But, i was really just curious how anyone can think Soldano deserves that tag as a benchmark of anything when the 80's were owned by Marshall, and the 90's benchmark was the Recto tone, regardless of what half the forum thinks.

I could see modded Marshalls or ADA as the 80's tone. For the 90's, while the recto provided a bookend tone, I think you could also argue that the 900s and 5150s had their contributions.

9 out 10 videos you see of Gary Moore he's playing a Marshall.

And the benchmark Van Halen tone is the first 4 albums. His tone after that turned to crap IMHO

For every 1 video you find of a player that was big in the 80's that you happen to dig up a Soldano video of, i can find 20 videos of that same player using a Marshall. I'm a Boogie guy myself but most of my favorite 80's players were using Marshall. And the rest were using Boogies.

I don't like playing on a Soldano but i like hearing other people play them. But, i was really just curious how anyone can think Soldano deserves that tag as a benchmark of anything when the 80's were owned by Marshall, and the 90's benchmark was the Recto tone, regardless of what half the forum thinks.

I hear ya man! :)

Just find me a better sounding clip of Gary when using a Marshall is all I'm saying. :boxer:

Is Gary endorsed by Marshall now? Not sure. I know that Soldano has never endorsed anyone. If you play a Soldano it's because you bought it. That would have something to do with your idea of Marshall owning the '80's and '90's was Mesa thoughts. They bought most of it i guess :poke: Just sayin' and messin'.

Boosted the crunch channel if I remember correctly. No one has ever boosted a Marshall...right?

Find me a better Marshall tone from Gary live, IMHO you won't be able to, but maybe.

Yeah but im pretty sure he had the gain set on the amp so that it gave him a barely broken up clean sound. Those Guvnor pedals have a bunch of gain on tap, so he was doing more than just boosting with the pedal... He was getting a ton of gain from it!

But regardless, i do love his tone with the Guvnor/Soldano combination! No doubt about it :)

One of the best sounds I ever had was running a Soldano GTO pedal infront of a Marshall DSL 50 watt head into the clean or crunch channel that was set up with sort of a SRV "type of clean" sound. Hit the GTO pedal and Blammo!! Killer tone!! Boy was that fun!!

Sorry man, no clips from me. Not set up for that type of stuff.

I bet that sounded great! I'v never tried the GTO pedal but heard its pretty cool

Interesting !! Do those mods change the lead channel tone ?? Making the clean louder may aggravate the phasing issues with the lead if the stock switching's not modded, no ? Hey, if you pass by Paris, don't hesitate to stop by !! I'll lock you in my basement for a few hours with a soldering iron !! :D
Salut Francois,

it doesn't affect the lead of course. The bleeding can be fixed by adding another VTL (these black "bugs" - now you have four, with five the design error is fixed).
I'll give you a call then when I'm in Paris. Actually I'm driving close to it three times per year . . . ;)

Also when he used Soldano's.. he only used the clean channel with a Marshall Guvnor pedal in the front end, to get his main tone.

Both those comments are misinformed even if he said it. His tone with a Soldano was typical 59LP into the SLO lead channel. I used that combo for years and know it all too well!

He also used a HotRods a lot. And combinations of HRs and Bluesbreakers.

I was just thinking of popularity, that's all. The main thing for me is, i could buy a JCM800, mod the hell out of it, get a nice OD pedal, and a great sounding 4x12, and and have money left over and i still wouldn't have spent as much as a new SLO.

And i was just wondering where the benchmark label came from? Funny thing, back in 1994 when Guitar World did a shootout of 20 heads, they used the word sizzle to describle the Soldano Hot Rod. And it seems like people always throw the word sizzle around when talking about Soldanos.

And no matter what Gary Moore uses, he usually winds up sounding like himself.

Gary Moore is great but I can't stand how he leaves his pinky finger out like a dead linb. Thast aside Marshall is currently building him a Sig model.

SLO's back in those days were $2K and a Soldano Hot Rod is NOT a SLO. Just sayin.......
PS: Yes Gary Moore sounds like Gary Moore plugged into anything but I'll recognize the SLO the minute he plugs into it.

All I know I just got an SLO 100 and wish I had bought one back in the '80s - would have saved me a ton of money and frustration on, and with, amps. (still in the honeymoon phase, but I tried and have owned a lot of amps) Always funny to me when people talk about Marshalls, is there any Marshall out there that isn't modded to hell to get it to sound good? Don't want to bash on Marshall, and it's cool that it can be tweaked to get what you need - but most people tweak them.

The SLO has one of the best lead tone out there. But the tone is unique, very glassy. Won't be for everyone but it's cool. The only thing with those is they are friggin loud. I had one and sold it to a friend years ago. I sometimes wish I would have kept it but I could say that about 5 or 6 other amps I've owned.

Now guys let's get some clips/vids up.
