it still tightens it up really, and it also doesn't seem to only boost just the mids like some other popular tubescreamer type boosts. It boosts plenty of extended highs as well, so you get this really clinky, slightly compressed kind of character when you do quick hammer ons and pull offs with your left hand and it's great. I can see how he developed his percussive style with this pedal.

I usually go for EQ pedals as clean boosts but I think the RAT has become by favorite "characterful" boost.

Try running it with an EP-Pre pedal right after it.

I used to think a RAT was just a crappy fuzz pedal and it can be...but if you set it up like Nuno into a Marshall....well....

Regardless of amp the one constant with Nuno was and is his 1984/85 Rat pedal. You like Nuno tone... you'll love the Rat in what it imparts to the tone.... that grind almost fuzz enveloping the single notes with some nice harmonic ring to it. Once I saw the Nuno setting for it, I was like OHHHHHH.....

So a FET boost hit the amp even harder? Hah, sounds like it would be aggressive.
Yeah, I built an EP3-Pre pedal, and it does have a boost mode on a switch.

It has a second JFET stage that was not in the original circuit, that lowers the output impedance without changing the tone.

I've tried it before and after a ProCo Rat pedal, and seem to prefer it after.
