It is like that with a lot of his mods like the Erect - which is why I like that one. But the desire is there to have a more real Recto...so I understand form that standpoint for sure.
If I only had SL2, I might want IT and the SL2X, but since I have the EG3/4, it might make sense to look at the SL2X.
Sorry, I am playing devil's advocate.
That's exactly the point rich...Most of us like Marshalls that have more growl, bite in the upper mids. That's what makes Marshall well..a Marshall. I'm a Marshall guy...and never quite fell in love w/ the stock SL2 because of all of those reasons. The SL2X doesn't have "cut your head off high end" or too much mids at all. It has the right amount of upper mids...which the changes really give it a lot more clarity and presence to it. I personally think the SL2X is MUCH more pleasing to the ear, and fits better in a mix vs the SL2.
If you want smoother...go the EG3/4...and keep it stock. That's the dark / smooth Marshall tone you'd want. If you want more of a true Marshall tone...then the SL2X is key.
Play devil's advocate all you want...but there's a reason why so many of us are modding the SL2 to the SL2X specs...it's just THAT good!!! Just go get it done...and quit the speculation!!!!
Eric
Agree 1000% Eric. The SL2X is THE Marshall tone I was looking for in this Egnater lineup. I always had a love/hate relationship with the SL2. It never stayed in a slot for very long. The SL2X on the other hand hasn't moved out of the M4 since I got it, and it won't be.
Rich, Think of this tone in your head.....EG3/4 running parallel with the EG5 and mixed into one cabinet. That is what the SL2X sounds like to me. It has all the necessary Marshall frequencies and bite, but not in any way harsh or overly bright. Can be smoothed out to via the EQ on the module or in your face aggressive. In my opinion, it's the perfect compliment to the EG3/4 for covering all the Marshall vibes I want.
I really like the way it feels different depending on which side of the RT2/50 I run it through. On the EL34 side, a nice sag in the mids and round top end. On 5881 side--tight, aggressive and in your face. I probably couldn't be happier with this set up.
Just do it Rich. You won't regret it.
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it.....
