Regardless of amp the one constant with Nuno was and is his 1984/85 Rat pedal.

Well, those are only $500-800 after a quick Reverb seach... so about as much as the DSL2000 he's playing through. LOL.

Any great clones of a RAT from that era?

You can find clones on Reverb, how close they are I don't know. It's not a complicated circuit and alot of the voodoo has been attributed to that LM308 OPAMP chip.

Many people say the new ones aren't much different than the 1985 Whiteface Reissues but I bought a new 85 Whiteface reissue back in 2013 so I have not compared it to the new ones. Mine has a vintage NOS LM308 OPAMP chip in it and built in the USA at the Kalamazoo location.

When I want Nuno tone that's the pedal to do it, even if I'm not using an L500XL pickup any high output in the 13-14K range can get you fairly close IMHO but as talked about the Bill and Becky L500XL is more spot on, I just don't completely love that pickup as much as my vintage Duncans which have more lowend and just a tad warmer.

Yep.

That's a real thin sounding pickup, and it doesn't clean-up worth a damn when you roll back the volume knob.

Jhs did a comparison video of the vintage rats with the new one with the different chip and they sounded identical, I think it’s in here somewhere

Just found this without hesitation snagged it ultra quickstyle.

WFTP was primarily the brown 63 reissue Vibroverb cranked through a 4x12. If I recall several interviews correctly, the cab had greenbacks. I tried this same thing back in the day when I worked at GC and it does THAT tone. Just gotta keep the bass knob low. Microphonic tube not required. It was glorious.

It wasn’t a reissue. His tech found the amp at a yard sale or something, he told me himself. It was an old og vibroverb. And Bob St John told the story on Gearsluts about the microphonic tube. They were there. The tech plays guitar too, and he’s awesome at it. He knows his shit.
