the diffrance is more than minimal...

Caps are diffrent, routing is diffrent(ie look at the white caramic resitor on the old one, its not there on the new one.

Are we sure this old one is stock?

Brae

that resistor is a cap, not sure if that is a mod or not.. but it looks like it is hooked up into the loop circuit. however, it looks like both the amps pictured have the loop mods done to them.

Yes sir you are correct,

looked like those blocky 5w resistors(shitty monitor downstairs)

the masivve eleyctrolite caps are diffrent...

anyway
similar layout..

Soldano doesn't design an amp that is the benchmark for high gain back in the mid '80's and then change the design if it doesn't sound right or even better.

I wonder how that saying came about? Since 9 million people were touring and recording with JCM800's, i think Marshall deserved that title, especially when amps like the SLO are trying to sound like a good Marshall. IMHO

Some of those Marshalls were modded by guys like Soldano...

Look for all the Soldano's behind these guys!! ;)

Ahhh Gary Moore's Soldano and LP tones are incredible, way better than any Marshall tone I've heard from him IMHO.

EVH best live tone ever!! Best live solo (playing wise as well) I'd say as well; when the sound of the video finally settles

Then there's Clapton and Knopfler' Soldano tone...more vids if you want.

Benchmark baby!!

They came out in 87, the 174th one was made in '89 (Unless they start at 0 every year) not much chance they were the "Benchmark" of the mid 80's Not to mention the millions of JCM 800's and Mk series Mesa's out WAY before the SLO. May be a great amp to many people, but a "Benchmark" it isn't. It's just another modded Marshall with the wrong tubes in it.

Here's the 89........... some of the differences are definitely noticable and some such as the routing on the PCB have to be looked for carefully

This amp is modified, not original IMO.
My guess (will have a sharper look later) is that the loop levels were adjusted to reasonable niveau.

You are right. The loop has been modified but I had my 93 and my 87 open side by side and have seen the other subtle differences in the PCB inperson. The difference was there.

Soldano serial #'s have run sequentially since day one right up to now. They don't "start at 0 " every year.

Actually,  more of a modded Bassman with the correct tubes. I'm pretty sure there were a few modded Marshalls in the mid '80's and some with Soldano's work in them.

I'm a bit of a Soldano fan boy btw, so take my thoughts for what tehy are

Benchmark baby!!

I've always had a love/hate relationship with SLO's. They are cool amps, no doubt about it, but I've just had mixed experiences with them. I would like to sit down with one and really mess with it for a few hours, develop a final opinoin.

Wow, Eddie is ON!

Great thread btw. I love SLO's. So do pre-90s SLO's go for more $$$ then?

The solo is great, but man that is some buzzy ass rhythm tone
It really is!

That's the "chewy Soldano sizzle" my man!  I believe Duesentrieb has mentioned some sort of mod to help the SLO's rhythm tone; although I dig it stock but you never know. Would be interesting to hear a clip of the mod :)

Interesting little known fact on EVH's SLO's. He owns 3 and used them quite alot. Ordered them/liked them all stock; never asked Mike to change a thing. Still uses them... well he doesn't like EL34's any more. :poke:

Its a mod for the crunch only. IMO the X88R has a superior crunch sound - and there is just a small difference between the SLO and X88R circuitry in the crunch channel. The SLO has an interstage 2M2/120pF while the X88R has a 680k in this position. So taking out the 120pF and adding a 1M to the 2M2 gives you approx. the X88R thing.

Sorry, no clip at the moment (altough I'm currently rebuilding my SLO-clone), but if you stumble over a X88R crunch thru a good poweramp you know what I mean.

The clean also likes a simple mod - stock the signal is put to ground with a 39k resistor, which makes it clean but a bit lifeless. Replacing the 39k with a 100k (thats located on the clean/crunch switch) adds loudness and meat to the clean, one need to set down the gain pot a bit though . . .

Just some ideas for those who like to play around with the circuitry . . .

Interesting !! Do those mods change the lead channel tone ?? Making the clean louder may aggravate the phasing issues with the lead if the stock switching's not modded, no ? Hey, if you pass by Paris, don't hesitate to stop by !! I'll lock you in my basement for a few hours with a soldering iron !! :D

9 out 10 videos you see of Gary Moore he's playing a Marshall.

And the benchmark Van Halen tone is the first 4 albums. His tone after that turned to crap IMHO

For every 1 video you find of a player that was big in the 80's that you happen to dig up a Soldano video of, i can find 20 videos of that same player using a Marshall. I'm a Boogie guy myself but most of my favorite 80's players were using Marshall. And the rest were using Boogies.

I don't like playing on a Soldano but i like hearing other people play them. But, i was really just curious how anyone can think Soldano deserves that tag as a benchmark of anything when the 80's were owned by Marshall, and the 90's benchmark was the Recto tone, regardless of what half the forum thinks.

Also when he used Soldano's.. he only used the clean channel with a Marshall Guvnor pedal in the front end, to get his main tone.

Boosted the crunch channel if I remember correctly. No one has ever boosted a Marshall...right?

Find me a better Marshall tone from Gary live, IMHO you won't be able to, but maybe.

Yeah but im pretty sure he had the gain set on the amp so that it gave him a barely broken up clean sound. Those Guvnor pedals have a bunch of gain on tap, so he was doing more than just boosting with the pedal... He was getting a ton of gain from it!

But regardless, i do love his tone with the Guvnor/Soldano combination! No doubt about it :)
